I did that to our old RCA crt with a cheap whiteboard magnet when I was young. My dad was so mad at me when it left a purple tinged spot on the screen. Somehow it self healed because my parents still have the same tv and it looks perfectly fine well over a decade later.

Because most CRT TVs have an automatic degaussing coil when it is powered up from cold. By unplugging it and waiting for a bit then plugging it back in. You will know if the degaussing circuit activates because you should hear a clunk or thunk sound as you plug it in.

That's one strong magnet. You can see it already interferes the screen when it likes a foot away from the TV.
@richardbeare11

Amazing, you can see how the magnet diverts the independent rgb electron beams' trajectories from their intended paths and perhaps manipulate the angle at which they strike/pass thru the shadow mask or aperture grill. You can see the magnetic field flux so clearly almost as if they were discrete lines of flux, though this is probably just the result of the continuous magnetic field gradient and how it influences the angle of the beams impending upon the shadow mask/aperture grill. Neat!

When I was a kid I was once playing with that one toy where it's two oval shaped magnets that you throw together in the air and it makes that buzzing sound when they clang together. I put one up against the TV and saw it distort the picture a little bit. Thinking it was cool, I did it a few more times until these two black marks stayed on the bottom of the screen. I didn't think anything about it until my dad came in and saw the marks on the TV. He knew immediately what happened and yelled "who put magnets up to the TV?!" Lucky with a quick turning the TV off and back on was able to reset the image and the black marks went away.

If you put the magnet right up to it once and pull it back and it's fine, then I very much doubt it'll ever distort the mask. It's going to be elastic deformation and not plastic. I very much doubt it'd be able to reach plastic deformation with any magnet like in the video. I just don't see a magnet being able to distort it.

There might also be a "degauss" option on the TV's menus, for a more extreme degauss. Also if the turning with your hands method doesn't work, stick a magnet to the end of a drill and spin it while removing it. That does it really well.
