ddevicente, I agree absolutely about squillo. Giacomini used the full potential of his registers beautifully. The lower register is full, open throated & sonorous, with a naturally rich pouring quality to it. But he doesn't allow that weight to trespass past the bridge. He reins in the power of the lower register as he ascends to F - F sharp, allowing the upper register to assume its rightful place. Because he floats the voice, the relaxed cords radiate partials & overtones in abundance.

Amazing how much he sounded like Corelli in his early days:) When I 1st showed my teacher a concert video of Giacomini, all he kept sayin' was: He sings like Corelli! He expected him 2B more del Monaco since they had the same technique. Bartolini is the same way...he's more Corelli too. In fact the 1's that sounded similar to the King was Limarilli, Cecchele, Borso, Merolla, Gismondo & especially Barioni:) For those who'll listen 2del Monaco 4 the 1st time, listen 2his recs from the mid 40's:)

I have always admired Vickers, Pertile, Del Monaco, Corelli, Caruso, Bonisoli and of course the teacher Giacomini unfortunately many colleagues criticize those who are not to your liking, Del Monaco screams, Kraus-nasal, Bjorling-bad actor, Placido -struggle with his voice, Pippo - destroyed his voice etc. I understand that the top of Giacomini is colossal, but also created the most colorful and beautiful voice did not belong to history or Gigli or Pippo if Mario Lanza., not as clear operatic tenor.

@Pollione88 Giacomini had one of the most embodied voices of all time which was consistent throughout the scale no matter what role he took nor how old he got. He sang some of the heaviest Italian roles for decades, unrivaled. Unlike Kauffman, this darker placement worked perfectly for his voice.

Giacomini would argue he doesn’t “place” his voice anywhere other that where it actually is - his throat.
@Honken

@@singermanz Ten years later, agreed. To rephrase: Giacomini's vocal technique was fundamentally sound. His dark timbre did not come at the expense of neither squillo, agility or volume. The same can not be said of the previously mentioned tenor, nor many others. Beppe was amazing.

"It's technically not consistent with what he did." His giro, especially at the high(er) notes is exactly the way GG did it throughout his entire career. The way he shapes the vowels is exactly the same as he did in his later years, but without all the darkening. The timbre of the voice should be a dead giveaway. This is GG without a doubt. All the evidence is in the recording.

what recordings of Giacomini do you have? On all of my recordings (because I actually own recordings of him rather than just going on youtube) he sings so loud that he blows the mic out and sings all the way up to the C while still sounding beautiful. But i'm sure you prefer "bel canto" singers like Domiongo who can't sing above a Bb or sustain a note longer than a half note if it's above G. Yet Giacomini in his whole career, even now in his 60's, CAN sing above Bb and can sustain all notes.

I agree that there exists the situation where a sound is big to them and not the listener; I suffered with it for years!!! Make no mistake about it though, a singer who struggles with this can never make a career, much less a famous one! If you listen to Kraus, Gigli, and Di Stefano sing above an F# you will hear that they cover or turn the sound no matter what. An open sound above this would be spread and splatted. Noone is arguing that these voices were not perfectly balanced.

millonety123 this is typical manner of Angelo Mori and Ferraro, not GG.
You can't manufacture squillo. Squillo and brilliance are the result of singing well. Del Monaco was never a light lyric tenor, he just didn't sing correctly when he was young. Criticizing Giacomini's voice because it is dark is like not liking red Ferraris. Its an opinion, and Giacomini does not artificially darken, otherwise he would not be heard over the orchestra.
@wotanman
15 жыл бұрын
I tend to envision Mario del Monaco as Malcolm X and Mellochi as Elijah Muhammad.. just think about it for a second... ;-) btw- Corelli altered (or combined with the best of other Italian training) the bits of Mellochi technique he picked up in order to allow for more lyricism, flexibility, and REAL chiaroscuro. This came from his true instinct as a SINGER-ACTOR. So many young singers now are too "stuck" and so many teachers are too insecure or focused on money to teach great instruments.

you can clearly hear what the natural voice sounded like in this recording of giacomini. he screams in later recordings and that is evident. he has no flexabilty or a way of controlling his dynamics in later recordings. he's pulling a trick on you buddy. its a way of making the voice sound and seem bigger than it is. from all of the my collegues that have worked with giacomini, they agree that his voice is a manufactured instrument NOT true to the style of bel canto.now who doenst understand!

My departed voice teacher who studied with Marcello Del Monaco the brother of Mario said, and rightly so, in 10 years every house will be mic'd because nobody teaches the way to sing over an orchestra. Dont push dont force. How the hell are you supposed to be heard? With visualization? Visualize this visualize that. Mix the head voice. Gimme a friggin break. Maybe for the women, but not for the men. When Maestro Pavarotti was asked "what about head voice?" he said

ALL tenors DO tricks. its called the passagio. WE figure out how to get thru that area everynight. other tricks include over darkening the voice, covering the voice to MAKE the instrumeent sound larger. its quite simple if you have the concept down. dont get me wrong, giacomini sang EVERYWHERE and its not always bad. besides, i wish he had kept the voice nice and FULL lyric like it is in this recording. i have enjoyed some of his singing. like the MET FORZA with price.
