@@MusicNomadCare Apologies. I neglected to mention that this guitar does not have a stop bar, but a trapeze system of strings support. This is a factory built guitar with no modifications. One thing I did not check to see is if the trapeze mechanism that holds the strings has a radius that corresponds to the neck. Like a stop bar might.

Thank you guys so much for doing this! Did my own setup now thanks to your tutorials, and for the first time in a while i'm enjoying my guitar again. I took my guitar to get setup at a shop and after a few days back at home it got some nasty buzzing in the middle. It's because i dont have central heat and ac so the rooms im not in at night (one of which has my guitar) has a wide temp change.. stays between 60-80 degrees daily. So i had to adjust the neck relief to reflect that. Doesn't sound buzzy anymore and I have a bridge height that I PREFER, not what the manufacturer or guitar tech puts there for you! I think everyone needs to learn how to setup their own guitars because your preferences come first and it's not easy for the guitar techs to decipher absolutely everything that you want in the short time that you're in their shop.

Now I hear this man say " if your saddle is turned the other way." and I have seen guys claim the heavy string saddles should angle towards the neck. 3 angled one way and 3 the other ? I only have 1 Les Paul and it is set up like the one in this video and from what I see on the Gibson channel show them like this guys. Do you have any saddles and bridges turned around on yours ? This just baffles and bugs me. Gotta know LOL

@@jerrypeevey I think this is what you are asking. My Gibson 60s came with an ABR-1 bridge (in studs) which means the screws are facing the headstock. The Nashville (wider bridge) has the screws facing the stop bar tail. If yours is an ABR it will say so on the underside. My low E and A strings the slope of the saddles face the headstock and the 4 higher strings (D, G, B, E) slopes are facing the tail piece. It came from factory this way. I hope this helps.

Hell yeah! I just followed this guide mostly step by step on my '95 Les Paul studio. I did not check the radius as I dont have the tool, nor did I do any nut work. As for everything else, I must say my Les Paul plays and sounds fantastic. One little thing I noticed was when checking for Neck relief at the 6th fret, even with the truss backed off ALL the way, I could only get a .005" feeler in there. Nevertheless as previously mentioned the guitar plays and sounds great! intonation is actually very solid, there was hardly any difference between the 12th fretted note and 17th fretted note on any of the strings. Oh and I should mention I strung the guitar with diaddrio 10-52 light top / heavy bottom strings for D standard tuning. Awesome guide. Cheers from Vancouver!

@MusicNomadCare

Soul, you are splitting hairs on 15th vs 12th and both can work. We realize there are different opinions and respect that but in our collaboration with Master Guitar Tech Geoff Luttrell and other top guitar techs, we developed 12th fret as the most common to fret across all guitar brands. Our Keep It Simple, Setup you don't change depending on the guitar brand but always will do the 1st and 12th for fretting during your truss rod adjustment. This is the main area you live in when playing and will make your play and sound great. Keep in mind even the factory settings from big Guitar brands are set way high and not what you really want and experienced guitar techs know that what brands say to do and how techs will setup guitars are way different and sound the best.

In the flow, string height comes before nut height. The measurements we have are based on using the pick capo at the first fret. Since the nut has not been addressed yet you would be using a height reference point that could be off. The first fret is a fixed height to adjust from.

This is a picky question but wouldn't it be more accurate to set the radius at the bridge with an under the string radius gauge. Because the strings are of different thicknesses, checking the radius at the top of the strings isn't the same as checking below the strings. Isn't it more important that the underside of the strings match the radius of the neck? Again, I know this is a hair-splitting question. I see an error in this video. You're checking intonation at the 12th and 19th frets, NOT the 12th and 17th frets. Not only can you see that you fretted the 19th fret but your tuner read D which it will on the 19th fret. If you fretted the 17th fret, you would see a "C" on your tuner. It might be a good idea to add some text at that part of the video to avoid confusion. Other than that, thanks for posting this. Very helpful. One other thing: You mentioned that all five strings may have to come down at the bridge. Maybe I'm thinking wrong but that doesn't seem possible. Think about it.
@MusicNomadCare
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Bob We realize and respect there are many different opinions when setting up your instrument and what type of radius gauge to use, in the KISS system we have a on top of the string radius gauge. You are correct he is checking at the 19th, we recommend to check intonation at the 12th & 17th but if you play high on the neck you can also check at the 19th fret, it is really a minor difference. If you need to come down on the inner 5 saddles on a fixed radius bridge you may need to sand the saddle down slightly to achieve proper radius.

@@MusicNomadCare not sure I follow you. Will is right. You guys have no idea what you're doing. StewMac sells a radius gauge that goes from underneath the strings. You guys should invest in those. I realize you're just trying to sell saddle files, but you're really just setting people up to ruin their bridges. I also realize that "everybody has their own opinion", but in this case, your opinion is wrong. You ALWAYS measure that radius from where the strings come into contact with the saddles, which is from underneath the strings, not on top of them. There is no other way to do it correctly. I trust Dan Erlewine more than I trust you. You guys literally do every measurement completely different than every other setup guide/instruction out there. And once again I realize you're using your own patented KISS method, but I'm gonna stick to methods that have been used for half a century.

I just bought a new gibson and my strings are hitting the back of the bridge, i did raise the stop but thought it was way to high so i put it back the way the factory sent it. Dont have any buzzing or anything. Wish you would of mentioned if its fine for the strings or not in the set up.

Shouldn’t you “ignore” the action when measuring nut height?
@MusicNomadCare
11 ай бұрын
Nut height is the last step in the playability part of the setup. The KISS setup method is based on following a linear flow. The steps for a fixed radius bridge would be- neck relief, radius and string action prior to addressing the nut slots. You can email tech@musicnomad.com if you have more questions.

Thanks for the video. Anyway, If I press between 1 fret and 12 fret, there's no way I can get some relief at 6 fret

It sound like your neck is flat with no relief. If you can’t get relief into the neck by loosening the truss rod it could be a couple things. You should email our in house guitar tech with your questions tech@musicnomad.com

These instruments are so expensive why are they not correctly set up in factories
@TeddyBullard
11 ай бұрын
They are set to factory specs. Changes In humidity, movement during shipping, temperature changes, and myriad other factors come into play. It's a given that the guitar is going to deviate from factory setup. It's also a given that guitar setup is a very personal, subjective thing; any guitarist worth their salt *always* sets up the guitar according to their playing style, skill level, etc. So, "factory setup" doesn't matter. It's just a baseline. And ime, worthless. Learn setup/maintenance yourself. Trust me.

@TeddyBullard Precisely... each piece of wood is unique. Plus I'd point out not every guitar is "expensive"... any guitar today under say $1000 is basically 'mass produced" and they don’t have 30+ minutes of time to spend/waste for someone tinkering with setup like this video just took. They are basically eyeballed by people that assemble them all day. Ballpark set up to say the least.

Each person may want they’re guitar set up differently are you asking the poor soul at gibsons factory to telekinetically read the mind of whoever eventually buys the guitar and set it up perfectly. It’s probably a lot better for the person to buys the guitar to set it up themself or bring it to a tech who can set up then hand to them and ask hey how does that feel.

Wood is a living material; changes in temperature and humidity change its geometry and because of this, the guitar often becomes out of tune or bends.

That would be the String Action part of the setup. On a the fixed bridge process the instructions of this action is on page 8-11

Before to start any setup VISUALLY check if the bridge is collapsed , after 8-10 years MOST of the PING WORKS stock bridge will bend. If bridge is collapsed but not dramatically you can fix it using a vice and 2 piece of wood.

I just want to be clear, so please help = when he measures the neck relief, he's talking in thousands and 6/1000's of an inch at the 6th fret while holding the string at the 12th is reasonable. Then when talking about ACTION at the 12th fret, he's talking 60 (six-zero) thousandths of an inch - which is also 6 hundredths of an inch, right? A capo at the first fret can't have different measurements at he 12th, right?

When adjusting the radius with a radius gauge, what would one be supposed to use with a compound radius?
@MusicNomadCare
Жыл бұрын
With your strings off, you will still measure the fretboard radius at the last fret. You will then match your string radius to the fretboard radius. For example if you have a 9.5" to 12" compound radius you will want to use the larger number which is the flattest part of the radius.
