The o2 sensors will NOT work from an m52: m52 - weird titania 5v sensors m52tu/m54 - your typical average zirconia 1v sensors
@fcpeuro

Learned about this after the fact and this is a good point. The challenge on the M52 manifolds with the M54 harness is the length of the O2 sensors. But, M52 manifolds were bolted up to M52TU's in South Africa so there are plug-and-play O2 sensors with the correct length available, p/n 11781437586. They have the correct connectors for the M54 harness and are the generic 1V zirconia sensors.

That Case Bays clutch line was a life saver when I did my e36 manual swap last year. Manual cars have a support to stablize the hard line coming from the slave welded to the tunnel - of course not there on the auto's. Spent ages trying to work out the best solution to keep the original hard line from self distructing till I found that line.

Great to see this swap done! I have an E36 Touring 6cyl (320i) and have been contemplating an M54 swap. I would love to see a video and/or article on your site about the electronics side of the swap... it was kind of glossed over in the videos. Also a parts list would be fantastic, especially parts that were massaged to make the swap work.

S52 is a better idea. Better engine and less to deal with. M54 likes to eat oil and the electronics can be finicky. Or do S54. That's the most popular.

@@HarveyRacing-t5r 320i = Europe. No S52s over here. S54s cost 2x what your average E36 320i costs. M54s are common and cheap. And if you're going to swap an engine, you might as well rebuild it... And an M54 is a much better engine than an S52. Continuously variable double VANOS is no joke. Slap an M50 manifold and some cams on an M54 and you're easily making more power and torque (much earlier too) than the equivalently modified S52.

The engine mount (rubber) to use are the E34 M50 (520i 525i) as the pins are offset and have a lot of leeway. They are solid and not the E36 hydraulic style yet do not transmit much, if any more vibration.

can someone explain the "swapping to the 4 pin coolant sensor thing" to me.. i am in the middle of this swap and i cant figure out how to make the temp gauge work (read right) in my original cluster. i wanted to add the old sensor from my 2.0 m52 in the radiator but that doesn't fit... and i don't know which pin to use from the 4 pin connector.

I make an adapter harness for that. I can do both CANbus (for Z3 cluster with working CEL and A/C) or non-CANbus (original cluster and no solution for CEL or A/C). I've been making them since 2013. I invented it.

Check engine light. You need the Z3 M54 cluster for it to work. Ideally you'll want a Z3 M54 donor car and swap over the harness with matching cluster and engine computer. I discontinued the adapter harness business, but I made a DIY guide on the R3vlimited forum under the S54 & M54 swap section. I haven't added the E36 or M54 info yet, but the swap is almost identical to an S54 swap. So it would be better to do an S54 if you're going to the trouble of swapping it, or keep it simple and go with S52 which is a better engine than M54 also. Even M52b28 is a better choice than M54b25 and you can plug that right in without having to worry about anything. @@owenpinnock7159

Hey Gareth, I did a similar thing but with a M52>M52tu dual vanos. How did you sort the speed signal from the ABS and also the M54 requires 2 additional labmda O2 sensors, the computer won’t let these error go away and also runs the fuel super rich. Do you perhaps have a solution for the MS41 > MS42 adaptation for the gen difference?
