I listen to this genre for some exciting song structures with riffs you can go back to listen to 50 times and still find new things you overheard before. With generic songs like this I've heard everything in the first listen, maybe the second, and it just doesn't stay interesting for me. So I totally get Metalbirbs argument there. And you don't see it in other genres because people who listen to these other genres that don't have this argument aren't used to / don't expect it to be other than generic, which is fine, just not for some people like me or Metalbirb All in all it comes down to personal preference. There is no "right" or "wrong" or even "intended" way in this genre... Listen to the early MMF stuff, like "Ghost In The Mirror" or "Been There Done That", that stuff is quite far from generic and it's the same band you're defending for being generic now. Metalcore isn't a static genre like EDM is, it is incredibly dynamic and that ofcourse drags along a lot of differing opinions

I loved that pre-Matty era of MMF too, but as someone who was pretty heavily involved in the scene back then, one of the big criticisms of MMF was that they were trying to be Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, while ETID was the big southern metal ore band at the time. So, when Matty came in around 2008-9ish, they moved in another direction. It’s definitely generic, but I do think they do generic better than just about anyone else. It’s good to see them return to form.

The album is actually amazing and there’s a lot more at play here than you’re willing to consider it seems. Memphis is and has been one of the best bands to date. It can’t be denied, their consistency over the years is hard to match. Now that they’re dialing it back and going hard rock it seems weak but the message still caries. Also, the fact that you can understand the lyrics whether it be screaming or cleans, is a rarity in metal. It’s tough, yet clean. Automatic win. Can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say they don’t like metal because they can’t understand what is being said but listen to Memphis and are sold. They’re the band that checks every box

Cool reaction man! You're a tough egg to crack but I appreciate that I guess 😅 Personally I'm glad they went with a generic formula and here's why. People like you make up the 10% (maybe 20) that actually want something "interesting" and that's great. But when it comes to the song being popular it kinda needs that last chorus to seal the deal right? Just my thoughts. That being said, It would but SUPER rad to see them with a southern rock vibe again though 🤞

I understand we all have opinions about songs, but the thing is as with most people in the world it’s not how unique the different sounds are or how technical a song is or how insane a solo is that makes a song rememberable it’s really the melody if you can sing along or home the guitar riff i’d also say four fans of metal core and death core it’s also breakdowns that make songs rememberable to most people but I understand your opinion.
@danielagu6185

One should always factor in that average listener who doesn't necessarily listen to anything outside of post-hardcore/metalcore doesn't really need a strong or innovative structure because let's face it a lot of metalcore is generic nowadays. As a person who has listened to prog metalcore a lot you will always prioritize song structure to generic or 'memorable' approach while a regular listener will favor the latter. That being said I totally agree with you, this song is formulaic and nothing really stands out from compositional perspective. For my own personal taste this song falls short, too, on all fronts. I also liked your argument about the band who has been long in the scene should somehow push the boundaries of the genre (like ABR does for example). However, as a long time MMF listener (to me Unconditional is their best record and I wasn't fond of their first EP nor their debut album) I liked this song way more than anything off of their last record which was, truthfully a sellout record.

I completely respect your thoughts on this one. Personally this one felt more like a return to what I love about their older albums and I enjoyed it. I loved the "The hollow" and "Challenger" and I enjoyed some of the risks they took on unconditional. Back in those days, this sound felt fresh to me and they were top tier of that generic Metalcore sound. Unfortunately every album since then has felt like more of the same. It took me a little while to get into these guys, to be honest, but they really grew on me. Not normally a fan of high-pitched vocals unless they absolutely soar (a la Dan Tompkins from TesseracT) but yeah, MMF really got me hooked over time. I came in during the Unconditional era which, IMO, was the best sound they had as it stood perfectly in between their older, heavier sound and the newer post-hardcore/alternative metal approach. Nonetheless, I think all of their albums and EPs (excluding the self-titled, which I wasn't much of a fan of) are great for their own reasons. They're definitely a "summer band" for me. I'll never forget listening to The Hollow for the first time after picking it up in a mall before attending Creation Fest years ago.

Yo, you say you liked MMF's southern rock-core style. Give the band American Slang a go, the album they dropped last year has been one of the finds of the covid era for me. Reminiscent of Suck Out The Poison era He Is Legend, Every Time I Die or Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. T

I completely agree with you. The song is fine, it's just not that interesting anymore once you've listened to it a few times. I'm gonna go ahead and copy paste my comment I made to another guy here concerning the whole "generic" debate: I listen to this genre for some exciting song structures with riffs you can go back to listen to 50 times and still find new things you overheard before.

Man...I know it's all personal opinion and taste, but I can't stand this "fuck generic music" trend, that's going on right now. I want structure in my songs. I want catchiness and I absolutely love "generic". On the other hand I don't enjoy all those "cool" progressive bands, where you have no clue what their songs want to or are supposed to be. This track is everything else than forgettable, because it's absolutely stuck in my head...so basically the exact opposite of everything ERRA, Landmvrks etc. have put out in the past years. 🤷🏼♂️

Nothing wrong with that though it really depends on how much of this style of music you've listened to before. I do occasionally have an itch for poppy metalcore but because I've heard this style now for almost 20 years it can be forgettable. It also doesn't help that I'm a guitarist so the proggy stuff definitely appeals more to musicians than say the average listener. But this more formulaic music definitely has its place in the scene and keep listening to what you like.

Would be cool if you checked out the Band Omerta - Garbage, really cool new band with an old school Slipknot inspired sound.

There’s literally zero members left from the original band. The first ep they released, yeah nobody from that band is still in. So that sound you want to hear may never return. But Matty and the guys are still amazing at what they do regardless 💯🔥

And let's be honest. The original sound wasn't going anywhere. Matty and the boys have a unique sound that works for them. Generic or not.

Id agree the structure is generic but the song is still fun for me and I mean If I want inventive stuff pushing the boundary I feel like I have plenty of bands to go to for that so guess I don’t mind getting a little formulaic sometimes.

Considering how bad "Broken" was, this is definitely not forgettable...

This is kind of generic that's much better. Much better than that last album which is boring. Glad they are back to being heavy!

Its a....fine song. Especially comparing it to their most recent stuff. But it still doesn't hold a candle to ANYTHING off their first couple EPs. I need me some Ghost In The Mirror vibes
