Wikipedia: Helen Alving is about to dedicate an orphanage she has built in memory of her late husband, Captain Alving. She reveals to Pastor Manders that her marriage was secretly miserable because her husband was unfaithful. She has built the orphanage to deplete her husband's wealth so that their son Oswald will not inherit anything from him. Pastor Manders once advised her to return to her husband despite his philandering, and she followed his advice in the hope that she could reform him. But her husband continued his affairs until his death, and Mrs. Alving stayed with him to protect her son from the taint of scandal and for fear of being shunned by the community. In the course of the play, she discovers that her son Oswald (whom she had sent away to avoid his being corrupted by his father) is suffering from syphilis that she believes he inherited from his father.[a] She also discovers that Oswald has fallen in love with her maid Regina Engstrand, who is revealed to be the illegitimate daughter of Captain Alving and is therefore Oswald's half-sister. A sub-plot involves a carpenter, Jacob Engstrand, who married Regina's mother when she was already pregnant. He regards Regina as his own daughter. He is with unaware, or pretends to be, that Captain Alving was Regina's father. Having recently completed his work building Mrs. Alving's orphanage, Engstrand announces his ambition to open a hostel for seafarers. He tries to persuade Regina to leave Mrs. Alving and help him run the hostel, but she refuses. The night before the orphanage is due to open, Engstrand asks Pastor Manders to hold a prayer-meeting there. Later that night, the orphanage burns down. Earlier, Manders had persuaded Mrs. Alving not to insure the orphanage, as to do so would imply a lack of faith in divine providence. Engstrand says the blaze was caused by Manders' carelessness with a candle and offers to take the blame, which Manders readily accepts. Manders in turn offers to support Engstrand's hostel. When Regina and Oswald's sibling relationship is exposed, Regina departs, leaving Oswald in anguish. He asks his mother to help him avoid the late stages of syphilis with a fatal morphine overdose. She agrees, but only if it becomes necessary. The play concludes with Mrs. Alving having to confront the decision of whether or not to euthanize her son in accordance with his wishes.[8]

@@j.o.1516 I have found this - When a baby gets syphilis from his mother during pregnancy, it's called congenital syphilis. Congenital means that it's present at birth. Congenital syphilis is completely preventable. The only way your baby can get congenital syphilis is if you have syphilis and pass it to your baby during pregnancy or vaginal birth - so I think mother can get it from the father and then pass it on to the child.

Well, appart for the obious link between syfilis and AIDS; the stigma, lies and shame, people to these day live with, due to failing to fullfill others and owns expectaions, and dificulty of excepting sexuallity. The closest that comes in mind, is the strong female caracter - that has for centuries been stupified, but in Ibsen stays out like a pillar and beam.
@neoepicurean3772

@@MrNikodemus5 Hmm, you think that strong female characters were absent from theatre before Ibsen? What period are you suggesting? Seems there has been strong female characters all they way back to Antigone? There was a pause in all but religious theatre through the 'dark ages' but strong female characters were present through the Viking saga's and when theatre came back females were certainly not presented as any weaker than the male characters.

@@neoepicurean3772 I'm not a scholar on the topic female leed positions in drama, but in Norway, Ibsen's plays caused enormous dabates on womens positions in society. This play more than any, touching several taboos of the time. Sexual behaviour, inheritance of sin, and women position. And in addition the well corrected punch on the church and clergy - their self confidence and unquestioned position in society.
@neoepicurean3772

@@MrNikodemus5 Er du Norsk? Jeg kan faktisk snakke ganske bra Norsk. I think the controversy around Ibsen's plays were on the subject matter and challenges to social norms, rather than the fact that a woman was portrayed as strong per se. I mean incest would still be a shocking central theme in a play, let alone in the Victorian era of the 1880s - but incest was also the theme of Oedipus Rex in 400 BC! However, I agree that Nora's behaviour in A Doll's House was perhaps more in line with later feminist themes of challenging gender roles in marriage. But again, this wasn't so much the 'strength' of her character, rather the actions that she chose to do.

As much as I enjoyed the acting and all the other components about this production: the story line itself was confounding to me. Just when I would think I understood what was going on, the plot would change again until by the end of the play I was sure I understood very little. All I was left with was a gawdawful feeling of hopelessness and depression. Good grief. Not sorry to have seen this..........but I need an infusion of some light comedy STAT.

What could only be explained by inference when the play was written in the 19th century is that Oswald has secondary syphilis contracted from his dissolute father who forced him to smoke his pipe as a three year old. Like AIDS, syphilis could be contracted through an exchange of fluids if, for example, the father had a chancre in his mouth. Perhaps it was not clear to you either, that Regina is Oswald's half-sister, the result of his father getting the previous servant, Johanna, pregnant. The action at the very end of the play is somewhat telescoped as if the 'softening of the brain' has occurred suddenly, as if Oswald has had a stroke. The 'give me the sun, mother, indicates that Oswald has progressed to a child-like state.
