Joe Walsh played an Epiphone Jared James Nichols model on a few songs and Tommy Thayer played his Epiphone Signature on a good 1/3rd of KISS's set. It made me smile very much seeing that. I agree with everything you say here. I own both the epiphone & gibson les paul 50s standards & whilst I have to admit that the gibson is on another level in terms of quality, I actually enjoy playing the epiphone so much more due to the fact that i get nervous playing the gibson because it is so delicate. All you have to do is look at it & a ding appears. It's been a dream of mine for so long to own a gibson les paul standard, but the reality is that my playing suffers when using it because I'm more concerned with not damaging it. So because of that reason, I've regrettably decided to sell it. I've thrown in a seymour duncan jb & jazz humbucker set into the epiphone & I have to say, it is absolutely stunning in both sound & playability & is a seriously genuine alternative to the gibson.

but did you have a regular epiphone les paul standard, or did you have this one specifically? because the one in the video comes from a production line that teamed up with the Gibson custom shop, hence its name being "inspired by Gibson", i mean i know there must be a difference, its still an epiphone, its cheaper than the Gibson, but these have been said to be a very game changer on the epiphone's line... i guess that long story short im just saying that its not really the same to compare a gibson to a "regular" epiphone, to compare a gibson to this epiphone line, or maybe you did have this one haha i was just wondering if the comparison was on point

When you buy a Fender Stratocaster whether it was Made in USA or Made in Mexico or Made in Japan, it will be then same guitar with the same logo, same headstock etc. No noticeable differences other than the initials on the serial number behind the headstock... That's it! People buy Stratocaster because it is a "Fender"... So every Stratocaster player around the world proudly say they are playing a "Fender Stratocaster" and not a "Xphone Stratocaster"... People would like to buy a Les Paul because it is a Gibson. Nobody buys a Les Paul because it says "Epiphone" on it! Last week I got myself a 60s Bourbon Burst Epiphone LP Standard... Why? Because it was cheap enough for me to try my first guitar with humbuckers after playing Fender brand for 48 years. So I said why not to try a guitar with humbuckers and I like LP styling. So far I love it and I saved $2600 by not buying the one with the Gibson logo on the headstock! BTW great video and very informative comparison...!

I haven't seen guitars this good from Gibson ever. I have a Murphy Lab '57 that I don't play out ever...and on a whim I went into a Guitar Center and played a 50's off the wall which I haven't done in a long time. I knew the new management needed some time to work to get things better so I thought I'd give Gibson one last shot to really deliver. I plugged in the 50's and that guitar was something great right off the rip. Once I got it home on my setup....and I do not say this lightly...this is the best PAF Gibson Les Paul I have ever heard and the actual setup and playing is essentially magical. Hanging in a Guitar Center of all places with a dried out fret board and nobody even noticing it was a straight up stage assassin. We bought it on the spot. Got it home and played it for my awesome wife. We just both looked at eachother in disbelief. Within a couple of hours we were both in front of the computer looking for another one with a different top...and we bought without hesitation. Really dig in to whats going on with the specs. If you know great guitars and what made them great...the Standard 50's hits nearly all of the checkboxes. They are heavier so if you are getting older without a footrest situation or you have chronic back issues or just play better for you with something really light...this isn't the guitar for you. But if you're of the mind that is tired of guitars so light that they feel like toys and are tired of having literally no options in the 9 lb to 12 lb range...this is a return to the guitars Gibson was known for making. Truly remarkable.

Another excellent show and this time it didn't cost me any money--I already have both of these guitars. Those little marks on the Gibson, even the ding, are probably repairable, especially if you're good at doing drop fills. The cracks in (both sides of) the Epiphone's neck at 20:20 suggest that it's had a fall, or been swung into something hard. Given that the poly finish is so much tougher than the Gibson's nitro, it must have been a hell of a knock. I always check this area when looking to buy a new guitar. Cracks here = instant reject. To see how many pieces the Epiphone's made from, would it be possible to look at the end grain around the body, or is there an opaque finish there? Regarding price differences: much of this must be down to labour costs, but in my experience, budget equipment always has inferior materials and components, and you get what you pay for. I chose a Squier CV 50s Strat over a Mexican one (didn't try a USA one that day) and while the CV is a fine playing guitar, the fretwire has turned out to be quite soft, and other components are just 'cheap'. With some aluminium foil shielding to reduce hum, it's still good enough to gig with, but I suspect a more expensive model would fare better. Maybe the Epiphone/Gibson comparison would throw up similar findings. Finally, the acid test for _any_ guitar, regardless of its price: with a clean tone, play the G string, twelfth fret, and see how long the note takes to decay. Play the same note on B/8 and D/15 and compare decays. G/12 will always be the shortest, but if it's noticeably short compared to the others, it can't be fixed and that guitar's a reject. It would be interesting to hear this comparison with both the Gibson and the Epiphone.

Just a note re the nitro finish - they add a UV-blocker to it so the finish won't fade over time like the original 'bursts did (unfortunately). It also contains higher levels of plasticiser too so the finish will remain softer compared to the lacquer they used to use. That original lacquer would harden like glass so it'd chip or fracture as it'd became brittle over time. I bought a tobacco burst Standard 50s a couple of years ago and can't fault it, though it does weigh a ton. Gibson quality control seems to have improved greatly in recent years.
@theguitaristas

Cheers man, I did wonder about the UV qualities thanks for that info. Do you think maybe they have still not got the formula quite right? :)
@bazitube390
3 жыл бұрын
@@theguitaristas They got the right formula but they just don't use it on standard models. If you look at well played custom shop models from early 2000s you can clearly see the fading. But the finish on standard model still checks and cracks like how nitro should be. there are plenty of nitro cracks on my 50s standard!
@hotblackdesiato3451
3 жыл бұрын
@@theguitaristas Hey dude, the current Standards have a thicker finish compared to the Custom Shop guitars. The nitro formula will have changed over the years as a result of two things - health & safety rules and money. Spraying nitro all day long is bad for your health so the formula probably had to change to make it safer to use for prolonged periods. Plus it's probably quicker to finish/buff a Standard range guitar that has more plasticiser in the finish than a Custom Shop which might use a purer nitro (time is money!). As for the 'fogging' that you see on your Standard's finish where your arm rests, that's possibly down to how acidic the oils in your skin are. If you want to see a real master at refinishing and aging Les Pauls, check out the 8Bomb Custom channel. The detail that he goes into is amazing.

I have a couple of Epis with custom pickups and they are lighter at 8lbs and great.I also have a Les Paul Traditional which has a beautiful sound and weighs 9.99 lbs. So it's the opposite weight-wise. In an ideal situation, I'd advise people to just save up and look around for the right Gibson because they sound magic from the off.

Yeah I agree. And with an Epi, if you ever want to sell it you're more or less stuck trading it in. With a Gibson, if you buy second hand, you can trade, buy, sell without ever losing money after the initial buy. It's just far more guitar, on every level and decently worth having if you play Les Pauls

Why did the Epiphone have a long neck tenon while the Gibson did not? It doesn't make any sense at all. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I purchased an Epiphone Les Paul this year and I was quite surprised by its quality! Great solid finish as you mentionned and it is by far the most stable in terms of tuning in my experience. I own a Tele, Godin, Schecter but the Epiphone LesPaul Standard keeps his tune better. Nice sound and thick neck, I love it!

I have an Epiphone Standard '50s and a 2017 Gibson Traditional T - the model that got rebranded as the Standard '50s. Love them both, but there's very, very little difference between them in sound or playability. In a blind test, I'd probably pick either of them about 50% of the time. The Epi is a LOT of bang for the buck and a truly great guitar.

Cheers Jason, yes agreed the Epi does seem to sound a bit fatter - instinctively I put that down to the more 'robust' tailpiece... that may be complete nonsense though so I may have to test that theory at some point! :)

I’ve usually always found that Epi’s tend to have less highs. Some say muddy, some say warm. There’s a lot of things that can contribute. Different fret wire, different bridge saddle materials. And such.

Big fan of the inspired by Gibson range but recently got a Gibson Les Paul 50s. For me, the difference in feel is night and day. My Gibson was really bright with the burstbuckers, so switched them for the Tonerider AC2 set for a smoother more vintage tone. The neck is great - not overly chunky at all, solid tuners and the finish is awesome. If you can, give a Gibson a go but… saying that, you really can’t go wrong with an Epiphone.

Great videos thanks so much for your efforts. I’ve bought the exact same Gibson as you review here and it’s a beautiful instrument. Several bits of the plastic including pickup rings had cracks in them like the screws had been over tightened. I had the option to send it back for exchange but I really bonded with it and liked the finished so opted for Gear4music to get replacement rings from Gibson. I patiently waited over 3 months for these but in current climate I understand the wait. Now the guitar is perfect. I replaced the output jack surround with a chrome one which to me made it more premium, but don’t plan any other upgrades. I’ve never spent so much on a guitar and hope to keep it as a forever guitar. I also own several Epiphone which are great value especially the new inspired by Gibson range. All of the screws for the truss rod covers on mine are wonky to so don’t suspect you did it in error on yours.

The Epi 50s have the Probucker 1&2 pickups, a galaxy ahead of the 2&3 set imo. Just swapped in alnico 4 magnets in a 2&3 set, have another set waiting for alnico 3's, to see if they'll lift out of that mush they can collapse into with drive and overdrive, and perhaps also pull back some of those forward low and high frequencies they've got just a bit. I really like the phase-y Burstbucker thing they've got, just not the smear. Fingers crossed!

That Gold Top!!!! It has a real Neil Young Cowgirl in the Sand kind of vibe to it. The Gibson sounds a bit clearer, and like it has a bit more headroom. I suspect that is mostly down to the pickups. If you put Seymour Duncan 58’s in the Epiphone, you would have a total rock machine. Great playing as well. I’d love to jam out sometime.

Amazing video!! Both sound great, the Epiphone impressed me!! Marginal difference in sound… As you said, the smart money is on the Epiphone. If you want to improve the sound on the Epi, you could install a set of SD pickups, which are around 300… you could change tunners, nut, capacitors… you will pay around 900 in total, and you will have an amazing guitar!!

That Gibson Les Paul Standard is definitely a fantastic guitar. But the gold top Epiphone is "NICE!" 🤣 I have a set of covered Probuckers stuck away in a closet and I intend on purchasing a gold top Epi Classic Worn and sticking them in it. It should just be a plug & play type endeavor. I also have a set of Grover locking tuners (kidney) and a set of Hipshot open gear locking tuners (tulip) to choose from for an upgrade. Would love to see a comparison between the Epi Standard gold top and the Epi Classic Worn gold top. Just to see if I can build my own satin gold top standard on the cheap. I think it'll be good 👍. You all know how it is. Us tinkerers have got to tinker!

My Epi goldtop like yours, rings like a bell acoustically or plugged in and the body really resonates very well and even when you pluck a single string. It's not a Gibson but it's still good regardless. At any live gig it sounds good and people in the audience don't know or care what brand it is as long as you play good and sound good and if you play loud rock and roll or punk then it's royal!!😊

I wonder if nitrocellulose was cheaper than poly we’d all believe the latter was a “better” sound? I’ve owned two guitars with nitro finishes. The Fender Tele 52 Reissue had a neck that hadn’t cured properly and it was an annoying issue when playing. The Gibson Firebird was from about 1980 and I didn’t even know about nitro finishes while I had it! Perhaps it would have sounded better if I had? Interestingly the Firebird was a sunburst that would come up a horrible colour under some blue stage lights. Both are long gone, like my youth and my naivety.

Another thing, nobody will care I'm sure, Mr. Les Paul himself did a lot of his work and tinkering on his own guitars at the Epiphone factory, which was in New York USA I believe at the time. Knowing this, in my mind, I feel the Epiphone is an even better suited guitar to have Les Paul's name on the headstock. After all, Les Paul guitar is one of the most unrecognized signature guitars simply because most people don't know Les Paul was an actual person. I'm waffling on... Thanks for the video!

The binding on my wine red Gibson LP Traditional has turned a dark orange over the years. Looks great. I got a Chibson LP $200 free shipping. Flawless paint, nice frets, plays perfect. Similar layout to the Epey you have-truss rod and neck angle the same smaller pots. Same factory in China?

If i was spending my money, it would be the Epi all day long, which i have done when i bought a epi les paul standard pro plus top, which i love, bought secondhand for £200 totally unmarked. One thing i will say is i love the look of that top on the Gibson, which on most modern gibsons i don't, the burst seems to be blended in which i like, on a lot i have seen they are almost two different clours with no blending which i can't stand, so you have a good one there. PS, would love to see a show on you the presenter, where you from, what you play, so on and so on, your playing is fantastic, very tasteful.

Rubber and foam rubber will mark ALL nitrocellulose finishes. That's why reputable sellers of guitar stands will warn you against using certain stands with rubber pads for nitro-finished guitars. See foe example Thomann. I certainly f***ed up the back of my Gibson LP Doublecut. Glad I sold that thing and replaced it with an Epiphone Gold Top 56 with P90s.

Honduran mahogany is the gold tone standard by which all mahogany is judged.. This mahogany is used for Gibson Les Pauls..Due to restrictions Honduran mahogany can only be used from trees that have already fallen. The "replacement" for Honduran mahogany is West African mahogany,which is what some high end guitar makers use. Its been criticized-- -because it is NOT Honduran mahogany ( my opinion guitar players have bought into the argument that only the Honduran varieties can produce that "magical" tone). I have guitars made with West African mahogany and they sound great. The Honduras climate of high heat and high humidity is a factor into the tone,yet its hot and humid in West Africa so that argument is nonsense when comparing the two. The lightest mahogany sounds the best be it Honduran or West African. Great comparison video. 🎸👍

I bought an Epiphone standard the exact finish on the Gibson you have.. about 18 years ago.. think I payed £450 for it.. back when a Les Paul was about £900! I think. Over them years.. I've got to compare it against other guitars.. and it's only the past year it's made me realise what an absolute perfect instrument it is.. Ive played against Gibson's.. and I just can't swap it out.. Also.. I left it in a bag for 10 years untouched round my brother's.. he brought it round the other year.. I cleaned and straightened, intonation etc.. and it was perfect again. They hold their tune so well also.. once they get used to the rooms atmosphere.. literally pick up and play.. check tune.. oh it's in tune.. crazy.

Late to the party on this video but just picked up an 'Inspired by Gibson' Epiphone 50's Gold Top LP Standard and was looking for in depth under the hood reviews ... yours is a great one. I do have a question ... You were quick to identify the Gibson had 50's era wiring but then said the Epiphone looked different ... The Epi blurb on wiring says its 50's so shouldn't they be the same ... is there a definitive version of 50's pot wiring ?

I’m a bit late to this but I thought I’d add this incase anyone is wondering. The marks appearing on the Gibson is mostly referred to as Milking I believe, it’s what we used to call it anyway. It is very common in that area under your arm when you play. Mine did the same when it was new and eventually came out by itself. Personally I kinda like it but there is a specific polish you can get for it, pmt sell it. I would say it will fetch out the mark on the back from the stand too. Thanks.

I am by no means a professional guitarist but in my limited experience, Gibson has way more mystique and I think that affects opinions. Epiphone makes very good quality guitars as does Gibson. For me, the differences do not justify the price discrepancy. However, regarding value, one would have to include the resale value and obviously, that would entirely in Gibson's favor. However, if you buy a guitar to play it or to collect or resell them is what decides the value to you. What it may be worth in resale only matters if you intend to sell it.
