You are seeing the various phases of loss of consciousness. What you are seeing here is lack of coordination and confusion and a common (but not always present) excitatory phase due to blood loss. This also happens with anesthesia. I'm a veterinarian btw. Edit- to further explain . THIS is the reality of this (death) by non "massive" exsanguination. You just don't normally witness it fully. This is what severe acute/ fatal looked like. It can be disturbing to witness if not fully understand what is going on. Is it painful? "Probably" not as much as one would imagine as long as this quick and mind is perturbed by blood loss quickly. That is why it is SO important to take as clean, quick, and ethical shots as possible. We owe it to these animals. And yes I'm a bow hunter as well.

Awesome buck! A hard video to watch, but unlike others, I don't think it was a bad shot. Based on entrance and the angling forward exit wound it looked like a good ethical shot. I have seen deer expire quicker from worse shots. Not all deer react the same when hit by an arrow. Some years ago I doubled lunged a 7 point that ran 40 yards out of the brush, then 200 yards across a cut soy bean field, over railroad tracks, and expired 40 yards inside the next woodlot. When I dressed him out, both lungs had an X in them. Go figure.

That buck was done after the first arrow. He just didnt know it or want to believe it. There was blood spurting out in a stream after every heart beat on his right side. They dont always fall like sack of potatoes and dead. This one is one of the longer ones that Ive seen to take to die. Talk about a huge will to live.

@@davidperry5631I think his point is many people like to watch a video and either 1.) assert their opinion as fact when they don’t have half of the information and weren’t there in person 2.) assume the worst, and bash the hunter Good example- one comment said “Wish you’d gotten a follow up shot sooner rather than worrying about filming” What they don’t consider is that 1) this camera is attached to my bow so I’m actually not focused on filming but staying ready and looking for the first opportunity at a follow up shot and 2) there are 2 other deer inside of 25 yards outside the frame of the camera view staring right at me after the first shot so I couldn’t grab another arrow without spooking them all. I do agree completely agree that comments and videos like this should be used as learning opportunities for all of us. Experienced and green alike

I wish I had taken picture when I cleaned him. This was not a gut shot. You are seeing the exit wound when the shot was slightly quartering to. The entry went right into the middle of the near side lung and this exit was right on the lower back end of the lung. The second shot entered high in the near side lung and exited in the liver.
@andyp4903

It’s easy to sit here and armchair quarterback so I will start with a congrats on taking a great old deer. With that being said, your first shot is clearly low and back. You may have clipped the bottom of the offside lung but there is no way you got that front side lung. Arrow to expiration of a true double lung shot is 30 seconds or less, 75% of the time. The variable on that time line is the amount of ground covered, sometimes they go on a hard death run, but with 30 seconds they crash. Again, not trying to armchair QB but, you should have stuck him again a lot sooner. It could have reduced the cringe factor of the video. Congrats
@whitetailhungry6899
9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the congrats but I’d love to see where you got your statistics because like I mentioned in replies to other comments with similar thoughts, I quarter the deer I kill myself. When I cleaned and quartered this deer both lungs were hit with the first arrow. The entry was mid way up and back 1/3 on front lung and exit was bottom back corner of offside lung. Second arrow entered high and back in the exit lung from 1st shot and exited out the liver.

Had a similar experience this year with a rifle. Got my a buck during my first year 'tracking' and solo but with the lack of snow it was more like a casual forest meander. He stood up and started browsing at most 15 yards away. Hit him low single lung (thought it was heart from the blood trail but during processing I gain a new respect for the concussive power of the 30-06) and he barely flinched. Walked maybe 15 yards before bedding and I bumped him once with my rookie excitement. He only walked another 10 yards before bedding for the last time. It was also pretty hard for me to watch his final moments like that even though the time between the shot and him expiring was 2 minutes at most. Hard to tell, it feels like it was forever but was over so quick.

Congratulations on the buck. I agree with the other comments, that was a little hard to watch. That buck took a while to pass. You didn’t smoke or smash but you did get him. Thanks for watching. Yes, i had time but what you can’t see in the video is that there was a 6 point and a doe within 30 yards of me and after the 1st shot they were both had me pegged. I didn’t think I could grab another arrow without spooking them all until he went thrashing through the brush. I then put another arrow in him the first chance I had. As for my setup, it only seems like the wrong side of the tree because the buck didn’t come through the strip of timber I was hunting which is why you see me filming the deer 100+ yards away rather than in bow range. Every time I made a move to where i last saw him, he and his doe shifted and did something different.

Believe it or not the deer had 3 holes in his lungs. If you go frame by frame on the 1st shot you’ll see the arrow kicked forward slightly from where you last see the fletching. 1st shot entry was mid way up the lung and on the outer edge. Exit was lower 1/3 of offside lung and outer edge bc the lung tapers down toward the front leg. 2nd shot entered high in the lung (exit lung from 1st shot) and exited out the diaphragm

Thanks for sharing, most are too afraid of pushback to post something like this, but it’s part of the game. I highly doubt he felt much…. He was delirious. Always crazy to see how tough a big mature Whitetail buck is. That’s a really nice buck as well!!!!!. Good deal putting a second shot in them. Always take a second shot if you can….. make holes!!! Can you tell us what you hit on the first shot?

Absolutely, I know the shot looks back but if you slow it down and go frame by frame which I am able to do on my editing software you can see the arrow kicks forward a bit right at impact. The entry was about midway up the lung and on the back edge of it, the exit was the bottom back 1/3 where the lungs diagonal down to the front leg ( about center of the lungs if you look at total lung length. Second arrow entered the same lung as the initial shot entry high in the lung and exited low out the diaphragm.

Congrats,but man this is what gives us as hunters a bad name.I know ya wanna leave this up.I would do a lot more editing to this a just tell the story.This was brutal!Ive been deer hunting 40yrs here in Tn.Ive only had that happen one time.Just a thought in re-editing this….

Thanks for the feedback and I’ll consider it. Honestly, I think most of what you see here is actually what happens the majority of the time when you shoot one and it runs off. We just don’t usually see it all unfold. I suspect 98% of people who watch this are hunters like you and I and I’m hoping others can learn the lesson I did which is no matter how good the first shot is, always be ready to get a quick follow up shot if you get the chance.

What kind of broadheads do you use sir? Im not a big fan of the rage. I did harvest a big 8 pt 3 years ago with a 3 bladed Rage. At 8 yards from the ground, i knocked him straight to the ground. I drew the bow while he was looking dead at me! He was in a rut craze and the deer lure had him goofy in the head. Nice buck Congratulations Sir!!
