That's what happens when you hire 60 Hells Angels to play security guards of 300,000 hippies. Wrong combination of tribes! The hippies were there for peace and love while the "Angels" were so drunk they kicked everybody's ass.

What i wanna know is who had the bright idea to hire the hell's angels? What was the manson family busy?

This wasn't the only concert where bikers were hired to be the security. It happened at a least a few different concerts before the "bright" idea was abandoned for rather obvious reasons. Not sure why, but maybe they thought it'd be "hip" idea to hire some bikers rather traditional uniformed security guards and to pay them within beer instead of money (not sure if that was the case at Altamont).

@itiswhatitaint anditaintwhatitis: "What i wanna know is who had the bright idea to hire the hell's angels?" AFAIK, it was suggested by Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick and Paul Kantner who'd already used them for several of their concerts previously without indecent or any trouble or problems whatsoever. "What was the manson family busy?" I think they were busy listening to The Beatles' "White Album" around that time, heh, just kidding hehehe

Interestingly, I believe Charles Manson and his followers were arrested the same week as the concert. It really was the weekend the sixties died.

let's stop & look at this critically for a moment. if one murder occurs in an average american city of 300,000 people, most people wouldn't take that to mean that america's democratic experiment is a failure. so if one murder occurs at a rock concert with 300,000 in attendance, why would anyone take that to mean that the counterculture was a failure? we've got to apply the same standard.

don't forget they man they killed was pointed a gun.. and of course the crowd kept storming the stage because the stage was SHORT (which was why they had the hells angels in the 1st place)... and it was short because the location of the festival was changed and the stage had to be built fast

Despite Brian Jones death, the Stones were in the top at that time. The Jimi Hendrix Experience , Janis Joplin The Doors, Led Zeppelin beginning, the Beatles (regardless almost splitting). The late 60’s was the greatest time to Rock’n’Roll.

Okay, here's the inside story. That the Stones were playing, was to be kept a secret. The concert was supposed to have been held in Golden Gate Park. The Stones, wanted the crowd size to top Woodstock, which was held right before this. So, according to story, they leaked that they would be playing. San Francisco officials were furious, and canceled the Golden Gate Park concert. So, AT THE VERY LAST SECOND, the Stones picked Altamont Speedway. However, it was no way prepared at all, hence the totally inadequate stage, and the mind blowing decision to hire the Hell's Angel's for security, except nobody hired anyone to protect the people from the Hell's Angels.

@John G. Hill : "the mind blowing decision to hire the Hell's Angel's for security," Maybe not so mind-blowing, as that was suggested (albeit perhaps on the fly) by Jefferson Airplane whom had already used the Hell's Angels as security several times previously for their concerts. "except nobody hired anyone to protect the people from the Hell's Angels." Well do everyone else and yourself a big favor and don't bring a firearm to a (free) Rock concert. In fact, especially since the concert was outdoors, why don't you quit yer bitchin' and bring a good big bag of grass instead, eh. Gosh golly gee, what a radically ingenious idea on my behalf! kzitem.info/news/bejne/lI6n33ulfmSCZ44

@MrAzdaz The rolling stones are the ones who hired the Hells Angels because there is an organization in London called the Hells Angels. What the rolling stones didn't realize is that the Hells Angels in America had no relation to the Hells Angels in London. In London the Hells Angels where a peace organization as opposed to the U.S.'s Hells Angels. The Rolling Stones released a formal apology for the misunderstanding and the tragedies that occurred at the concert.
