Giulini's final movement of the Schumann Three is definitive. One of the best Schumann Threes on KZitem.

The studio recording Giulini made in 1958 with the Philharmonia Orchestra, also available on KZitem, is still my favorite by a small margin. The first movement is a little less relaxed and more exciting. But it's wonderful to have this live performance of a work that Giulini clearly understood and loved.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the LAPO under the baton of Giulini was the best American orchestra.

Amazing sound from what has to be one of the most acoustically dead halls in the world--- the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Hats off to the recording engineers as well.

For me the best performance ever. Even so called ´Sky High´ orchestra´s like Concertgebouw can learn from this perfect performance. Continuous tension and dynamic level keep the listener awake. Another example of good Schumann playing is the 4th symphony played bij Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Barenboim.

Giulini and the LA Phil produced many fine recordings. DG started recording the LA Phil since it was OBVIOUS this American Orchestra is the equal to the BPO and VPO. DG has been recording the LA Phil for 25+ years. The sound so regal, so clean, robust.

I am not enthusiastic about this recording. It has enough weight but misses sparkle . It is a bit dragging .🏟Especially the strings are too cautious for my taste.. I like Bernstein with the Wiener for Schumann... a bit slow but very rich in tension and colour.

Considering the peculiar style of orchestration of Schumann, it is quite difficult to conduct his symphonies in a prerfectly clear and chiselled way. Guilini meets this challenge. We can hear all details quite clearly. For instance, I love the oboes in the first movement (in all, actually) and the articulation of strings in the last one.

Superb interpretation of Giulini who creates a wonderful cadential gesture as well as crystallizes the orchestra at the height of musical values and with exceptional articulations and expressions. Schumann's "so so" orchestration in his symphonies, however, is particularly successful and convincing with Giulini. Thanks to becuadro 1000 for posting this amazing video !

Recorded, I think, in 1979. His tenure with the LA Phil. was from 1978 till '84. The DGG-CD is not digital.

I think you may be thinking of another recording, because Guilini's 1982 Rhenish with the LA Phil (DG) was definitely a digital recording. A damn fine one, I might add. DG's early digital sound was often shrill and sterile, but that was not the case for Giulini's recordings with the LA Phil from that era... In fact, I would posit that Giulini's LA Phil Schumann 3 is one of the modern wonders of the gramophone. And he uses the Schumann orchestrations too - a welcome thing since early in his career he was a devotee of the Mahler arrangements (which are just too tidy and clean to do justice to Schumann's wild symphonic visions).

most conductors change much of Schumann's orchestration - There is now a recording of the Schumann Symphonies in the edition Mahler did with Chailly and the Leipzig Orchestra on London/Decca. I have just published a book on Eugene Ormandy's score alterations and had the pleasure of examining his altered scores of the Schumann Symphonies in my research. Most of it was done to clarify melodic lines and reinforce the orchestration. Schumann"s orchestration can be muddy and unclear - you would be surprised how much conductor's did alter scores -- mellenpress.com/book/The-Orchestral-Scores-of-Eugene-Ormandy-Creating-the-Philadelphia-Sound/9391/
