The artistry was squandered and the product sucked. Asoiaf doesn't have a deadline. Martin knows he should get it right, not release something that he doesn't believe in. I think it’s bound to be Aegon III marrying Jaehaera as the final scene (probably in a dialogueless, music dubbed scene). Thats the heart of this story, Alicent vs. Rhaenyra, and her granddaughter and her son marrying highlighted the futility of everything that occurred in this series and between them. The GOT Histories of Lore video for the Dance ends on a haunting note as such, narrated by Shireen: "When Rhaenyra's last son wed Aegon's only daughter, the Dance of the Dragons officially ended. Ash and burned men. All that was left of the Riverlands. Two scared children, spouting oaths they didn't understand. All that was left of the mighty House Targaryen. Ancient skulls, and hatchling that grew no bigger than cats. All that was left of the dragons." Also, pretty sure Larys Strong will choose to be executed out of guilt for betraying his friend. In any case people taking about ending the show at Rhaenyra’s death are crazy.

thing is, i do really like how they've tried to make fire and blood, a history book with pretty weak characterisation compared to the rest of the series (for obvious reasons) more about character. i think focusing on the relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent (especially with making Alicent younger) has made that dynamic alot more interesting and i enjoy alot of the other set up, like showing how Larys is becoming almost a father figure to Aegon could make Aegon's death alot more tragic

My first thought was also Hour of the Wolf. Almost all of the major characters left alive by then are involved in it somehow or other and it would make a satisfactory ending seeing ThrAegon now have a solid rule on a united, but deeply broken realm, a fit for the character himself. I also thought this would be the ideal ending. However, are they even going to do Viserys going missing in the Battle of the Gullet? Because Aegon, Viserys, and Joffrey are currently heading to a port in the Vale to cross to Pentos, they would have no reason to be involved in the Gullet. Speaking of which, are they deliberately trying to avoid horrible child deaths? For example, it looks like Joffrey would have no reason to be in King's Landing during the Storming of the Dragon Pit, and they have already retconned baby Maelor, and then burned Aegon the Elder's cock off.

I think the main issue (i haven't watched the video so I can't say for sure) is the fact that much of the material in this season could've been better utilized across ten episodes. This finale doesn't feel like a finale, it feels like it's meant to be episode 8 out of a total of ten episodes. This episode feels like the build up you'd use for the usual episode nine of GOT and then the calmer episode ten. But, the ending sucked because the season sucked. As well as this, the stagnation of the two main characters. Rhaenyra and Alicent. They keep toying with the idea that these characters *might* do something, in contrast to last season where almost every episode had a very *consistent* growth. Alicent has shown that she is willing to do violent things to meet the goals she wants for her family, and so has Rhaenyra. Yet both characters have regressed. Alicent is selling her family out, that is such an utter betrayal of her character, one that feels unearned. It's a shame, because so many people have highlighted the fact that this plot has neglected other characters for the weakened plots of Alicent, Rhaenyra and Daemon. I think all of these plots could've been interested, but they were stretched thin. Jace at the wall could've been one whole episode, maybe even two. Colys could've actually confronted Rhaenyra, he could've forced her to confess any sort of involvement she may have had with his son's death. Aemond killing Luke. It is a shame, because this is all surface level stuff. Writers block or the writers themselves have really hurt this show that was the peak of media back when it first came out. And there are so many things that are good about this season, so many plots and ideas that are introduced. The Blockade and Blood and Cheese are both things i loved (and feel have been blown out of proportion by the audience due to other mistakes)

For how slow and repetitive the season could be at times, I was confused as to why this was a rushed plot development they introduced and concluded in the finale of all episodes. Instead of Rhaenyra saying she wants to avoid bloodshed for the 5th scene or one of Daemon’s visions or any of the other scenes throughout the season that where repetitive, it feels like they could have made this Tyland negotiation, a larger plot that spans across episodes. I thought it was going to be just one negotiation scene but I was confused when they kept coming back to Tyland doing random stuff with people that were just introduced. Would have worked better if we saw Tyland traveling there a few episodes back and then we could have seen him slowly winning the Tyroshi over as he negotiates with the leaders individually. They could all be in disagreement at first but we could see Tyland make each of them different offers to win them over. Meanwhile, we’re actually getting to know different Tyroshi characters and learning about this new and different culture. Then the final scene where he finally wins them over and they declare they’ll fight for him, could be in the finale as the conclusion to this arc.

I totally disagree on the idea that D&D were lacking in content to follow. Would they have hit every story beat perfectly? No. But, if you've read the books in detail the bones of the future story is obvious going forwards with how the show went. At it's core, they cut 'fake' Aegon from the story, and it completely trainwrecked, Cersei, Jaime, Daenarys, Brienne, Tyrion, damaged Jon's, Varys, Arya's and by extension the dead Tyrell's/High Septon's stories. Fake Aegon would have 100% resulted in Cersei's death, shortly after the destruction of the Sept of Baelor scene, he would have walked into the city borderline unopposed. Cersei's death keeps Tyrion, Jaime and Brienne's stories more focused, rather than with Tyrion and Jaime, trying to justify Cersei living. Cerseis earlier death makes it so they could stick to the books more closely, showcasing her increasing madness. Having an extra Targaryen beat Daenarys to Westeros AND have the love of the common people would be brutal on her. It gives better reasoning for why she wouldn't believe John is a Targaryen. It would help to fuel her paranoia, and feel like everything is being taken from her. It also makes it more of a difficulty, who does she marry to secure alliances? John or Aegon? Both also have a superior claim to hers legally. Varys was fake Aegon's supporter, so obviously with his person being gone his story is broken. Arya's story lacks a payoff, as it's likely she will eventually assassinate fake Aegon, AFTER Daenarys decides to side with him against Jon I believe. Brienne's story weirdly trudges on with Jaime, making it seem like Jamie has amnesia after sleeping with Brienne. Jamie is likely supposed to die right alongside Cersei, likely dying alongside her after the Riverrun Siege. I do think that George's ideas for Brann's plotline learning about the White Walker's 'culture' in the books going forwards would translate poorly to being on TV. So, I do agree with the long night happening, but these other changes heavily damaged other characters motivations and actions. The most EGREGIOUS action of D&D to me though is not killing more characters with The Long Night Battle. 4 characters died, with 1 being extremely minor. That episode should have killed half the cast, and had some surprising deaths. The short version is, we should have seen more from Varys starting in Season 4, and Dorne's plotline should have been abridged in favor of more Greyjoy plots closer to the books. Varys plotline should have showed off fake Aegon at the end of Season 4, he would have interacted with Tyrion briefly on his travels to Daenarys. Fake Aegon should have been established in the Stormlands (noteworthily ignored in the show post season 3), by the end of Season 5, easily taking King's Landing from Cersei in the finale of Season 6, with the Sept of Baelor scene pushed to s6 e9 instead.

The S2 finale demonstrates quite clearly that HotD's problems go way beyond what part of Fire & Blood to end the show. This is a show that is very rapidly going in the direction of Halo and the Witcher - creative leads who demonstrate either apathy or outright contempt to the source material have decided to write their own story and cram Fire & Blood into it. @@johnny_thunder_3024 yeah, I could definitely imagine GRRM writing some "in-universe history" nonsense to try to retcon it into something like that so the show is "fully canonized"... but I personally think that would be a world-building mistake, because the Red Keep is specifically built on the site of the Aegonfort, where Aegon first landed on mainland Westeros. It's a random, unimportant hill by a not-terribly-important-at-the-time river... so did Aegon *plant* a weirwood in his fort? Did *Maegor* when he built the Red Keep?? Or did this one random wierwood tree predate the Targaryens and survive the felling of all the other wierwoods south of the Neck that was carried out by the Andals??? Martin already retconned the wierwood at Raventree Hall to have survived that event once, but at least that makes sense because the Blackwoods were a First Man family who worshiped the Old Gods, not an Andal family who practiced the Faith of the Seven (or even more ridiculous, the notion that a Targaryen family who worship Valyrian dragon-gods would go out of their way to establish the religious symbols of a near-dead faith in their realm)... the idea that a weirwood exists in King's Landing at all is a total disregard of the established history and lore. ... BUT, the show did have alot against it, the writers strikes, fire and blood being very difficult to adapt, budgetary issues, a very difficult section of the book to pull off with what they had, shortened to only 8 episodes when it needed 10. and with all that, for the most part the show is still quality, it has still set up alot of interesting ideas and will still give season 3 a massive pay off if it can up the pace. GoT seasons 7 and 8 on the otherhand fundementally destroy every aspect of the world and characters down to their cores, leave no interesting ideas or directions for progression and had a much stronger base of existing characters and plot lines to work with that were just ignored. i dont understand how people can act like these 2 are comparable. at least when characters made questionable decisions in HotD season 2, they were understandable from different perspectives and had, even at their worst, some justification. GoT's final 2 seasons had none of that.

Gendry would make the most sense and it's probably why GRRM has not finished the books yet. It's the obvious, dark humor choice that all this war happened just for the crown to land at the last king's son anyways. It's perfectly subversive... just not satisfying

I felt that the last episode of HotD was weaker than the rest of the season. The cinematography felt less inspired, more normal than the rest, some scenes were really great but some were really not. The scenes with the triarchy, especially with the captain, felt like forced comedy, reminding us of the latest season of GoT. I also believe the vision Daemon has could have been handled way better. Rhaenyra felt weak when she should have felt strong (when going to Harrenhall) and cruel when she talked to Allicent. Since the rest of the season wants us to root for her, it feels weird.

I personally liked the pirate scenes a lot, they were more entertaining than most of the rest of the show in my opinion. But I completely agree that the pacing of the last two episodes was really off, and the writing was extremely inconsistent. Daemon's "vision" completely undercuts the idea of his character having any real individual free will, which totally undercuts the emotional impact of his final action in the story. All the rivermen apparently forgot that they hate Daemon and respect Tully, who explicitly stated to Daemon's face that he was serving Rhaenyra, not him; there should have been no hesitation among the rivermen to kneel to their queen and ignore Daemon as soon as she showed up. The Alicent conversation was absurd because Rhaenyra demanded "a son for a son" and Alicent forgot that one of her own grandsons HAD ALREADY BEEN ASSASSINATED, and I feel like the entire thing is just going to be a set up for forced conflict when Rhaenyra takes King's Landing and finds Aegon has already fled so she'll inevitably get mad at Alicent and say "yOu LiEd tO mE!" and immediately undo any emotional impact from the "resolution" reached between the characters in season 2... so it was stupid AND probably pointless

I think your ending is good, but there are still loose ends, so i would love as an last episode it starts with the crowning of aegon the III in the destroyed dragonpit and then some couselin lessons and the executions and in the end we see a little cinematic of ruling and being king with his cousel and then we see cregan stark going away with the black aly and then he says winter is coming, and then jon snow tells about the rest of the life and something like and then my great grand grand father jonnel stark was born continung the stark line up to eddard. and then we see what with viserys happend, because i mysself miss the inclusion from him by your version and then we would see as the two brothers reunite that the voice of bloodraven tells something about the things with the mad king so that their line was being usurpet and we see the birth of daenerys linking it to the main series ending with the quote everytime a targaryen is born the gods flip a coin they say on one side madness on the other greatness

Here me out for a sec. I think that Rhaenyra should at some point before her death reveal Aegon's dream to her son Aegon. Last scenes of the show whould then be a breaf montage of Aegon growing up and the rule of reagents with adult Aegon's voiceover where he explains how the prophecy only spells doom for his family and that instead of passing it on to his kids, he writes it down and hides it deep in his library as he cannot bear to hold it within his mind any longer. He finishes writing and puts the scroll into some hidden place within the library. Then the last scene would be like 160 years later when the scroll is found by Rhaegar. It is mentioned in the books that Rheagar changed after he found something in a library so that would be a nice connection between HoTD and GoT. Thats all from me. Thanks for your time.

Okay but the parallel to Bran/the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword for Aegon III would be _lovely_ television. I absolutely agree they shouldn't end it with Rhaenyra's death because too much happens afterwards. It would feel far too abrupt an ending. I'd like to see Alicent's death included in the show as well but I don't know if they will or not. I definitely see Larys' death being one of the big endings. It's what he deserves 😂

Not that I like the format of season 8, but it might actually fit Hot D really well. We could have the battle above the gods eye in episode 1, 2nd tumblton in episode 2, the storming of the dragon pit in episode 3, Aegons reimergance and the flight to dragonstone in episode 4, the moon of 3 kings in episode 5, and the hour of the wolf in episode 6. Make each episode 80-90 mins and there should be enough development so that they all dont feel rushed.

I think your idea for an ending is quite good, however one mayor character would not have met its canonical ending: As fas as I remember, Alicent Hightower would still be alive at that time (which was quite awkward because the regents and Sir Tyland don't want to execute her but she also told her daughter to murder Aegon III). How would you propose to resolve/ complete her Arc, as the show runners clearly don't want her to become a side character who "is just around"?

Idea I had was Aegon 3 and Jaeheara looking sad at one another in the Throne room when Gaemon Palehair tries to cheer them up. It works because Aegon remembers that they had a dragon egg still. i like this ending but i think they should one more scene after this which is a dialogue-less montage or shot of a short timeskip to when Aegon III is reuinted with his brother Viserys II. I think it would end the story in a heart warming manner after most of the cast has died and shows a bit of positivity for the future while also showing the audience how the line of House Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows through.

Overall I really enjoyed this season, but nowhere near as much as s1. It was gutted by both having their budget reduced to only enough for 8 eps and then the writer's strike preventing them from rewriting, but I think they did a pretty good job regardless. My biggest issue is how much of Jace's story they cut. We didn't get to see his negotations in the vale and the north so it left him with nothing to do in the first half of the season. If he hadn't returned to Dragonstone until ep 3/4 then it would have done a lot for both his character and the wider story. Him being away for so many of the events of the early season could have had impacted Rhaenyra and have her spiral down further, basically being alone until Jace returned. It could have also led to some good drama between them and Mysaria, with Jace returning to see his mother isolated from the council and only seeking counsel from this strange woman. It's a shame thinking of the season we could have gotten if they hadn't cut those parts of Jace's story.

Post-S2 finale, I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I've gotta say, this show is dead to me. I wasn't picking on every minor thing that irritated me the whole season, like some people did, like how dragged out it was, because I understood that they have a MUCH more limited budget compared to what later GOT had, that they had constraints, that this season was meant to be more of a setup for actual war to come, I was even willing to overlook some bizarre and frankly just plain BAD writing choices like changing Blood and Cheese, having Rhaenyra go to KL, omitting Nettles etc. and even defended those decisions because I just so wanted this show to turn out good in the end but it just didn't. I always found excuses for the writing team for why they did this or that, but after this SHIT of a finale I'm just done with it, I'm plain not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt anymore because it's already on the levels of GOT S8 bad and it's basically unsavageable, their decision to frame the entire story of the Dance as a story of two childhood friends who are turned into enemies by society around them seemed like a great idea in S1, and arguably it was, but they absolutely FAILED to develop it into a meaningful and good story, instead they chose to severely dumb it down, probably because they think that people who would watch a fantasy show must be all dumb or smth(it probably IS their actual reasoning for many of the choices this season btw) and ruined their own good setup, they "assassinated" all of their main characters(except maybe Jace, but 1) who gives a rat's ass about Jace and 2) he's dead anyway), like it's literally GOT S8 Jaime "I never really cared for them innocent or otherwise"-level of utter dogshit, and even if they tried to do damage control and reverse it(wich they won't do) it just would be equally nonsensical, the last episode was the worst all season and it's not something they can rebound from, and I KNOW they won't even try, they will double down on all the things that made this season bad and make the 3d even worse intentionally out of stubbornness and spite, with S4 probably not being greenlit at all(this ain't GOT after all) but I won't be there for it. I was watching this final montage of where different characters are at, and just felt nothing. Not even the slightest bit of curiosity at where Otto is because all the connection I had to this story is just gone, they managed to wipe it clean. I guess we just can't have nice things anymore, oh well Also Philosophy Tube sucks

Imo the ending should be sad and ominous....I picture something like... after the hour of the wolf, Aegon gets coronated as small young boy and all the dragons skulls are brough out to decorate the hall...while people marvel at the skull they are also a reminder of the fall of the once great house....then the new regents and council is announced and they show a young timid king and you switch to some of the councilors who are something like little finger, varys or tyrion and they talk about how the once great house of dragons has met its demise and another says something like the chaos is ladder speech and with the dragons gone the world is again filled with new opportunities...the end.

They're calling back to GoT for a reason, like they could ignore it and the show would still be amazing.. I think they're wanting to finally re-do it years into the future since they're putting money into this universe.. But perhaps they'll make it animated? Who knows! I actually love the pace of Hotd, they have TRAVEL TIME.. I love that, and I know they're stretching due to budget.. but I'd much rather this approach than rushing we got in GoT seasons 5-6 then far worse in 7-8.. We're getting character moments and interactions that GoT would of ignored completely in its last 2 seasons. And also compare this season to GoT season 2, the CGI/Action scenes/set pieces and sets are VASTLY bigger and more expensive.. People forget that Arya and the Hound were just walking around for a very long time.

spoilers- I don't think the song of ice and fire is passed down to Aegon the 3rd (I imagined right before Rhaenyra is executed, she tries to tell Aegon about the prophecy and isn't allowed somehow) that would make sense with all the Blackfyre rebellions that happen later and Daenerys or Vyseris not knowing about it

Unfortunately I think that if the show continues at the pace S2 did, they have no choice but to end it on Rhaenyra's death. Personally I think ending on the coronation of Aegon III would make the most sense, but in the time we have left I'm just not seeing how it's feasible.

I would honestly be fine if they moved the reunion with Viserys forward in time so that it could occur around the Hour of the Wolf. I think the reunion with Viserys has to happen in the finale, but if it were an epilogue, it wouldn’t be a great final scene for the show, at least thematically. Doing some timeline shenanigans to have Viserys return while Cregan is hand could maybeeee be a satisfying end.

This is still showing victory for the blacks. A marriage between descendants of the greens and blacks could show that this is the end for house of the dragon and peace should follow. It also makes for a bittersweet ending where remnants of the war know what price was paid and agree to a truce. At this point, we can see some characters like Daemon or Bloodraven working in the background to hold onto these peace and trying to fight winter but saying it is inevitable that winter is going to strike and we must prepare for the prince who was promised.
