I first saw Gil in 1972 0n Long Island ,NY at a club called My Father's Place...great show, even brought Gil a drink and he said "thanks youngblood". Made my night.....fast foward to 2002.... Gil incarserated in Queensboro Correctional facility, where I worked as a corrections officer. Many nights of good, real conversation which I will not reveal. 2003, breakout concert at SOB's in Manhattan,NY. a good show. I remember thinking " Gil's back". Such a heavy, bueatiful, smart and kind brother!! Next news....Gil Scot-Heron passed away.....a very, very sad day.....R.I.P.....Gil's music and poems have been with me from a young man to present, a senior citizen.

Hey, Brotha, thank you, for telling your story of Gil Scott Heron. I would have given anything to have met him. This man was so phenomenally brilliant, intelligent, compassionate, and a great musical artist and songwriter. I loved him. Every time I listen to Winter in America I start to cry because I realize not much has changed within his gifted insight. songs. But, I'm always hopeful. God bless you. Shalom from Gidget

During grad school I was fortunate to have partied with Brother Gil and his band after a performance in Ft Collins, Colorado 1979 or 1980. By the way, Colorado State University's library there had both of his early novels in their holdings: The Vulture, a murder mystery whose central themes include the devastating effects of drugs on urban black life, in 1968 at age 19. Four years later, Scott-Heron published his second novel, The Nigger Factory (1972), which, set on the campus of a historically black college (HBCU), focused on the conflicting ideology between the more traditionally Eurocentric-trained administrators.

Just finished reading Gil Scott-Heron's memoir "The Last Holiday." This is a must read if you really want to know the man Gil. This was one brilliant brother! But you be the judge for yourself. Buy the book and you will have trouble putting it down. I loved his music and his views, but learning how they came to be was most interesting. We lost a brilliant, black mind when he passed away. Peace go with you brother.

Miss you Gill you made people think! find all feelings in your songs,I noticed here on the net that every thing of the African diaspora, eevery body viewing from slavery, Gullah and Geechee, anything dealing with Africa, hand clapping games, music and dance culture from top to bottom. Shit think everyone would be happy by now after all the African people gave the world! I guess envy and hatred over ruled undeveloped minds.
