Thank you Karl for this videos, we always get unvaluable information from it. I just want it to get your opinion (not sure if this was discussed on any of your live streams or any other video) about that CGI is a threat to product photographers. Greetings from Argentina.

It will make further inroads in product image creation but it's still currently quicker for me to shoot than CGI, that might be different in 5-10 years.

Hi Karl, beautiful image. simple (not to make it but just looking at the frame) but it says it all. As you already said in the video, it was your idea but I wonder, if you get an assignment for a product are you free to bring up ideas or do you clients direct you to a look (scenery) ? Thanks for the map around 6:15 and thanks for sharing

Thanks. Generally for client work like this the art director would be pretty clear on what they wanted and the 'look'. Prior to some shoots, you'd discuss things with the client and based on suggestions in that meeting they might change direction a little or take some advice on how things could look better, but by the day of the shoot it would usually be pretty nailed down so everyone knew what they were getting paid to deliver.

Whats the difference between using a mirror and something like silver reflector
@VisualEducationStudio
3 жыл бұрын
The mirror is an almost perfect reflection so you can bounce the gradient lighting back again, anything less than a mirror becomes diffused reflection.

Thanks Carl, great image and very well explained. Do you feel that the light on the left of the ledge could be in danger of becoming distracting?

I love it..yet would tone down the highlight on the triangular shape right at the edge. Not giving it a full white that competes with the reflectance on the sticks. just fights the balance a tad, The sharp shape lines already draw the eye to focal point......everyone has an opinion bud. love your work, and your shares. ...

Thank you for your comments but we will have to disagree. It was a deliberate choice on my part to put that light there knowing what it would do. There are visual science reasons why it is there that are intentional. As with every light that I position it gets tested in about 1/3 stops of exposure a few times up and a few times down from the exposure it ends up at to be sure that it's what I want. 'Priming' is another factor to consider and that is when the exposure of another light or area of an image will change the apparent look of an exposure of a previous area even if you don't change it, and as such it's important to continually reassess the 'look' of each light and what it's doing when you balance another light. Even right at the very last stage I may decide 'OK that light needs to go down 1/3 of stop' even though it was correct before because its apparent exposure has changed due to other things happening in an image. This is why a light meter is of no use to me. Where the exposure of each light ends up and why is particular to me and only me and it is based on what I know and feel will work, of course the way I perceive things may be different to someone else but usually it's where it should be for a human viewer or for a person fresh to the image without any explanations, for example when seeing the image on my site for the first time - karltaylor.com/ then the viewer will unlikely question anything about it, they should (hopefully) continually circulate in an image which by all accounts is rather featureless or simplistic in many ways but due to the lighting and connotations they are forced to explore. Interestingly the exposure in that lower left area of the ledge is 9% grey at 239R 239G 239B. The only area close to 255 (just under but not uniformly) is the front metal flat face of the lipstick at the edge. which is also the area of highest contrast point of the image (on the corner of the flat metal face with the cylinder). As a very easy experiment if you take the image off of my website and polygon lasso that triangle shape of the left side of the ledge and then add an adjustment layer pulling the highlight end of the curves down, there is no reduction in exposure on that highlight that will make the image any better. The other thing that can work but still isn't quite as effective is to select that triangle on a new layer and create a gradient of exposure running the opposite direction so that the brighter part is closer to the lipstick, this has merit and I experimented with it during the lighting (wasn't easily acheivable) and again in the post stage but it was still not as effective as it draws your attention away from the lipsticks. As you pointed out all of these things are subjective but it's fair to say I put a lot of thought and testing into most of what I do and there are reasons for that, I certainly don't get it right every time but I would argue that on this one it is.

@@VisualEducationStudio Thanks for the detailed response. Since you trying it and then deciding what direction you took, its deliberate. Easier for someone like me not testing it and imagining a preference not seen. Now you got me curious to try it out and see :-) Thanks for sharing!

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME. I need help making a decision. My birthday is coming up & Im stuck as to what I should upgrade. I started photography with a Nikon D5300 with a 35mm prime f1.8 in 2019, then in March 2020 got a Nikon D810 & only have a 24-70 F2.8 to go with it. Don’t know if to get myself a MacBook Pro work on a website (only have iPad Pro no laptop) or upgrade body again & switch over to Mirrorless finally, Nikon Z6 maybe use an adapter for my 24-70 F2.8? ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED!!!

So its MacBook Pro vs. Nikon Z6: What would improve your pictures "at the moment" more? The software on the MacBook Pro for the final result on the pictures from the Nikon D810, or the newer Nikon Z6 body for the raw files (i don´t know, what the iPad Pro and it´s software is capable to do)? Soon, you will probably go for the other one anyways...

Macbook pro obviously. There's nothing wrong with d810. Besides if you need mirrorless for weight reasons, stick to what you've got for now. If anything your debate should be if you should add a lens or two to your collection. But the truth is, if you don't have a laptop you are restricted even with what you have now. Talking from experience btw

The question you should be asking is WHY you need to upgrade anything in the first place. Just because something new is available is not a good enough reason. If you absolutely NEED a laptop, then you have answered your own question.
