"Gitanjali/Geetanjali" is a collection of poems penned by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. The collection of 156 poems was first published in Bengali, on August 14, in the year 1910. Two years after its release, its English translation was published in November 1912 by the India Society in London. "Gitanjali: Song Offering" as it was was named by the Poet got immense fame and recognition in other parts of the world especially in the West. Author of the "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful" poetry of Gitanjali, finally became in 1913 the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was the the first person to bring the Nobel prize to undivided India. Tagore's poetic songs were viewed as spiritual and mercurial. Today "Gitanjali" is part of the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works.
