To be honest, I listened on my car stereo and I don’t hear a difference. If there is a difference, it’s so subtle that only an obsessive guitar-tone geek would care. 57 seem to me a bit more hollow sounding, a bit more scooped and have more bite. The SD A2 pro seems to me to add some creamy body, and sweetness. I just realized that these are two totally different guitars, and I'm one of those who believes wooden guitars can vary in tone, which in my experience definitely survives the transition through the pickups... so how much of this tone we are hearing is from the pickups or from the guitar?

@adamwatson6916
2 жыл бұрын
@@markstewart8171 I have had 2 sets of the slash pups and several 57 sets and with the slash pickups you have to play in a more concentrated way because in person the slash pickups are alot less forgiving then the 57s. The slash set are alot more touch sensitive and have less lower mids and more upper mids then the 57s . The 57s with their warmer more hollow squishy attack allow you to play in a more relaxed way where the slash set requires more accurate playing concentrated way which can result in a stiffer performance the slash set are stiffer and more percussive. They also behave like a cross between a P90 and a mid 60s Gibson Patent sticker pickup but with more aggression . The attack of the slash set is very immediate like an Alinico 5 P90 and there is also a p90 like percussive twang to them but then that immediate A5 like attack blooms into am A2 humbucker sustain.. The thing to remember is that the Slash set was originally designed to give slash the AFD tone on his modern live set up . They weed designed with his signal chain in mind but also designed around his playing style so in the hands of others with different paying styles and different Rigs they my not be the best pickups to accomplish slash tone but I am willing to bet if you had slash compare 57 classics to his signature pickups using his live rig and his paying style the seymour Duncan's would sound closer In general Duncan pickups don't color the tone as much as gibson pickups. Both companies make great pickups but the are different animals Duncan's are less thick less warm and tend to be more open and more clear and also more touch sensitive and tend to let more of the guitars natural sound come through and if the guitar itself is just an average sounding guitar or a neutral sounding guitar then the Duncan's can sound plain and bland but yet super clear. Duncan's are designed to be more neutral sounding because they have to work a wide variety of guitars for a wide variety of players or players using alot of effects which again why Duncan's can often sound super clear and touch sensitive but also kind of plain in some guitars Gibson pickups have more grunt and growl and tend to have more Bass and more lower mids where Duncan's have more focus on the upper mids and treble. Gibson are fatter warmer more full bodied . They are wilder raunchier and a slightly less refined and because of these qualities they have more color to the tone and more personality and because of this some clarity is sacrificed . Gibson pickups are designed to sound familiar as soon as you hear them. Gibson is not producing pickups with a focus on the aftermarket. They do have aftermarket pickups but this is not a priority and I have always thought their aftermarket pickups were more about marketing towards the epiphome player or players of Gibson copies. When they produce pickups they are not trying to produce pickups that will work in a wide variety of different guitars or pickups that will appeal to a wide variety of players . They are a guitar builder first and foremost and their goal is to produce pickups that work in their guitars and will appeal to the customer who wants to instantly hear that Gibson classic humbucker tone as soon as they plug in a gibsom guitar and to produce pickups that replicate the sound of certain eras . Most people associate the classic gibosn sound with somewhat darker fat warm cream tones but also with alot of bite and with a quite raw sound so gibsom produces pups that deliver that sound instantly despite the fact that vintage gibosn pickups were actually alot brighter more clear and twangy with P90 like qualities or telecaster single coil pickups on steroids with those darker warmer fatter more raw tones coming from pickups that were actually brighter and more refined then you would think . Those classic fat warm yet growing raw and biting tones were the result of the amplifiers of the day and specific settings on those amps as well as tweaking the tone and volume pots on guitars wired 50s style With the volume and tone controls on the guitar set to 10 ten those old Gibson PAFs and patent number pups and T top pups very often were much brighter and had alot more bite than you would imagine. They tone and volume pits were often rolled back to get that fat smooth dark sound . Today Gibson is producing pickups to instantly give you that classic gibsom tone without having to do all that tweaking and knob twisting where as the old Gibson pups made you work harder for that tone which is why is suspect so many people claim that modern gibosn Paf clones are very different from the original and why they claim aftermarket winders including Seymour duncan are making more accurate reproductions .

Well YES and NO. I've been using my Classic 57 as well. But once I installed this new Slash 2.0, rather than APN-2, a few months ago, I got the real GNR sounding what I hear in GNR album. What I was lacking on my 57s (less of the GAIN), the Slash 2.0 got it. It's got a lot bass on the top and stronger on the Treble and more GAIN on both bridge & neck than my 57s. In the last 5 months, I would prefer playing my Slash 2.0. My 57s have been hanging on my wall.😅

@Greg Walker So what's the point of listening to any pickup demo ever then? Your guitar is never going to be identical to the demo guitar, even if its from the same factory & built at the same time by the same builder, so by your logic this renders any demo moot. Pickups are designed wound with output levels & EQ charecteristics amongst other things in mind, So if I go to some Dimarzio/Seymour Duncan (for example) pickup demonstrations to choose whether I want a JB/59/fred/Bluesbucker those pickups are wound & designed to such a high tolerance to give a specific performance I'm pretty much going to make an informed decision. Now of course theres going to be subtle differences in tone from the demo instrument to mine, probably more importantly the actual room, mirophone & most of all in actual player's difference in performance technique do they dig in have a light touch etc But to infer buying pickups is a shot in the dark is asinine. By your & OP's logic the only way to differentiate pickups is to buy them all install each in your chosen guitar remember the subtleties between them all after auditioning them (which will be a feat in itself as side by side is impossible) & then choose. Same guitar same player same amp same OD pedal etc Or you can do what the uploader here has done two sets of pickups, two extremely similar guiars ie 2 LP's mahogany/maple body, mahogany rosewood neck, same scale length, same TOM type bridge etc, more than good enough. Yeah he had a point, but it was a silly pedantic one considering all the other variables & consistency within pickup of the same make & model and differences between those of different makes & models.

If it was a Strat vs a Les Paul even with the same pickups you could say that eg:- Different scale lengths, pickup placements, woods etc... Yeah your comment would be a lot more valid.. Please don't take my different opinion on this subject as me arguing … I watched this vid because I have a 2012 Trad LP and my lead guitarist has an 05 Faded LP with the same pickups 57 Classics(that would be hard to pick the difference with in a blind test), and he has purchased a Slash set.
