Great to see you back Jim. Spot on advice. I last shot in Dec 2018. When I stopped I was shooting at county & regional level. Then had a lay off for family reasons, and then came covid..... Back to the present time. Last month I got invited to a club open day. Grabbed my usual Spigarelli / Border 38#. Next day I couldn't move. Guess archery muscles don't get used much for other things. Now I'm back shooting but with 34# and just a couple of doz arrows per session. Fitness and form is slowly returning. Little and often is the way to go.

You have been sorely missed, Jim. Your advice right now is really timely. One thing I do that might complement your advice is that I keep an archery journal. I write about my archery adventures and misadventures, reflecting on what went right or wrong and why. It has helped me in times when I had put my bow away for a while and then returned to it after a spell. This may not work for everyone, but it helps me.

Took a break after over shooting and hurting my shoulder. Thought I was done. Traditional archery my passion. 6 months rest shooting my best ever. But only 20 to 25 arrows 3 days a week. Bought the rubber exercise bands they worked well building strength back. Glad your back Jim.

So glad to see you back! I can really relate to what you say in this video. 3years ago I had brain surgery and after a lifetime of shooting 3 years off did me in I actually thought something was wrong with my bow . I’m starting to get better and I am waiting on delivery of a lighter pound bow from striker. Enjoy your new job

So good to see you back, and a perfect vid for me. Right when the pandemmy hit I also came down with a nasty case of tennis elbow which has only got better now, after a year! Just picked up my 40 lb bow last week and it felt like trying to pull a semi truck with my teeth. Can’t wait to get back in shape and to see more of your vids. Welcome back!

Great to have you back, Jim. Luckily I’ve been able to keep shooting and making vids on a private outdoor 3D range. Just waiting now for the tourneys starting up again. That and really want to go to some gatherings. Cheers from Canada.👍😎🏹🇨🇦

Good to see you back. I've got a double hit to contend with now, lockdown plus I had major spinal surgery at the start of this year, I'm about ready to pick up a bow again, but no way am I going near my 50# for a long time.

Great advice Griz! Even being able to shoot between lockdowns, so many bad habits crept in and without access to the level of coaching or advice I required really made me doubt whether I still had archery in me. Recently I've changed to my old 28lb recurve freestyle bow, set a target a point blank range and worked on pulling back, not just to full draw but continuing to pull through in order to engage a natural non-conscious loose (something I can't practice and build the strength for without an active range or unadvisable dry firing). I chose to not shoot during the windy sessions of late to prevent malpractice during archery rehab. I have since returned to my 35lb Ragim Black Bear whilst using aluminium arrows, starting with a longbow-esk sight band, then removing the band to return to gap shooting. I've written off this season for any real achievements, but do intend to progress back to cedar arrows, gradual increase in distance (with 252s as encouragement) to redetermine aiming references and in turn regain the feel of "instinctive" subconscious gap shooting. I'm getting there, at my own unpressurised pace. Happy toxophily Jim!

Thanks for the vid. Great advice. Somehow lockdown has made me lose my passion for most things! But want to get back into archery. Been working indoors for over a year now and there’s nothing like being outdoors for physical and mental health benefits

I think this is a bit funny cuz i am a musician and had the same thoughts on where is my mojo and felt a bit of burnout from that and i used archery to take my mind of it until i had the urge to get back into music, but now the bow is also a part of me and thanks to you i got the regima black bear so thanks for everything

Great advice! Remember: Archery muscle groups aren’t used everyday! If you haven’t got an archery specific warm up routine with a theraband, go online and find one. Just bought some lighter limbs, 50 arrows max per session. Little and often works best until you’re back to full strength and fitness. 👍🏼

I don't understand why people stopped shooting their bows just because of the covidiocy. I love archery and with all this extra time from the covidiocy, what else to do than take the bow and shoot some arrows?

It very much depends on whereabouts you live. Here in the UK pretty much all our ranges and courses got shutdown during the hight of the pandemic. So unless you have private land, there was no place to go unfortunately.

@@MerlinArchery Scotland has no trespassing laws. I have no land, but I have been shooting both outdoors and indoors all the time. Just because government does what it always does, lies to us, there is no reason to believe them, nor to obey them.
