The official report by David Wills, agent of the Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg, is packed with details about the origins of the project. Of particular interest is the work done by Samuel Weaver, a retired photographer who carefully examined disinterred bodies that had been hastily buried in the days following the battle, searching for clues to their identities.
