Getting Started in Beekeeping: 14: Adult Honeybee Diseases - The Norfolk Honey Co. #Beekeeping
This series of videos is designed for the new beekeeper or for someone who is thinking of starting beekeeping for the very first time.
In this video I look at how the beginner beekeeper can watch out for Adult Honeybee diseases that might cause challenges to the beekeeper.
Included in these are Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae, two microsporidian infections of the gut of the honeybee that can cause lethargy, dysentery and the collapse of the colony. I talk about how you can reduce the effect of Nosema by changing combs, using the Bailey comb exchange or by performing a shook swarm.
I then talk about the Acarine mite that infects the first thoracic trachea of the honeybee and discuss how through dissection it can be identified.
Finally I introduce the varroa mite not only as a pest that infects colonies but also as a vector for the transmission of various other pathogens such as viruses including Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus and show a video of what infected honeybees with Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus looks like.
Beekeeping can be a total pleasure but beekeeping can also be a total pain! Get things wrong and beekeeping becomes a frustration and not a joy.
In this basic beekeeping series called Getting Started in Beekeeping I aim to help anyone who is thinking of starting beekeeping or has just started beekeeping to gain more knowledge and understanding about beekeeping and therefore enjoy the beekeeping experience even more.
