Oh man do you guys bring back memories. I'm 62 and we just stopped picking corn and went to shelling, I got a bum knee and my son has trouble with his hip plus all our cribs a wood and shot. Dad started with a woods then his brother bought an 88 oliver and an oliver mounted picker. Dad said that it was heavy and they broke a rear axle one year in sub 0 weather in the driveway. They jacked it up and changed it there. That next year they traded on a New Idea, much lighter and A LOT easier to mount. Still remember that 88 in the chicken house that we used for a shop, had to support the whole back end and switch the tires, cast hubs and all side for side to fit the picker. but after that it went on slick. I helped my maternal grandpa mount his John Deere one time, good picker but a nightmare to mount. We went from an 8 roll to a twelve roll later. I only ever ran it one time to open a neighbors field. Dad always picked with our neighbor, his second cousin Maurice. He always ran the picker, he had 5 boys and they did their own. Dad just had me and all we ever did was unload. I remember Maurice coming off that thing black as the ace of spades some years. Then we went to narrow rows, bought a 400 JD picker, damn good machine but too heavy really side dragged in wet years. Finally purchased a used 1970's 701 uni picker. I kept that thing running for over 30 years. finally retired that thing and got a nice 708. Like going from a gremlin to a caddy. Only used it for 4 years and now we're done. I think I'm going to put a sheller on it just for the hell of it. Just watching you mount and use that picker almost made me cry. PS I live about 10 miles from the old New Idea plant in Coldwater Ohio. Always like UNI's Thanks again David Osterloh Maria Stein, Ohio

i grew up on a farm in central Iowa. The last year Dad and I picked ear corn was in 1970. December 10th he decided to go deer hunting with friends, and said, "If you want to, the tractor is full of gas and there's 2 empty (Stanhoist barge box)wagons down at the south farm." I could tell by his tone of voice he didn't really expect me to go pick corn in 10 degree weather. But teenagers can be stubborn, so I drove down to the south farm, fully expecting the old John Deere 620 (with a New Idea picker mounted on it) wouldn't start, and I could tell Dad that I at least tried. Well, she popped right off and I was stuck filling both wagons, crouched down to get as much engine heat as I could. Dad was pleased when he got home that night.

I thought we were the only ones still picking corn with mounted new Idea pickers. We mount on a Farmall M and I've been doing it so long that I can get the tractor ready and mount it on by myself in around three hours. Takes the most time getting the tractor ready than it does to mount the picker. You did a great job documenting how to mount a picker. 👍

Talk about something interesting to watch and know about, the old school tractor mounted corn picker set-up, i don't know why KZitem sets up my feed to show the newer videos first then shows the older ones but it did make it just as interesting to see the video of your harvesting of the corn then show the video of you telling about and hooking up the old harvester, love these types of videos, i also love watching the one's of different Tractors and Combines the big machines showing how they operate, but it's nothing like watching a farmer using this older equipment and making good use of it to get the job's done that have to get done, great videos my friend good luck with all you do in the operation of your farm.

Brought back memories. Dad bought a new New Idea picker in the fall of 1972. 319 gathering unit, 322 twelve roll shucking bed, and a 315 sheller. Mounted it on a 1550 Oliver for 10 years or so. We normally kept the original wide front on the Oliver as we plowed, planted, sprayed etc. with it too, so we changed that out every fall as well for some added fun. Overall, with some help it’s not a bad job to mount and the New Idea does a good job both picking on the ear and shelling. We farmed in central IN then, and sold the outfit to somebody in Wisconsin. Thanks for sharing, good job!

We always did this with my uncle Lars, He'd put his IH 450 on the JD chopper & we had a W-9 on the JD silo blower. Would chop into truck boxes a 8'x12' box with hoist & back up to the JD silo blower & fill the silo. Had two silo's to fill. We quit do this in the mid 1960"s. I grew up on my grandparents farm in the 80's and we still picked corn with a mounted New Idea picker on a Farmall M . Spent a lot of hours dodging ears of corn in the back of wagon . My grandpa had a tractor for every job on the farm so I never saw the picker ever come off and on . I wish I had the money to buy a picker and tractor to save from going to scrap and to just play around on to be honest . We got about a 2 acre field that I could plant out if I was ever to get one . New to the channel and really enjoyed watching. When I was 7 years old back in 1965 my job was to drive a Farmall B with a two wheel trailer and my parents and grandparents would pick corn by hand and throw it in the trailer. When I got older then I had the luxury to pick it by hand. Later on my dad got a one row Idea corn picker and pulled it behind his Farmall 200. Then I had the job to get in the trailer with a pitch fork and make sure it was spread evenly to get the most amount of corn in the trailer. It was hard work but by the end of the day back then ,we really felt like something was accomplished. Thanks again for the great video.

My cousin in Iowa was fortunate in that as he upgradeded his farm he bought eventually bought a larger tillage tractor and was able to leave his cornpicker on either an H or M international permanently he farmed roughly 300 acres and ran several head of beef cattle mostly by himself with his wife and daughter in 1983 the drought was so bad that he and a neighbor took and lined his neighbors old dairy barn slab with round bales and made an emergency trench silo and tgey cut the majority of their corn crop for winter feed that year. Glad he had that option. He had bought a roundbaler in the late 70's primarily because of the labor problems associated with needed for square baling, same reason another cousin in western Arkansas went from square bales to round balesin the early 80's

I used a two row, with the 12 roll bed pull type. It was harder to open up the fields, so, sometimes i chopped some of the corn to get them open. But, I liked the New Idea, because it took all of five minutes to hook up, and, did not tie up a tractor, if i wanted to use it. I ofter would pick during the day, and, then switch over and do some tillage in the evening. I did think about buying a tractor, and, having a mounted plow on it permanently, but, just decided to put up with the hassle of opening up the fields.

I am still picking about 40 acres a year with a super mta and 319 picker here in West Virginia. Thanks for a great video!

Thanks for this video. Learned a lot. Never been around mounting a corn picker before. It seemed my dad always hired someone to pick or combine his field corn. They have a reputation as very dangerous machines. I remember at least one friend of my dad lost both arms because he tried to clear the machine with it running.

Every year when I was a kid we had to mount a New idea picker to a 4020 John Deere. EVERY YEAR! Until I moved away and then dad built a few grain bins and combined everything.

Seems like that's very common, once the kids move off the farm then the nice and easy to use equipment shows up lol!

I came close to buying a one or two row pull type picker in the early 80's but, I didn't have the corn cribs or the livestock to justify it. I usally planted a 1 acre of field corn and hand picked it and put it in the old barn crib for our two heifers

Pretty impressive. Used to take two days to mount a corn picker, you got the job done in under 27 minutes. Great video!!!
