Jeff from Half-Life: Alyx is the newest edition to the terrifying unstoppable monster squad.
@StellaByLuna
4 жыл бұрын
my ranking: Fear - 4-5 The whole chapter with Jeff was (for me at least) intensely stressful. Jeff himself is decently imposing, as a larger, smellier, and faster headcrab zombie. He can't see and is very predictable, so if he hung around for any longer than he did, the fear would probably start to wear off. But the main fear factor of Jeff comes from the environment. There are glass bottles everywhere which are really helpful, but also can shatter, attracting Jeff to your position. Also the encounters with Jeff are mostly in very close quarters, needing you to sneak past him mere feet apart. (I never got killed by Jeff but If I did, I think I would fear him less) Edit: also the whole thing is in VR so that amplifies the fear a bunch Danger - 2-3 You don't loose that much progress when killed by him, and he is super easy to control; even when he is running right at you, you aren't necessarily going to die as you can just throw a bottle behind him and he'll turn the other way, however the game does force you to get very close to him at times, and the has several glass bottle booby traps set up in lockers and such which can be pretty dangerous. Persistence - 4 Jeff is only in one chapter of the game, so that definitely strikes him down a bit, but throughout that chapter, he is omnipresent and usually an imminent threat. Even (and especially) when you can't see or hear him, he feels like a threat to your life. There is almost no point in the whole chapter where you feel safe from him, and no points where you feel safe while not being able to see him.

*Super Paper Mario: True Form Mimi* Fear: 4. A surprisingly dark transformation scene to start off the chase sequence really sets off the tone for the encounter. The skittering of the spider legs, the weird aesthetic of her face, and the odd clockwork you see when you look at her from the side all help. Whenever she enters the same room you're in, the "Mimimimimimi..." and the intense music really works to let you know she's definitely there. Besides, what could be more terrifying than the threat of crippling debt? Danger: 2. Slowly crawling towards you and throwing "Rubees" isn't particularly dangerous to Mario's health. Super Paper Mario is an easy game in general, but at least the long maze section between the save point and the destination keep the threat moderately high, if you somehow manage to perish. Also, the boss fight is one of the harder ones, especially the later refights. Persistence: 3.5. She only chases you for about a quarter of one chapter, but she's very persistent the whole time, with no scripted chase sequences - just pure AI. Even after you escape the threat, the character of Mimi still remains for nearly the rest of the game, occasionally challenging you to battles. *A Hat in Time: Queen Vanessa* Fear: 5.5. If you've played or watched the game, you know what I mean by this rating. Danger: 1.5. If she catches you, she sends you back to the start of the floor. Not a terrible consequence, and it's pretty easy to just avoid her if you know what you're doing. Persistence: 2. Like Mimi, she only exists for a short portion of the story, and I'd say 80% of her actions are scripted.
@pyro2708
Жыл бұрын
The Dahaka was always my favorite, if he catches you is game over, you cannot fight him and the Prince himself shits his pants whenever he sees him... Until about halfway through the game when the Prince kind of gives up on life and just keeps on going because he doesn't have anything but to just go and try to finish what he already started, that scene where he goes "just try and catch me" it's a character-defining moment, also running from it all game just makes the final battle that much more memorable.

I feel compelled to mention that, as I applaud the inclusion of Sinistar, the first appearance of this trope in a videogame I can think of is in 1980's Berzerk. If you take too long clearing robots from each room before exiting to the next, a bouncing ball will appear and start bouncing towards your character while a low, menacing robot voice repeats "INTRUDER ALERT," a sound clip guaranteed to induce mild PTSD in anyone who has spent a quarter on this machine. Amping up the stress of these encounters, if you choose to shoot your lasers at this unstoppable murder ball, IT WILL START BOUNCING AT YOU FASTER AND FASTER. Your only recourse is to just run. Get out of there. To the next room, where you now have less time to clear the screen before the INTRUDER ALERT ball returns, moving slightly faster.

RE: revelations had me thinking Rachel would be the game’s “chases you through the levels to keep you from camping out” monster, but it makes sense that she only got a few appearances. Her jumpscare mechanic absolutely eats bullets, so keeping the player equipped while fending her off would’ve blown the balance way off. Not to mention that repeat jumpscares would’ve totally screwed the game’s tension.
