Today I rebuild 2 Centurion starter motors, and fit one back in the centurion Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle! Then I start it for the first time in 7 months!
Such a bad design almost like the manufacturer wanted to sell loads of spare starter motors to the MOD.

@Shoorit

@@solobushcraft1the small gears are attached to the starter motor so the full load of the engine isn’t going through them because of the planetary gear box. It's because the engine is basically an aircraft engine. You have to make the starter as light as possible for in the air it is just dead weight that your carrying around for no reason.

like in everything. you have to create a weak point...to allow it to fail...rather a gear than the actual motor explodes as it spins at engine speed and throws all the windings out.

Really interesting video thanks. Both the BARV and the Chieftain look great. Seeing the tow hooks on the front of the Chieftain reminded me that they were a good early warning system for someone climbing onto the tank and you were in the turret having a skive. The natural way to climb up was to put your foot on the tow hook, grab hold of the fording plate and heave yourself up. But when you put your weight on the tow hook, it would move slightly and clunk against the hull. This could be heard in the turret, giving you enough time to put away your newspaper and get on with some work.

I find it rather surprising that they use grease rather than gear oil in the gearbox. It was noticeable that when you opened both boxes the grease had flung to the outside leaving the gears dry. I would suggest that this would contribute to the weakness of the gearbox itself. While the use of oil would complicate the construction with the need for oil seals on the shaft and drain plugs etc. it would provide far better lubrication.
@gregb5023
Жыл бұрын
I noticed that as well. Perhaps a switch to a '00' grease may be a better choice. That's what is used in snowblower auger gearboxes. It performs really well in cold conditions. The starter motor is never going to run long enough to turn that thick grease into runny grease. It explains the clean grease on the outside never thinning out and getting to where it's needed.

Hey, that looks like a standard mount for a radial engine with a three jaw right hand rotation. I used a 3350 Wright inertia starter on my tank engine. It might be a considerable upgrade for your tanks? It does not appear to be any larger that the original. Unfortunately, the guy I was getting them from has recently passed away. I think the last one I bought from him was 375$ US. PS, they have an adjustable clutch to prevent damage during a backfire.

These are an aircraft starter and relatively 'light' and compact. When they designed the Meteor M120 for the Carnarvon/Conqueror , they built in more strength (but used Lucas fuel injection) including replacing the starter with a much bigger unit and a ring gear. Often wondered why these improvements weren't incorporated into the Cent engine.

Tungsten disulfide powder will help. It is an order of magnitude better than low utility, more expensive moly grease. Add the powder to any grease or oil, and if there are no wet clutches, everything will work MUCH better and last MUCH longer. It works great for old bearings with some bumps, it evens out and wears normally over time because there is the tungsten sulfur platelets that embed into metal and will stop galling and friction when the grease or oil cushion gets pushed into metal metal contact. This will absolutely fix the starter problems if they are new or on their last leg, BUT still have some tooth to grab onto. It will lower the heat problem on the small gear, and metal to metal problem because the tungsten sulfur will lubricate, like graphite almost, but actually much more effectively than moly or graphite because the tungsten bonding is stronger. Make sure you dont buy straight up tungsten though or impure tungsten disulfie tho. Not sure about graphite containing grease, it sounds like that could work too. Anyways, Micron powder tungsten disulfite. In grease until it turns gray or dark grey will work in this certain circumstance.

That would be better served with an oil bath rather than a load of grease which just gets pushed aside. How about installing a grease nipple to recharge the grease and enhance lubrication and also a breather pipe to let the excess grease escape???

Any decent engineering company that does gear cutting should be able to sort you out with some good gears in high carbon steel. The grease that was in them to start with was shite. Also (and this isn't an I told you so comment) using fifth wheel grease won't help as it's the wrong type of grease for gearing. We used to have grease in the army called XG276 which was designed for this type of application. Ideally a lithium complex based grease is what you want. I think 5th wheel grease is graphite. But at least it will lube it temporarily. When you opened them up you could see the grease was basically solid and doing nothing.
