Achatina Achatina commonly called the AFRICAN GIANT SNAIL is a prolific breeder specie of snail that is seen locally around us. Lissachatina is a species of large land snail that belongs to the subfamily Achatinidae. It is also called the Giant African land snail and it shares the common name "GIANT AFRICAN SNAIL" with other species of snails such as ACHATINA ACHATINA and ARCHACHATINA MARGINATA.This snail is beleived to be native to WEST AFRICA...their eggs are cream, about 5mm in diameter laid below the soil surface or on the sides of the logs in batches of between 200-300, the eggs hatch within 1-2 weeks. One snail can lay up to a 1000 eggs per year., and they can live up to approximately 5 years. In this video, we are going to see some of their eggs in the pen and our point of emphasis in this video is going to be the sorting of juvenile snails of a month old otherwise called "INFANT MOLLUSK" from the matured snails.
Why do we sort snails according to their age? The answer is not far fetched,,,over crowding normally is not advisable for "HUMANS" "PLANTS" and "ANIMALS" and now for snails perse it can lead to "UNHEALTHY COMPETITION" "FOR FOOD" "WATER" and "SPACE" and this can retard growth and that will in the long run lead to poor productivity, we dont want this to happen in our farm. The adult snails will have upper hands in consuming the food and water thereby leaving behind the juvinile snails to go hungry or starve to death. Remember, many snails and slugs are saprophagic, meaning they feed on decaying matter and dead animals. Some of them like the ARION SLUGS wont hesitate to eat dead snails or slugs of their own kind. So to avoid cannibalism in the snail pen, to avoid overcrowding and to avoid unhealthy competition for food, water and other useful resources, we do sort them accordingly.
