This band rocks. They are purposefully campy. The lead singer is a persona that changes from time to time. Currently he goes by Cardinal Copia. They treat the devil worshiping aspects with a metal wink and a nod. They basically kick all kinds of ass.

Papa Emeritus III told Diablo Rock: Initially, this song was thought of as a complete dome theme, with an even longer intro-“Devil Church.” As we already had other songs that had these great refrains we thought about leaving long choruses out. But in a coffee break, the chorus appeared out of nowhere and we put aside our dome theme without chorus and ended with a heavy power ballad. Lyrically, it is a simulation of the relationship between religious authority (church or sect) against the small person who can not differentiate empathy from pure manipulation. Everything disguised as a love song.

"This is the kind of music the Devil would use to lure people in. Not that hardcore Black metal stuff which actively pushes people away". LOL . I read that somewhere and i agree. This band is great and i got into them super late but it was worth the wait.

This is far and beyond their best, in my opinion. It's not traditionally heavy like you'd expect from a band with their look, but thematically and vocally the song carries such a heavy weight. Papa's voice is calming and soothing. There is a longing there that is barely ever touched on in metal/rock.

Ghost is a unique band, and that is a good thing. Aside from the imagery they are very talented. If you listen closely you can hear influences from all over the realm of rock and metal. Pink Floyd, Beatles, Metallica, so on. I've seen them twice and both were great shows

I've always interpreted the song as the Devil claiming that he is above God because he doesn't ask you to be something you're not. He "sees through the scars inside you" and knows that "your soul is not tainted" even though God/the Church would lead you to believe that because your yours sins and transgressions you are not worthy of love/heaven. Satan Sees you for what you are and accepts that and loves you even more for it; however, there is the darker subtext with the whole "can't you see that you're lost without me". So it's all about Satan trying to seduce someone

I had never heard Ghost prior to a few months ago...but I've been hooked ever since. Tobias and his band, even though anonymous, are pros...definitely top of their game and world class pro musicians. And the most exciting factor of Ghost, in my opinion, is that they aren't defined to any set classification...they aren't hard rock, metal, black metal, classical...they are none of these yet all of these. And the religious innuendo is awesome! Ghost is able to teeter on both sides of light and darkness...which is what is makes this band so different and interesting as opposed to your typical band nowadays. I'm hoping they come to LA soon, I'll be the first to buy tickets:}

Square Hammer 2. He Is (watch the actual video and lyrics) 3. Year Zero 4. Ritual 5. Miasma (Extra Credit....Instrumental but so good) Tobias is a musical genius and this past tour cycle he finally was able to afford to put together a touring band with enough members to no longer have to run tracks (except for special effects, and stuff). 8 people...3 guitarists, 2 keyboardists, bass, drums, and him (as Cardinal Copia). The devil has manipulated some of the hearts within the church as well, creating dissent and confusion among the people. Most people I know who are anti religion have been hurt or wronged by some person or institution in the past. Cruel and weak people are his tools, as is ambiguous manipulations. If the entire thing were the good pure church vs. dark evil, there wouldn't be much hope for Satan. But muddying the waters, sewing doubt and wearing down resolve of people, (using other people as the tools to do so) makes the spiritual journey various shades of grey, rather than a simple choice between black and white. It's not meant to be an easy journey to find faith, so many simply refuse it. The devil seeks out opportunities like that.

I’m really glad they put this in the context of kids or it would be really twisted.(Said with love.) She is “special.” He knows it. He’s telling her she doesn’t have to be feel marginalized. She’s not alone anymore. That’s the alchemy of Ghost. They embrace those of us who deviate from the status quo, a little or a lot. While the subject matter is dark, the music itself is soaring and gorgeous and every song has a hook. You come away from every song feeling cathartic. Their music brings hope and a way to find joy in living. I think that’s Tobias’ driving desire. To make everyone feel included and in on it. Once you find Ghost, no other music is as satisfying.

Immediately after the show , I went to New Orleans for Voodoofest and Ghost on stage on Halloween night was incredible.

Ghost have a lot of catchy and great songs. I actually didn't like them when they first appeared here in Sweden. But their third album Meliora won me over. The whole image and concept of the band (which I thought was silly at first) is rather smart, they stand out and have a recognizable style now. Not sure you should take the lyrics too serious or even make an effort to analyze them - it's just entertainment - and surely the lyrics are made to fit the overall concept. Some religious people might get upset... but no - Ghost don't worship the devil and sacrifice virgins at midnight...it's all fun and gimmicks. You know the song "Here comes the Sun" by the Beatles? That's a song I never thought could be made different (and still sound good) Well...check out the version Ghost recorded - it's genious! \m/

Ghost's 2013 EP, "If You Have Ghost", was produced by Dave Grohl and he played drums and/or guitar on a couple of tracks. Agreed. "I can see through the scars inside you", looking out from within. But it's also about finally finding somewhere to belong. I do not see the possessed one as a victim in this song. When no one in the world seems to understand you and you find that special someone... "You and i see eye to eye"

Ghost has a lot of catchy music and a gimmick that works. Not the music I'm usually into, but I saw them live and they do put on a good show.

This song is great but i think it is easy to find the influences to it. They reworked the intro to South of Heaven by Slayer, mixed in with some Alice in Chains harmonies during the verses to the Type O Negative pretty bridge/chorus (I practically started singing "Loving you was like loving the dead" from black no.1). None of this is me complaining, i think it is genius, i loved hearing this on the radio when it first came out, its just a 46yr old metalhead's two cents.

Ghost is an interesting project. it's almost like a living art installation. I've found the easiest way to understand it is to view Ghost's music should be viewed as religious music where the predominant religion is Satanism. this song is about God speaking to someone, and 'awakening' them. as it is Ghost, that God is Lucifer.

Most people don't catch it but that's a kid playing Papa. The joke is his parents are in the audience.

I think the song and the lyrics make much more sense when you know that "Cirice" is the old english word for "church"

I had never heard of them (I know, I’m uncultured 😂) but I’m definitely checking out more of their stuff now! Any suggestions of songs I should listen to? Edit: I’ve listened to Dance macabre, Rats, He is and Square Hammer and I like what I’m hearing! Square Hammer actually sounds pretty familiar. Edit #2: I’ve been listening to their music a lot and *EVERY* single song is just awesome! I just can’t believe I had never heard of them before! For anyone who wants to discover them I would recommend the song I already listed as well as Year Zero, Monstrance Clock, Jiggolo Har Meggido, If You Have Ghosts, Stand By Him, Witch Image, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen, Absolution, Deus in Absentia, Prime Mover, Elizabeth and Death Knell. These are just suggestions though, because like I said, I don’t think any of their songs are bad, they’re all awesome so feel free to discover them!

Georges Georges Ritual, Elizabeth, Year Zero, Secular Haze, Monstrance Clock. I really like their cover of the song Bible, it’s quite mellow.

Abhorrent Lullabies By the time I posted this comment I listened to every one of their song and they really are one of my favorite bands now! I can’t believe I had never heard of them before, their music is just so awesome and unique! It’s sad that because of the satanic theme they are banned from most radio, although I did hear some of their songs on some radios recently. And yes, they did a very nice cover of Bible.
