We bought some giant gourami fishes for our farm. 30 Black Giant Gourami and 30 Pink Giant Gourami were bought from a person in Kottayam. The Black Giant Gourami is about a year old. It is about seven inches in size. But the Pink Giant Gourami is only four inches in size. It was said to be about six months old. The farm also has two pair of four-year-old giant gourami. Through this video we would like to share stories about our farm as well as a bit about giant Gourami. Try watching the video till the end.
Giant gourami is a fish that can be raised at home at a very low cost. But it attains full growth very gradually. Therefore, it is not possible to expect a sudden profit return from this giant gourami aquaculture. The Black Giant Gourami we bought is about a year old. Still, it is only 7 inches in size. Giant gourami generally grows slowly over the first year. However, in the second and third years, it gains weight close to one kilogram each.
Our two pair giant gourami, about four years old are growing in this round tank. This round tank does not have enough facilities to grow large giant gouramis. Therefore they haven’t bred yet. We put the fish in this one tank temporarily because we don’t have enough facilities in our farm. This tank is beneath the terrace so the tank does not get enough sunlight. Therefore, the temperature of the water always remains very low.
Giant gourami is best grown in well-lit, green water. Giant gouramis are not interested in clear water. We intend to make such a tank and transfer them into that fish tank. At present the fish farm does not have adequate facilities.
These are the facilities available in our farm. It was then that confusion arose as to where to place the sixty giant gourami babies. The idea came to my mind the day before the fish fry were to be brought. The space between the two grow beds in this aquaponics unit was covered with two pieces of stone and a nylon sheet was spread on it. The tank is 7 meters long, 75 cm wide and 50cm high. Giant gourami of this size have a enough space to swim around in this arrangement. In order to create a rotation of the water in the tank, the water coming from the filter unit is fed into this tank and the overflow water from it is fed to the main tank.
We can grow giant gourami on the farm without any hassle at very low cost. There are many reasons for this.
First of all there is no need to give aeration to grow giant gouramis. Giant gourami have the ability to come to the surface of water and breathe atmospheric air. They have a special respiratory organ for that.
Secondly, Giant gourami will survive even if the water condition is a bit bad. They can overcome the variations of pH, ammonia to small extend in the water. However, if the ammonia in the water exceeds a certain limit, it is advisable to change the water slightly.
Thirdly, giant gouramis are fed with leaves. Leafy greens such as yam leaves, tapioca leaves and azolla are their favorite food. Therefore, the cost of fish feed can be saved. It is advisable not to feed them with pellets bought from the market. Regular feeding of pellets can lead to digestive problems and may lead to their sudden death.
Most of our aquaponics grow beds are cultivated with yam. It has two main purposes. First of all, yam grows pretty well in grow beds and is also a good feed for fishes such as giant gourami and tilapia. Therefore, the cost of feed can be very well reduced.
Giant gouramis have built nests for laying eggs. November is the normal season of them laying eggs. More information will be shared in our next video. Doubts and comments about the video can be commented below. If you like the video, don't forget to share it with others and subscribe to the channel. See you again with another video
