Definitely. I've got the 2014 SGJ with the '61 zebra pups, I'm hoping to pick up one of these 2013 SGJ's with 490's sometime. Almost got one new back then but got a MIJ Fender Strat instead & got the SGJ the next year I'd like a chocolate or red one of the 2013's... my 2014 is a fireburst. Awesome lil guitars, they totally rock!

Agreed. These are my favorite guitars ever made by Gibson. I have close to 30 guitars... most of them world class, and I play my LPJ far more than any other guitar I own. If I could have just one guitar, it would be my LPJ. Partly it's because I'm not so afraid to scratch it or bump it. I also MUCH prefer the maple neck, for the same reason. I have never heard of an LPJ or SGJ neck snapping at the headstock. Every single one I have ever played or owned had a quartersawn eastern maple neck... you could damn near set it on the ground and stand on it!

Good guitars? Yes. Underrated? No. An underrated (often dissed) guitar would be the Ibanez Gio ART60. Which offers a similar feature set at 1/3 the cost.

I got the LPJ Goldtop with a thick C-shaped 50s neck. I never thought I was going to play the guitar much, as I already owned a much more expensive Custom Class 5 Les Paul with a "faster" neck. The LPJ has become my main guitar, It sound great, and I actually prefer its thick neck. I like the unfinished neck - it never gets sticky, and I`m not afraid of scratching it, cause this guitar wants to get beat up. It`s like having a wife with low self esteem. You can beat her up as much as you want without her objecting, and the more beat up she is, the better she looks.

It's probably already been mentioned, but the 2013 LPJ has 490R and 498T pickups. The 2013 SGJ does have 490R and 490T pickups...a subtle difference, but a difference nonetheless. btw: I picked up a new 2013 LPJ at GC on clearance for $479 w/ soft case. A crazy deal on an amazing, genuine USA Les Paul, I think...

I bought the LPJ in white as a stage back up to my expensive PRS Swamp Ash Special. The tone is unbelievable, crunchy and warm but without the overbearing weight of a regular Les Paul. It doesn't have the fancy finishes and hardware of the higher end models. But if you want that Les Paul sound, I'm telling you this thing delivers and at a fraction of the price. Now you can probably get them even cheaper used.

October 2023 at present. I bo't my white LPJ2013 IN 2013. It's the expensivest guitar I own, all my 35 others are Squier and Fender on down to obscure bottom feeders. The LPJ 2013 is the HEAVIEST guitar I've ever held. Setup and playability were/are perfect from store. The finish appears to consist of a poorly applied whitewash atop the wood. ANY Epiphone or Squier finish is superior to this. But that is insignificant because of how nice it is to use it WHILE SITTING. I have other cheaper guitars here that are just as good in setup and feel. But I WON'T say anything bad or insulting about the LPJ2013, nor would I sell it. It's simply a pleasing guitar to work with. While seated.

Bought a 2013 Cherry Satin LPJ lefty a few weeks ago from sam-ash for 429$. Sounds great right out of the box but I gutted it and im putting all new electronics/pickups in it, changing the tuners, bone nut etc... to get it to sound, play and look the way I want. I just saw that samash got the Chocolate Satin LPJ's in stock for the same price so I just went there today and put a deposit on one and am picking it up when it gets to the store. Amazing guitars, can't believe a USA made gibson les paul is selling for 429$. These guitars really are true Gibson les pauls, they are just cheaper in price because there is no binding, no finish, etc... Its just a really stripped down and basic les paul, but its a great guitar. The satin finish feels amazing on your hands when you play it. These guitars do come pretty ugly looking with all the black hardware and shit... I changed all the hardware to a cream color, added the cream color grover tulip tuners, and added a cream pickguard, and im planning on putting in Manlius Landmark PAF pickups in both of my LPJ's. Regardless of how it looks 429$ for a usa made LP is a steal.

Just got a chocolate 2013 clearance vs 2014. 490's are punchy and dynamic whereas the zebras are your typical turn it to 11 generic. Also couldn't stomach the giant "120th Anniversary" fret marker on the new ones. Makes a guitar look like a birthday cake IMO and detracts from the simplicity of this particular series even moreso. This guitar looks and sounds like wood and competes amazingly well with its brothers in my collection, a 76 Explorer and an 81 V.

I used "Flitz" - It's an amazing product that will bring just about anything to a mirror shine with little effort. I'm sure many other similar products would work. You don't have to get fancy... just a tiny amount (1/2 the volume of a pea) on an old t-shirt, and some circular rubs and it's shiny. After you're finished with your guitar, it'll make your plastic headlight covers look brand new as well. During bends, it feels like your fingers are wearing ice skates if you polish your frets with it too.

According to the Gibson website, the LPJ has the 498T and the SGJ has the 490T. 498 has alnico 5 magnets, the 490 has alnico 2. The 498 seems to have a better sound from what I can tell (more output and much brighter and clearer).

The pickups were changed after this video was made. The earlier models had 490r and 490t as in this video. The current models have the 'zebra coil' pickups, which look cooler but I don't know if they are better. The 490r and t are still used on some pretty good Gibsons. The neck is quite fat and the frets high so if you are fussy about those things you might test drive one. But any way you slice it it's a really good guitar for the money with a nice woody tone.
