I had a summer internship for Griffith Company, a Construction Company out of Brea. I did not feel like I was doing a good job, I wasn't asked to return, and I feel defeated and burtout. The estimating portion was fun but I dont feel like I was able to use anything I learned in school. I created an integral for estimating the concrete needed for a minor structure and my supervisor was upset about it and told me I need to use basic geometry (Which was aproximatley the same value, +/- 0.3 cu.yd.). I chose Civil Engineering as a career because I love math and I want to be able to use this skill to benifit the community. I love my statics, mechanics of materials, and structural analysis classes. I did not like my Internship very much. Ive been working hard to keep good grades and averaging 15 or more units for the past 2 years. After this Internship I feel defeated and uninterested in school. This channel has been an outlet for my stuggles. Your stories has been motivating and keep me going. You really are an inspiration!

Congratulations Mat, you’ve inspired me to follow your footsteps. I remember switching to civil engineering from nursing at a community college. Now I’m 3 semesters away from graduation at Csuf. It’s scary, stressful and surprisingly rewarding. The only thing that’s stressing me is taking steel and concrete design this coming semester since I heard it’s one of the hardest.

Happy to hear, Matt. Remember health is a spectrum, like you’re practicing, and aspects, can come and go. But I’m glad to see an inspiration of mine is doing well.

I commented on this on your ''Day in the life of a structural engineer'' video, and you responded that that's the routine of any desk job more or less. Good to see you are finding (or trying to find) time to do other stuff too. I am getting my license this year, and surely , this will be a future guide for my life. Thanks a lot Mat!! You are the person that we all wish we had when starting our careers!

I recommend picking up the saxophone if you can afford it as a hobby (I am biased though because I grew up around musicians and I would do math and physics homework while they were making music). As a structural engineer (non licensed), it helps me relax. One notable sax player who did this in the 90s is named Everette Harp who started off as an accountant. Something about working in the office will turn you on to it and it becomes a secret stress relief. He dropped accounting for sax full time and got paid more for it.

Test is brutal. I'm in Florida and have no Seismic experience in practice. 1 essay question ruined my test each time and wasn't able to pass the lateral portion. Ended up with major neck/should issues from all the studying over 2-2.5 years and now unable to physically sit and take the exam. Luckily, I don't actually need to pass the SE as Florida doesn't recognize it, but tough all the same. Congrats on passing!

Eng. and planning to do PhD as well(my profs counting with me too), however lately I really like learning about physics and more maths.. Do you know about some research topic or something that can sooth my urge for those pure sciences? Thanks

What's up Engr. Mat, I'm very interested in designing buildings, especially houses. In my projects, I think about the aesthetics of the buildings and it's functionability in and out. I'm currently in 2nd yr of my college (civil engineer), should I switch to architecture or are the things I'm interested in is already included in a civil engineer's job
