I look at it from an availability standpoint. I have an accurate, low recoil, common tumbling caliber.. The 5.56. The 7.62x39 is far more common, cheap, available and supported by local shops where as the 5.45 is almost nowhere to be found. If you have the means, sure 5.45 that shit up! But from a practicality standpoint the 5.56 and 7.62x39 are the way to go.

Great argument about both AK platforms. I hate videos that try to place one or the on the "better" pedestal, when in actuality neither is better... All quality firearms and ammo have their virtues and their drawbacks, but none are just plain better to an absolute degree. They all serve a specific purpose within their capabilities.

If we are buying new guns for the whole family, should we buy all the same caliber? Is it worth it to keep the variety of calibers in the house to a minimum? For example 9mm for handguns + one semi-rifle caliber + one long range rifle caliber + 12 gauge for shotgun? Also .22LR of course.

Hello Reid. I've been following you since you first "appeared" on KZitem a few years ago. I greatly appreciate your perspective, but even more so your demeanor and your reverence for history. I think the AK ammo situation must be a regional one. Here in Texas, I've been buying the Monarch ammo (Academy store brand, lacquer steel case, appears to be repackaged Barnaul) for between 7 and 10 bucks a box of 30 on the 5.45 and between 5 and 8 bucks a box of 20 on the 7.62, so roughly the same. Both are readily available here in most Academy stores in SE Texas, so there's no issue on availability, quality is good, and it's all noncorrosive. Are things different there in lower Appalachia?

I did start with the 7.62x39 but i did it in an AR platform lol you see i just got into shooting again after a 30yrs or more break when i got out of the service. But about 6or7yrs ago i ffelt after a few home invasions in my area we needed a gun for home protection.Well that was all it took after my 1st range trip i was hooked again and couldnt remember why i ever stopped.I never owned my own firearm as a kid/teen and always used my grandfathers shotguns for clays or .22LR for milk jugs out back of the gun club.Well since i have started back into the hobby i have decided want an AR15 in ever caliber they make one in.Then if im still young enough to keep shooting ill start on AR10s lolI do want an AK and gun prices were still kind of high when i `1st started. Now that i have maid it as far as building my own lower and cplete rilfes but most of the time i just build the lower and buy an upper.Im not into mix and matching i want dedicate lowers for each rifle! ALso have a spare set of lowers parts, and oops kit and a spare mil-spec lower.right now i have 5 ARs two in a 16" M4 configuration(my Fav) with different twists and then i moved on,.224Valkrie,the 7.62x39 and a .22LR but thats for the wife to try now that i finally after almost 20years got her out to the range for about 90mins.I have a .22 rovolver (8rds) and she loved it.After years of "i dont care about your guns" and " i dont even want to hear about what u want or need i dont care about your guns",Im really glad she was bored that day!LOLBrother she ,after only 1hr started squawking "I should get a gun for myself" HAHA of course i said go right ahead and ill help u thru the paperwork!LOLWell i have one last complete lower with a Geissele triggers, enhanced lower parts and Buffer kit as well as a really nice stock!Once i get this rifle finished, once i can nail down what caliber i want? I would like to step it up to a long range caliber with the energy and terminal velocity out to 800yrds+.Is there any caliber you can suggest that will fit this bill for an AR15 platform?I looked at 458Socom and 50Beo but neither are accurate out to the ranges im looking for?Would be grateful for any suggestions?Of course i will take a break from my AR platform and looking to get an AK.I just found out about the 545x39 just before watching your video here?So have to do some more research on this one? I would much rather have the flatter shooting round.

I've had a 47 for about a year and just picked up my 74 two days ago. I love the AK platform and wouldn't mind using either for social work if need be but I have to say that my 74 won me over in a huge way with just the first 90 rounds I put through it yesterday. I'm more accurate with it than I am with my 47 and the lighter recoil makes it virtually painless to shoot. I'll gladly put up with slightly higher ammo costs and scarcer/more expensive mags to rock a 74.

Funny I just happen to see this because I've been deciding on purchasing a new VEPR AK74-11 or VEPR AK47-11... I bought the SGL31 a few years back when it wasn't expensive and the 7N6 was readily available, as the Tula and Wolf... there were a lot of AK74s out there for sale, like WASR2s... now very few rifles snd scarce ammo. What happened ???? Do you think that round and rifle will ever make a come back ? If not then I'll get the 7.62x39. I bought the SGL because that's what the Russians use...

Really appreciate your videos Reid! Would you mind making a video about AK47 battle sight zeroing and ballistics (how much bullets drop at certain distances)? You had a video like this when you were at TR and I can't find it anymore. Thanks again

If you want an Ak74 and you are you're planning to actually shoot the gun, the answer is to get a .223 AK instead of a 5.45 that is a soviet round and pretty much nonextistent in America. 5.45 AK only for collection and keeping on your rack. 5.56 is the US military's standard caliber round so it will always be plenty, while the 5.45 you will need to import from Europe, unless some company starts producing it in America, but even then it will be more expensive and you will need to wait cause other people will want it to and supply will be short, and obviously demand will be high which means = high prices. There are European 5.56 AK's, like the German STG940, and there are others too, you can build yours with parts kits. Otherwise just get a 7.62 AK, the standard AK round and the one with more widely available parts and ammo

Reid, Please re do the "how to zero an AR/AK" video that you did while you were at Tac Response. Recently I was discussing a 50 yard zero with a friend and wanted to use that video as reference and I could not find it

"just take a shower with it, that's called bonding" love it lmao. I would also assume that the AK74 identifies as nonbinary?

Hey guys. Would it be worth getting an arsenal chambered in 5.56? Any known issues or problems?
