Actually NASA was not ever really segregated. Although technically the toilet facilities were meant to be segregated, it wasn’t enforced. Katherine Johnson said she used the ‘whites only’ toilets for years not knowing it was segregated, and no one complained or told her otherwise. When NASA was first formed in 1958, it began dismantling segregation police’s.

This movie taught me a piece of history I never knew, even though I watched the launch and recovery. These women reminded me we don’t need to settle for less than our dreams. We each have a lot to offer each other and future generations if we work hard and pass on our knowledge to build up others instead of tearing them down.

At that time computers weren’t as reliable as they are now because they relied on human input far more than they do now. The odd thing is that computers would make mistakes that the humans wouldn’t because the humans would make mistakes inputting data. It wasn’t uncommon to see someone pull out a notepad and double check a computer’s results, then backtrack to find their error

Fun fact: this is not the first time that Octavia Spencer and Kirsten Dunst worked on the same movie. They were both in Spider-Man (2002). Kirsten played Mary Jane Watson and Octavia had a small role as a worker at the wrestling match. She was on screen for only a few seconds, but she put a lot of sass into the role to make it memorably funny. I’m glad to see both actresses thriving in the business. 😊

I lived in LaHabra Ca in the days of the Watts Riots. Standing on the roof of our home looking north, I viewed the city of LA in flames. I asked my dad what is wrong why are they so angry. My part Cherokee black headed dark dad said to me: injustice to a people can last just so long, before the dam breaks and the flood destroys everything in its path. When I read about these remarkable women and how they calculated the flight path for John Glenn’s circumnavigation in space; it made me proud.

This was a heartwarming scene. Hidden Figures was/is a heartwarming and sobering story in our American history. And shameful if I have to be honest, that even after civil rights movement we still treated these people this way.
