July 17 is the day of the Gion festival in Kyoto. Three days before the main parade the streets become an open market. people can enter the parade floats and the houses that set up the floats open their doors an display the artifacts and treasures that they have collected over the centuries. The Gion matsuri originated in response to an epidemic in the tenth century. After the outbreak, the emperor ordered that 66 halberds be sent to supplicate malevolent spirits, believed to cause such calamities and their related illnesses. The halberds represented the 66 regions of the country. Over time, these halberts were put into floats creating the present time floats with tall spear-like spires on the roofs. These shingi pole divine lightning rod, are said connect the earth and the sky and enables the god realm to communicate with the human realm. It is inserted in the basic square shape of the float. The number of floats became 33.
