My wife and I watched Paul Nicholas in the London production at the Palace Theatre in December 1972 as our 3rd Wedding Anniversary treat. What a show and your man was superb.

@lomion79 He's giving it a bit of a middle eastern Hebrew dialect which is unique given that no one else had done it before. I've heard Paul NIcholas sing many a song here he's playing a character and it shows. Kudos to him though. As I said, I'm a Paul Nicholas fan.

And to add, we went up to Palace theatre just after matinee as my father had to see a cast member, so taken in to the pub by back stage door -all supping drinks and bloke says to Derek James -castella ads if anyone can remember-and wife was Di Langton, and had played JC in the matinee…’Sorry mate , you’re Judas tonight. Cheers, saviour to c’&t in 5 hours. Was very privileged as Derek Griffiths was playing Simon -having played Judas matinee-and met him and all again backstage. He was an incredibly kind and gifted man. Had similar experiences with the original Evita, first recording and stage show. But JCS is always in my heart with the original casts.

Having read many comments here, and seen many JCS’ productions , I would say in my opinion this is probably the best. Ian Gillan-who I adore as an almighty voice from Deep Purple, Gillan and JCS was the amazing original in recording. Paul I saw 4 times at the Palace in 72 plus. Jesus, Judas, Simon and 2 of the council were my fathers clients and got to go back stage every time. Was totally star struck at tine. The v original recording with Gillan and Murray Head is the purest, but the first stage show with Paul and cast is outstanding. The ever increasing need to be ‘more gethsemane ‘ with tenors-Boe😡😡, is the same as Bring him home…Boe😡 Stop! The original is the best. I’ve also seen productions of JCS reinterpretations from amateur to professional companies in 6 towns UK, Ireland , NZ, Spain, Italy-walked out as JC is either a woman, Chinese , disabled , all three plus at one show wasn’t crucified but died of plastic poisoning.

PAUL BEAUSLINK DEAN NICHOLAS, came from a jewish background, his father Oscar was a manager for the stars of stage, musical, disc. I seem to remember Oscar his father trained as a solicitor. I knew Paul when he worked for David Screaming Lord Sutch. He started out as Paul Dean and the Dreamers a pop/rock group. He had a great friend in Ron Harwood, who wrote a big hit for Shaking Stevens. Ron was awarded an Ivor Novello award for You Drive Me Crazy no 2 in the hit list. colindaleradiosutch

Not as good as his reprisal of the role in 1992. Now, that 1992 cast with Paul as Jesus is my favorite version of the show. Has my favorite of every role. Not perfect, but by far my favorite.

As abysmal as this and the rest of the London cast were, the London show was the most successful version of JCS ever produced. It ran for 8 years, whereas it never made it to 2 years on Broadway.

Big fan of Paul Nicholas and interesting to hear the accent he puts in to the part. However, Neeley, Balsamo, & I regret to say Nicholas, are nowhere near as good as Ian Gillan singing this song.

Um... This is actually the worst version of Gethsemane I've heard. Goat-like vibrato and singing a pretty iffy high C instead of screaming the G above high C like all others in the role. No passion or suffering which is what you expect Jesus to go through in this number. Top versions go to Steve Balsamo, Drew Sarich, John Farnham, Eric Kunze, and of course Ted Neeley and Ian Gillan. Even Jeff Fenholt in the OBC far surpasses this. If by "dignity" people mean bored... Yes he sounds bored that he's about to be tortured and crucified.
