Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Randy Rhoads and a personal favorite John Sykes. These legends informed me on what a Les Paul should sound like. Great.

Okay, I own this guitar ... the VOS Serial #079. This guitar has light strings but this is great for a vintage type bluesy sound. The guitar comes equipped with a Bumblebee capacitor and is wired in a vintage manner. The volume and the tone knobs blend well but NOT like a modern era guitar. I am not sure if it is the pots or the capacitor being a Bumblebee but I assume this is how they were back in the day. The guitar sounds best for blues with combinations of the bridge and neck "to taste". The guitar tone is just amazing, this guitar will sustain until next week. I am beyond happy with it and it does come with .08 -.40 so it isn't your normal set of .08-.38 the G string is a .12 lol. Okay the string gauge is e to E .08, .10, .12, .20w, .30w, .40w

I had a moment when this really reached up and grabbed me by the boo-boo. I did a blindfold challenge kind of thing and chose a $300 Squier over a $1700 Fender USA based solely on feel, sound and balance. When I took off the blindfold, I was God smacked. The Captains advice was prescient.

I like that assessment because I have 50 guitars in the collection and most have 9-42 for strings but some I've left with the hybrid Gibson setup 9-46 because for that guitar and the personality it has it feels right. This Gibbons Les Paul is the first guitar I acquire that has 8s on it. Guitars are funny creatures indeed. Nice job on the video, glad to see you two being pleasantly surprised.

Couple of points; the missing toggle switch - on the guitar this is based on, the rhythm pup wouldn't be connected. While BFG does use drop tunings in the studio, those are almost certainly done on "heavier" strings. Live everything is E standard barring one song which is open E and that guitar is also setup with a "heavier" gauge.

I definitely agree with that last statement - for a while I was like "16 lbs of tension across the board" - then I went on vacation, couldn't bring my guitars, and when I came back, the ones with higher tension felt so much better than the low tension ones. Not going to lie though, I do sort of want to get a set of Ernie Ball Extra Slinkies to try them out - certainly seems like it'll be interesting.

I use to play 8 gauge on my two Yngwie strats that were my main guitars for a while in the 90's. Now I started out a Blues kid playing Hendrix, Clapton, Vaughan and you name it. Then got into technical playing Gilbert, Watch, Via, Yngwie, etc. When I had my Yngwie strats I was in a rock blues power trio (Hendrix meets Steve Morse band) and everyone was shocked I played with 8's but with Yngwie strats which have the scalloped fretboards, you can't use heavy guage strings because you will kill the frets real quick. And to what he said about everyone's dad who makes that SRV comment about you need 13's for tone like SRV is so true.

That sounded great guys. Been thinking of dropping a Pearly gates into one of my Les Paul's for a while. This might have convinced me. As for strings, i started on 9's, went up to 10's then 11's then briefly 12's. I then realised that the 12's were destroying my fingers and doing nothing for my playing so i drifted back down to 10's eventually. I tried to go back to 9's once but just couldn't deal with the lack of tension.

I've got a set of sd pearly gates. Put them in my paul and found them way to bright and harsh. Popped em in my sg and it was way better. Switched to 300k pots and paper in oil caps, best sounding sg I've ever heard (short of vintage ones) definitely still sounds like gibbons but smoother and more versatile. Neck pickup sounds incredible, warm and clear clean and similar to slash's tone with drive

Wanted to try the billy gibbons signature strings for a while now and finally got some after watching this.....I decided to go the whole hog and drop right down to a set of 7-38 from my usual 10-46....I absolutely love them! They are like playing on spider webs, bends and vibrato are completely effortless and I can honestly say my tone hasn't really been affected too much...a little thinner perhaps but nothing that can't be corrected with a bit of tweaking. As for the Reverends les paul...nah...don't like it....don't like the pin striping and if I'm paying for a les paul then I want all the knobs thank you very much....might try a set of pearly gates though.

Sorry this is late, but a question for you. On my Les Paul, I went from 10's to 9's. Love the feel of 9's over 10's. But on the treble strings, I have noticed an annoying fret-out when bending, or even picking hard. This is on a guitar that just had a fret level and crown. I have tried to set it up like crazy- but the only way to remedy it is to have the action super high, and/or the neck dead flat. Would you have any suggestions?
@Barrygee
9 жыл бұрын
I imagine your question was directed at andertons but I'll give you my answer anyway....I presume you've been trying to set the neck with the truss rod because you mention setting the neck dead flat....I wonder if your neck is warped or twisted....if it's just had fret levelling done then I can only assume that there must be some fairly large amount of twist. Is it possible that whoever did the fret job simply didn't do it properly? If the guitar tech or luthier didn't put a bow in the neck before levelling the frets then as soon as you have string tension the frets are no longer level and could choke out notes.....another possibility is to use a shim on the neck to alter the neck angle slightly but of course that can only be done on bolt on necks...if your les paul is a gibson then that's not an option for you...would also consider the nut as many set up issues can be traced back to the nut...maybe replace it and have it shaped and the nut slots cut to the correct depth....It could be the radius of the fret board...very curved radius fretboards tend to mean you bottom out on bends and choke the note which is why very large radii and compound radii are more popular. Frankly I would take it to a few different luthiers to see what they think....there are many reasons why you may be having this problem......it may just end up being a case of finding the exact right balance between action and relief in the neck...you may not be able to get it exactly perfect. It also all depends on what you call a high action...so many players these days think having an action of 0.5 mm is great and regard an action of 2mm as massive whereas I myself much prefer a 2mm action...a very low action on a low radius fretboard is more likely to fret out and choke the note whereas a higher action will give you more room on the bends and to me a higher action sounds nicer as well. Don't know if any of this was helpful but there you have it
@dmedicFF
9 жыл бұрын
Michael Barnes Hi thanks so much for your response. It is a Gibson Les Paul. There is no twist, no hump at the neck joint. The man who did the leveling is quite experienced, and he has done two guitars for me in the past with no issues. It needed the leveling- the frets were dented and worn and I was having intonation issues because of that. It may just be me and my style- I have to adjust my playing and touch to 9's. As an experiment, I put 10's back on the guitar, and it set up nicely with clean playing. I have never used super low action- I cant play guitars that are too low and I don't think they sound as good- mine is a bluesy kind of setup- medium action if you will. I am going to take it back to the guy and have him do a setup on it again.
@Barrygee
9 жыл бұрын
Do you re intonate your guitar when you change string gauges? Try dropping down to 9's then re intonating...maybe that will solve the issue since it appears to be directly related to the gauge of strings you're using.....either that or buy your strings separately so you can have any gauge you want on each string...the thin E doesn't have to be a 10 just because the fat E is a 46...you can have whatever sizes you like within reason...try mixing it up a bit..maybe you'll find a combination of string gauges you really like that also don't cause this fretting out issue....it could also simply be that because you're used to 10s and are now pushing down too hard on the strings....I think experimentation will solve this issue

SRV had been trying to get more distortion out of the amps he used 30 years ago by increasing the output of a single coil equipped fender strat. That's why he used so thick strings. Nowadays we can use a combination of distortion pedals/high gain amps/extra high gain pick ups to achieve this desired effect. Hence there's no actual need for heavy strings in normal tunings. We even have longer scale guitars to accommodate lower tunings without using thicker strings. At the end of the day it depends on the tension you want to feel on your fingers when bending the strings and/or when you need to play tight rhythm riffs.

Re. string guages: I work in a school and play a 3/4 size Yamaha acoustic (can't remember what guage strings, but probably 10s). I've tuned it up to G as it sounds better when the strings have the higher tension (or rather a tension that matches what I'm used to on my own full size acoustic. It probably makes more difference to "tone" on acoustics, but there you go, that's my two pennies worth.

To have that pinstripe for mardi gras or as a "carnaval" costume is nice, but imagine having to bear with it tainting the gold top forever... I would like to use 7's but I had a gibson one time and put (ernie ball slinkys) 12's on it and on a clean setting I got this tone I never heard before with thinner strings. I really liked it, it was really round sounding is how I can describe it. Eventually a string broke so I decided to try the cobalt slinkys which only had 11's at the time, and was immediately disappointed to hear that tone was gone, which I suspected it wasnt entirely the gauge but the cobalt string that had a brighter treblier sound which made it lose the round sound of the 12 gauge string, but i stuck with them then forgot and since sold the guitar, and would have loved to explore an even heavier gauge like 13's on them, just to see if i could get that tone again. Personally I would love to play easiest strings I could, but just seems natural to think that the more tension something has, the more it will release, like a bow and arrow, a more powerful release with higher tension. So in the right circumstances there might be a payoff to the extra work required playing higher gauge strings. Maybe with certain effects turned on that tone is masked away, but on a pure clean settings I have no doubts fatter strings give you fatter tone.
