The Canon 400mm 5.6 is a great budget telephoto. I no longer shoot Canon and have moved to Sony. But, the 400 was the last Canon lens to go. I used it with an adapter on my Sony camera before replacing it with a Sony lens.

Yeah, I've got it with my Sony camera, and love it! But eventually it will end up getting replaced, in the farr farrr future though!

I replaced the Canon 400mm 5.6 with the Sony 70-400mm G II alpha mount lens with an e-mount adapter. It's not fast focusing, but I use it mainly for shooting wildlife. I've been happy with the quality of the images. But, I'll probably replace it with the Sony 100-400mm GM someday.

Good review of one of my favorite Canon lenses! One aspect not mentioned is that there is no Image Stabilization! But it’s a very sharp lens and with 2X extender and tripod, I have done some serious Moon photo shoots! Using Live view, and a clear sky I have been able to grab some terrific moon captures! For moon shots I like it better than the 100-400 MK. plus 2X ext. But I believe its main purpose is for Bird/animal photography! WT Fisk

300mm f4L IS is another option. Gotta crop slightly everytime though. 1.4x extender can be added too. =420mm f5.6L IS. Not that fast focusing nor that sharp though wode open.

Recently I bought a Tamron 18-400mn lens...it is cool..but requires lot of light. I use a canon 80d. Kindly share your views about the above lens. I am not a professional but photography is my passion.

It seems like a good lens! Especially if you're passionate about photography, it seems like it would be a good range for a travel type lens to capture almost anything. As much as I talk about sharpness in my videos, the sharpening tools on photoshop do a great job of correcting soft lenses! I hope you're getting some good shots with it!

What camera are you mainly using the lens on? and is the AF pretty good with the adapter to sony ? Great review by the way :)
@KazCanning

I use it on an a7r1. The AF on the sony camera isn't that great, but it worked really well when I had it attached to some canon rebel cameras. I actually used to use it for taking surfing photos here in San Diego and the auto focus worked incredibly well!

@@CJamesPhoto, I am currently interrested in the canon 400mm f/5.6. I am using the Sony A7R III and the A6400. I also already own the sigma MC-11 adapter. Did you use the lens on Sony and how did the AF perform? What adapter did you use?

Why would someone want this instead of one that goes 100-400. Isn't the one focal length kind of limiting?

Primes generally perform better in terms of optical quality and autofocus capabilities. So it's more a personal choice if you want the versatility or the sharpness. Both are great choices though!

When you are out shooting wildlife, fast flying ducks in particular, your 100-400mm lens will be maxed out to 400mm anyway! Most times, primes will out perform zooms ( Occam's Razor! ). I love my 400mm, and it works great with a 1.4x extender on the Canon 7D mark ii.

I prefer ... Canon EF 400 mm F4 DO IS USM .. because EF 400 mm F5.6L USM don't have Image Stabilizer ....
