STORYLINE:
Filipinos in the provincial town of San Fernando were getting into the Christmas spirit on Saturday, as they marvelled at eight giant kaleidoscopic lanterns put on display for an annual festival.
Every year the competitive Giant Lantern Festival draws huge crowds to the town, situated in the province of Pampanga, which prides itself on being the Christmas capital of the Philippines.
Lantern making is an important cottage industry for thousands of residents, particularly during the Christmas season.
Much effort has been poured into every entry, each showcasing wonderful kaleidoscope play of lights, synchronised with background music.
Each lantern is at least 18 feet (six metres) in diameter, and has at least 5,000 light bulbs, all of which are wired to a giant rotor at the back of the lantern.
The festival began 70 years ago, when townsfolk would bring lanterns lit by candles for a Christmas gathering after hearing mass.
The best lantern among the eight finalists displayed was chosen based on the colour combination and the best play of lights against the tempo of the music. A cash prize and trophy were awarded to the makers of the winning lantern.
