tempo is perfect. What a magnificent organ, it will never have an equal. I know many complain about it, but I really like the sound of the action in this recording, it just adds a lot as you can hear the organ working.

Thank you for your post!!! Not only is this piece wonderful ("a nice toccata") and your playing is over the top awesome, I love hearing the mechanical workings of this organ. I also love hearing the organ wake up after tweaks made by Mr. Roth.
Well done Alana - coping with the action and Daniel too. What a marvellous experience!

Bravo Alana! Sjajno si odsvirala E.Gigout - Toccata! Imati velikog učitelja i orguljaša Rotha samo jedan sat na ovim orguljama velika je čast i najupečatljivija instrukcija iz orgulja...koja se pamti zauvijek.

Hi Alana, Well done. I am also study now on this beautiful piece. It is not easy and take many hours to get it in your fingers. Three years I was also in the St Sulpice. Most beautiful organ of Paris and Daniel Roth very nice and amaible man.
Daniel Roth should not sing during the recording. He is a fine organist....

It's what good organists sometimes do behind their own organ, high up there in the church. Foam around the lips, humming, grunting, it all happens. A little singing/humming is very mild.

I really like the tempo, I feel like a lot of organists play it too quickly.
Excellent tempo! This is musique royale (not to be confused with Mickey Mouse)! There is a "recording" of Gigout himself on a Welte-Organ in the stairwell of the Britannic (Sister-Ship of Titanic). He plays much quicker, but in my opinion adapted to the small room.

I believe the action of this organ pretty much forces you into that tempo. Not to say this works very well in the church.

I wonder whether it even could be played quicker, given the action of this organ? I certainly couldn't! It isn't an easy piece anyway, at least not for an amateur like me. 🙂

The negative comments are amusing. The man commenting, singing, page turning and adjusting the stops is the Titulaire, Daniel Roth. Without his invitation, Alana would never be allowed to play this wonderful Cavaille-Coll. I'm sure Alana was honored to be talked to and sung to by one of the great organists and pedagogues in the world.

@@ABCTraveler-ol5oj I'm convinced you totally missed the humor and sarcasm in my post, even when I highlighted some words in italic to dram attention on them : _old lady_ ? > no it's a young lady on this video. _saxophone_ or _guitar_ ? no it's an organ. _his daddy_ ? no this man is Daniel Roth, one of top organists in France, titular of that magnificent Saint-Sulpice organ. Absolutely magnificent. I am not usually one for French organs or their music, however this is such an incredibly balanced piece and miraculous instrument to hear it from. Nice to see the exuberance of a student mastering a piece like that. Sometimes in recitals the performer becomes so perfect at the piece that he or she loses that sense of almost being overwhelmed by it, which I dislike. You can almost see how her breath is taken away by the finale..very special!
I LOVED this!!! I've seen a couple of videos done by visiting organists.... He seems like the nicest guy and it looks like you enjoyed the experience thoroughly! Nicely played. I'm so jealous!
Hi Alana, a really good job...!!! :-) I think it's not easy to play the toccata...but with Daniel Roth on your side it's an enormous act of concentration, I believe...! I like listening to your interpretation most of all others here on KZitem! Thanx very much for posting!!!
She did well with Daniel Roth on her right, but to me he comes across as a good host and teacher, glad to see new organists. The first time I saw one of these videos, I thought, “How can the organist stand having people hovering on either side?” But of you watch Mr. Roth playing, he was a flanked with people changing registrations, turning pages, or just watching. Let’s hope they all have good breath and contained farts, lol!

Then to hear David Roth, the current renowned organist and improviser of Saint Sulpice provide a little history lesson of where Gigout served as an organist in the same city, What a sublime moment.

Under the circumstances - noise, singing, stop changing, ventals, pistons, controlling the beast and nerves and concentration..... very very well done. Im sure you wanted to do the whole thing over again so you could relax and actually enjoy listening what you were playing. You are so busy concentrating that the fantastic moment of enjoying playing passes you by, but thanks for posting this very live and exciting and real video.
Very well done. The playing of this piece was done to a spectacular pace. Most people "hot rod" this piece and just want to be done with it. In comparison to your playing vs hearing this played other times at the colleges I've been at. Performers always over-use mixtures early on this piece, making the piece sound very "thin" Which is unpleasant. The fact that you pulled slightly back at the 2:40 mark to allow pace of a person's ears was very well done. I studied the St. Anthony for organ on the Coast and people ALWAYS "hot rod" that piece as well. I know that from playing, If a person plays loud, they play faster. Infront of audiences, one wants to rush it. I did hear some "tracker lurching" but that just comes with practice. I played a tracker organ that had a very heavy action, and that really gets a person on timing. But handling that action on that organ. heh. im sure it was ultra heavy.
@@Diana-gv1lb Sorry this one is much better. It has to do with the registration and timing. I listened to what you linked and it sounds like there is no "expression". into reeds or mixtures. I would have started out with more than just some wood flutes and capped metal stops. It NEEDS "meat" this is a Toccata.

Have not played outside of the United States but enjoyed organs on both coasts and studied at the Department of Music at Stanford with the university organist Herb Nanney until a variety of computer science professors at the Artificial Intelligence Center at Stanford Research Institute stole me away forever. I was practicing this piece and Widor's 5th Symphony Toccata when it happen. IF I ever get financial wealth, I plan to get another Allen organ (I had a large one years ago) and resume practice where I left off. Also JSB's Toccata in F Major was another I was studying. It's a shame that work and $$ pull one away from the basics which give the maximum joy, eh?

I would love to play this organ. But I contacted Daniel Roth and he never responded. But if I do get enough money to travel to Paris, I wonder how far do I need to let Daniel know about playing this organ? Plus I noticed that getting to it is quite a challenge since you have to walk up a long spiral staircase and out onto a catwalk overlooking the nave. For me, it would cost me about a few thousand Euros to travel to Paris. I would love to teach Daniel Roth a piece that I wrote for organ. But maybe some of you that knows him to please get him to respond to you. Tell him that I would like to meet him and teach him my composition "Invention in F Major".
