Great to see this again. It has been over 30 years. I am 61+ and I started Judo and then Shotokan Karate when I was 13 at the YMCA, way back when people made fun of any of the Arts, now it's every where you look BUT not the Do/the way, it's about the dollar

Totally agree. What amazes me is that this video has only 18,199 views. Thats shows me just how many of the millions out there that practice have no desire to learn our history of this great sport.

I don't think it is a genuine lack of interest, but more of a blind trust in the master you got in front of you. Many people don't even know that there are several styles of karaté!

Born 1868 , passed 1957, he would have been about 56 when this was filmed. Funakoshi's karate linnage goes back to the days of Sokan Matsumura. Okinawa is a very small place, so everyone knew everyone else. There were marriages between the famalies and sometimes family squabbles. There's famous story surrounding Funakoshi's visit in 1922 sports exhibition. Motobu, who was a bit of trouble maker but who could also be charming, made a comment about Karate being superior to what he was seeing in the exhibition. The story goes that a judo ka challanged Funakoshi and that Funakoshi put him down with one punch. That it wasn't done to hurt, or with malice was likely the beginning of Funakoshi's friendship with Kano.

None of this is 1924. Maybe 1934. Yoshitaka Funakoshi was not teaching until 1932--in 1924 he was 14 years old and in Okinawa. Nakayama Sensei can be seen in one or two scenes and he started training in 1931. Otsuka Sensei does not appear which suggests he has already formed Wadoryu which would make this 1935. Kimura Sensei is performing Nijushiho in a form not adopted until at least 1934. The stances --especially the back stances in Jion, jitte and Enpi suggest a time around the publication karate do Kyohan. in 1935 or 36. Reply ·

Also, Meikyo, Nijushiho, and Bassai Sho are shown in this. And I think Waka Sensei (Gigo) learned/adapted those kata from Mabuni a bit later. It is interesting that yoko geri keage are in the kata but that manji uke is still being done from a gyaku zenkutsu dachi. These films are really time capsules even if (all|most) of them are from later than 1924.

I don't know about the footage but you know lot of wrong things about o sensei Gichin Funakoshi. Read at least the Wikipedia about him! He was born in 1868 and went in heaven in 1957. In 1911 - 1912 the Shotokan style was already in place since several demonstrations were done for the Imperial Japanese army. In 1921 he performed even in front of the Emperor! So the 1924 footage is really possible.

@@danielbodea5199 Nobody has ever suggested that the Shotokan style was in place in 1911. Gigo was one year old. Do you know anything about his influence on Master Funakoshi's teachings between 1934 and his death in 1945? Compare the first book Rentan Goshin Ryukyu Kenpo: Karate with the last edition of Karate Do Kyohan. Also if you spend fifty years in Shotokan Karate, live through the breakup of the JKA, the formation of the Kanazawa group, spend countless hours with Nakayama Sensei and his students, and a few other things, you might find that you know a little more than a Wikipedia article. Also in Shotokan we never call Master Funakoshi O Sensei--never.

@@ckhthdMy bad! I misread that the age of Gichin was 14 at the time of 1924! Apologies! Now, since I'm not a Shotokan person I may call Gichin Funakoshi with the apelativ of O-Sensei. Is just a matter of huge admiration! You understand a lot form Shotokan and its history (for sure much more than myself!) but even me I was able to observe (mostly from outside) this fighting style and better understand this huge creation and he geniality of its creator. From my point of view, Gichin Funakoshi if wasn't a god was very close to them (along Morihei Ueshiba, Jigoro Kano and maybe Chojun Miyagi). I don't really know the masters you speak about but I guess they were contestants of JKA style which even me I noticed since long time ago that is far, far away form what initial style (which I'd be really interested to study, even now in my 50s). Take care!

As the video said "Shokan" was a name made up by a school to distinguish themselves from other styles coming into mainland. It is still Okinawan born and bred through and through. As with everything things evolve, but the basics still for the most part have not.

Gordon Cooper some kata use muscle tension as part of the training. Sanchin is probably the most eell known, and in some schools is frequently practiced bare chested so the instructors can make sure the student is using the correct muscle movements

Choki Motobu thought that Funakoshi and his garden karate were a bunch of nonsense! I now understand why! When he heard that Funakoshi had been awarded a 5th dan, he reportedly said something to the effect of, "well I guess that makes me a 10th dan!" I'm sure Funakoshi was a fine martial artist, but this is nonsense what the students are doing in the video. This is not true karate! This is artistic and spiritual nonsense! A bunch of 'sukiyaki' to quote Sonny Chiba!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but studies show that most cases of homophobia stem from a deeply repressed homosexual desire. This would fit in with your dislike of education, because studies *also* show that educated people are more tolerant, which would, in turn, force you to accept your homosexual urges. Granted, I know almost nothing about you, but I would highly recommend some therapy and/or higher education. I mean really, why hate people?

Not 1924 at all. Karate-do in this footage is written as "way of empty hand (空手道)" which was changed from Chinese hand (唐手) in 1929. Gichin's stances are not how he showed in first 2 books published in 1922 or 1925, which also suggests that this footage is after those books were published. Furthermore, this footage shows "Keio Gijuku Karate Study Group (慶応義塾空手研究会) @ 12:39", which was established in February 1932, but later renamed as "Physical Education Association Karate Club (体育会空手部) @ 8:14 and 10:42" on October 15th,1932. Therefore, this footage was made after 1929. It's a great video footage nonetheless.

The ties between late Kung Fu (before the purges/displacements) and early Karate (before the simplifications/standardizations into specific lineages such as Shotokan, UechiRyu, Kyokushin) are clearly visible here. The bridge between styles is a unique combination of Shorinji-Kempo (i.e. Shaolin Kung Fu as referred to by the Japanese) and the primitive local Okinawan hand-to-hand combat styles. I really appreciate gems like these and Mifune's Essence of Judo to help me put the pieces together.

Why isn't Master Funakoshi dressed in such a manner? Is he immature? And as for my 'maturity', I would MUCH rather be childish, sheepish, and immature than a homosexual!
