I'm sorry, I've been digging Gensing for 50 years, and you are destroying a lot of the plants, many Gensing buyers, won't buy it broken like that, so let me give a bit of free advice... throw that ladies garden tool in the nearest trashcan, get either a long thick straight-edge screwdriver, or a short shovel, here's a big tip, start a circle, around the plant, about a foot from the stalk, go straight down, about 6 to 8 inches deep, with the tool you're using, pry up, then take your hands and start breaking up the dirt...very carefully, a lot of dealers, love those long spidery tendrils, still attached... besides...the more of the plant you get... the more weight...and they pay by the weight...so get every little stringer. Now, as to North, South, or East and West sides of the hill is best for Gensing??? ANY side of the hill works, deers often step on it and it will get stuck in their hooves...only to be deposited somewhere else along their trail, I've often walked deer paths and found a lot of sang, I find the best way is to... find a holler, follow a creek uphill, stay to one side, if it's there, eventually you'll find a plant, and 90% of the time... there's more uphill, zigzag your way all back and forth on the hill you find some, keep the distance between the zigging and zagging, to about six to eight feet, so you won't miss any, start at the bottom of the hill, and as you go up...the plants will be bigger as you go uphill. NEVER!!!! Go into the woods without having some Off, turkey ticks will drive you crazy, besides the rest of the pests awoods. Always take plenty of water, if you get lost, follow a creek, they lead to a place where a bridge has to be built to ford it, and thus a road... which all lead to civilization. Well, that's all of the top of my head at this time, hope the advice helps.

What you are referencing as sumac looks to me like pawpaw trees. I hunt ginseng in ky and have a lot of luck in a paw paw patch in a hard woods. I have found a lot of stalks and big stalks at that. 1 tip is to use a pick ax style digger it will help you cut tree roots and dig alittle deeper it does most of the work for you. Keep up the diggin y’all

From what I understand cedars are a sign that area was cut at one point for pasture or whatever because the cedar like to grow in the open. It’s one of the things they say to look for when trying to find old home sites in the woods for metal detecting.
