A year later we set his healthy self free in a sanctuary to have a family of his own. He was so sweet and friendly! He loved his neck and snoop rubbed. We think of him often and hope his ancestors are healthy! They are misunderstood critters, but yet not to be toyed with.

When I was a kid I caught one of these, a huge one, while fishing and it was terrifying, a bunch of grown men has to help me lure him in and then he emerged from the depths like a Cronenberg monster. Add the warnings you get constantly about not letting them take your fingers and toes off, and I was totally spooped by them. Then, as an adult, I see my cousin's little girl start bringing them home and they LOVE her. They were let back into the wild but the damn things still recognize her and will cuddle up like this. She has special needs and isn't like this with other animals, but the snapping turtles, they're like her brigade of scary dino children. I retain my healthy respect for them but sometimes you meet a snapping turtle whisperer who reminds you that they're cute af in their way

Reptiles and amphibians don’t have any kind of emotions like love and stuff like that. Those things are scientifically not written in their brain. It’s already strange enough that a reptile accepts to be touched like that. The fact that it acts like a dog is kinda mind blowing to me😂
