The slight advantage Fields appears to have in athleticism, and it is very slight, have not translated to anything advantageous on the field. Fields is younger, but Russ isn’t old, and his experience is invaluable because he has played at the highest level. Fields’s taller, but it hasn’t translated to his reading defenses more effectively or unloading the ball more quickly. If Fields were Russ’s height, he’d be saying “paper or plastic!” Field is faster but not that much faster, and he takes more sacks than Russ does. The average QB rushes for about 180 yards per season over 17 games. Russ rushed for 341 yards in 15 gages last season, which measures out to 386 yards over a full schedule, and he did it with a coach who didn’t want him and was working AGAINST him. He had few designed runs, which tells you he can still improvise. Hence, Russ is still capable of rushing for 400-550 yards! Furthermore, if we remove the 3-4 outliers who rush for over 600 yards per season (e.g., LJ, Fields, and Hurts), that league-wide QB rushing average is even lower. The slight physical advantages Fields has are not nearly enough to compensate for the numerous important advantages Russ has over him, and Russ has a huge advantage in every department but height and speed. I’ll also point out that Russ’s worst season (2022) was better than Fields’s best season. If you don’t believe me, go look it up. So, you’re talking about aQB who, despite having perceived physical advantages, hasn’t learned how to read the field, takes more sacks than any QB in the league, is an inaccurate passer, and doesn’t really rush better than his veteran counterpart by that much. Yet, you want that QB to start over the more experienced veteran, who has led teams to two SBs, is the second-winningest QB over the past decade to Tom Grady, and still has incredible arm-talent and the best deep ball in the league. You also want him to start over that more experienced veteran despite the fact that the veteran naked in the top-10 in several meaningful stats last season. Again, Russ’s worst season ever was better than Fields’s best, and Fields has ranked in the top-10 in two major categories: rushing yards and sacks!

You mean rode a defense to the Super bowl. Don't forget, that defense lead the league for 4 years straight in points allowed. The last time a defense did that, there were only 13 teams in the league. All the way back in the 50's. Take away a number 1 defense, Russell only has 1 playoff win. That 1 win came when his D only gave up 9 points. Russell Wilson was as important to that team as Jim McMahon was to the 86 Bears.

You couldn’t send him to Denver. He and Sean Payton would not mesh well. Fields would make Payton want Russ again. The NYJ? Absolutely! That’s where he should e been in the first place, and no one would be arguing for fields to take over from Rodgers. The powers that be don’t want Russ to keep playing because he’ll keep breaking records and might win more SBs, which would take some shine off the legacies of Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. Also, Russ is the only QB for whom Andy Reid has. I answer, and the NFL is running a boxing model, where one team is king of the hill and is a main attraction, while others try to knock that team off. Russ is dangerous for the Chiefs. The league doesn’t want that.

He also had 4 of the top-5 least probable completions and led the Broncos to a #1 red zone performance rating for half the season. He achieved that with his own coach hating him! Injuries haven’t held Russ out of games very much, and they usually haven’t kept him from playing at a high level. He has missed 7 of 195 games in his career, and 5 of them were due to injury while 2 were coaches decision. Sean Payton sat him for the final two games for financial reasons last season. Russ is as durable as they come. He probably should’ve missed more games than he did in 2021 and 2022, but he played admirably in 2021, and in 2022 he played to his own detriment. I believe Russ was afraid to sit out in 2022 because it would’ve saved Nathaniel Hackett’s job, and he didn’t want to do that. He wanted the Broncos to lose those games and Hackett to get fired like he deserved.

Tomlin and Russ know Fields isn’t the dude, but they want to give him an opportunity so no one can say anything once Russ is ensconced as the starter. The media and fans won’t be able to say he didn’t have a chance. Fields will hang himself by not being able to pick up concepts quickly enough, being inaccurate, carrying the same bad habits he had in Chicago, and not being as efficient as Russ is. Even if he doesn’t, Russ will still start, but Tomlin wants to know what he has in Fields and Allen. I personally think Fields is trade-bait. All Fields has needed was the right coaches & some actual WR’s on his team, Russ is also too short to see the middle of the field, he never throws down the middle, he can only throw go balls & he hasn’t been the same since he hasn’t been with Tyler Lockett, I see you like Russ but him not being able to throw down the middle do the field means he won’t be throwing to our TE much which we need to utilize in the AFC North, down the middle of the field, then we are a run heavy team, Fields fits Pittsburgh better than Russ ever will.
