To avoid supplementing light in the winter but still have eggs available, I take some of the ABUNDANCE when they are laying and water glass them

Or you can freeze dry them. 72 eggs fill up the 4 trays. Put them in the freezer first so you don't make a mess everywhere.

To help identify your chicken age you can place a band on the chicken’s leg when you get them. Weather you put bands on the older chickens is up to you. Use a color for the year. They can even be numbered if you want to go that far.

My hens stayed in the coop and run during the negative degree weather. Today is warmer in the 30s. Thay are our free-rangeing as usual after 10 days of the freezing weather. This was a first for my chickens. They only layers two or three eggs a day. Before the freeze we had a dozen or more. I'm so happy they are out and about again. 😊 Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas on chickens

I really enjoyed this episode, Lisa! I got chickens almost a month ago and I love them! I could watch them for hours! Anyway, I ferment my chicken feed too and one thing I love to do is to cook up potato peelings in whey or sour milk. Always potato peelings on hand. Thank you for your podcast... It is something I really look forward to each week!

It has also been my experience that young chickens lay through their first winter. But in their second winter these same chickens would not lay.

I have 3 stores and I am trying to find some equipment that produces really good sound quality for videos. Is there anything that you would recommend? I also have a KZitem channel that I am trying to get going for our stores as well. If you have an info, I would be so grateful for it! Thank you! xoxoxo Lots of love from Oregon.🥰

Thank you for the info. Just getting started with chickens myself. Would love to hear about Mom’s who suffered from PPD and how they got over it. I’d say I’m on the other side of it now, but I would love more kids but because of past ppd I’m afraid to try again.

This may sound gross, but dehydrating, encapsulating, and eating your placenta after the baby is born is hugely helpful. It was for me. It helped me regain all the nutrients lost during pregnancy. Regardless, you want to focus on nutrient dense foods throughout the entire pregnancy and after birth. The 2 most nutrient dense foods on the planet are pastured egg yolks and beef liver. I would also add in Wheatgrass juice, either fresh or the organic powder. It is incredibly digestible, and the wheat sprouts are very good at sucking up nutrients from the soil. I experienced PPD myself, and it was rough. I felt like I was suffocating. Hugs! 🫂

I grew up in Australia and they stopped laying on the shorter days there too. Maybe hens are just designed to take a break each year. I am in Canada now but have not had hens long enough to compare.

I was taught by a chicken lady that the chickens are born with the exact amount of eggs they’re going to lay in their lifespan. So if I put a light in the coop, yes they will still lay, but what it’s gonna do is shorten the lifespan of how long they’re going to lay. Can you confirm if this is true?
@maren807

I believe this is true. Human females are also born with all the eggs they will ovulate in their life. 😊

My flock, born in spring, started to lay by mid/late summer, their eggs were small. They took a break for winter, and now they are laying regular size eggs. So it took a few months. Hope that helps.
