Sam, leaving everything you know to be with your husband is so romantic! So sad what he was put through in the U.S. with the visa situation. Sorry you guys had to go through that ordeal, I'm sure it has helped to make you closer. That's what trials usually do for us when we trust God with our future. My husband and I are close to 70 years old and we are planning to live in Aix en Provence or perhaps Toulon. Not sure yet because we have not visited yet. We need to find an expat community that is accepting of people in our cohort. Also, although we appreciate the history and the art of the cathedrals there, we are not Catholic. We are Baptist. Any ideas that might help us find our niche there? Thanks in advance! All the best to you and your husband for a happy future.

Thank you Margo! I love my life here in France and feel so blessed that I ended up in Aix-en-Provence. The whole move has definitely strengthened our relationship. There is a big expat community here in Aix, you may want to check out the Facebook group English speakers in Aix-En-Provence😊

About the vegan question... I'm not vegan but I do eat a lot of plant based foods and we (wife and I) do go to vegan restaurants when we can. Due to France's strong food traditions the take up of being vegan is still very low here. However, more French people do seem to eat vegan food now. As a rule of thumb, you'll find more vegan restaurants and options in big cities or popular tourists places and very little to nothing in rural towns and villages. You might get lucky at the grocery store... Paris is the best place to be a vegan if you like to go out to eat. Quite a large selection of places now for all budgets. The app Sam suggested is a good go to but it's not always up to date with the latest places.

When i visited Spain ( barcelona ) in 2002 for 3 months, the cultural shock to me was the eating late. I'm so used to having dinner at around 6-7pm but in spain everyone eats dinner like at 10pm. which was crazy to me. Also when going out to a bar or club on the weekends everyone arrived to the club like at 12-1 am in the morning and the clubs stayed opened till 7am. I wasn't used to that. Oh and everything being closed on Sunday really confused me. It was so hard to do anything but sightsee on sundays. LOL

Cool video Sam 1) Of course Paul missed the food when he was in the U.S but hey you guys were in Cali , not exactly the worst place for food variety to make up for the lack of legit French food :P 2)Hey you know one of the things I would do to also immerse yourself in French even more would be to look at the tv channel Gulli with subtitles on :) Yes sure most of those shows are kids shows and a lot of them are french made but that's the thing it's kids levels of French , so with the subtitles on it would help you take notes to learn some vocabulary. And then some other days look at the same show but with subtitles off, don't try to understand what your watching just take it all in , hell do some cooking while the shows are on giong and just listen to the story from afar. You may think I'm weird about this but for real that's what helped me with Japanese give yourself windows of immerision where you're NOT TRYING to understand you just let the language enter your ears and let your brain do whatever with it. You'd be amazed how quickly it unlocks everything in your head to have moments you're just not even trying to understand you just let it flow into you. It makes the moments where you do try becuase you scheduled them to be moments you try matters more to your brain , so basically your head is more cooperative . I know it sounds weird and counter intuitive as fuck but trust me I'm not the only one for whom it worked . Hell let me give you a video of that couple of two ladies (A canadian gal , and an American gal) that video is tips about how to get the French language to sink in and like I said the only thing I disagree with is that SOMETIMES do NOT TRY to understand just let the french sounds flow into you : kzitem.info/news/bejne/uqidzHWEo3p6rYo Also maybe give Emma and Hannah a follow they're vids are super sweet to watch.

Once everything re opens the closest you'll get is getting to Lyon then take the train to whatever city in the South East you wanna go to. For South West Pau is slowly getting to International travel level with its airport too but for now it's still very much a local airport.
