Screen writing at its best. Love the part when they say " people want to know how the stories going to end" It's called exposition in screenwriting. The movie is actually describing the events that the viewer is watching. It's like giving away the plot, yet people are unaware because there caught up in the emotion of the movie. It happens in Back To The Future~ Theirs a scene where Doc Brown says something like " You have to go back in time to make sure your parents meet at the enchantment under the sea dance to set the timeline straight." He's basically giving away the whole plot of the movie early on but nobody notices this because of all the action yet to happen.

The end scene is more powerful than any of the fighting as it shows how truly powerful he is compared to Commodos. Maximus is both dangerous (obviously) and disciplined (couldn't be goaded). This is the classical masculine hero archetype of myths. Some very smart people were very aware of this and beautifully portrayed the archetype in the movie

Here's a bit of a philosophical analysis I'd like to share, giving credit to the depth of this scene and movie as a whole. Beforehand, here's some need-to-know facts: 1 - Gladiators were mostly slaves or ex-slaves or convicted criminals. Either were treated little more than 'cannon fodder' for the Public's contentment. 2 - An Emperor who wanted to keep the people happy under his rule (especially in the years AD) had to give what the people wanted. This is like a cruel irony to the man almost considered a god - he has all the power essentially, yet the people's happiness is what drives them to the point the border between "Emperor's power" and "peoples' power" gets very blurred. (there were Emperors who got assassinated for reasons, besides immediate political enemies). 3 - It's not too commonly recorded, but Gladiators could retire by earning their freedom - the average age was between 20-35 years, and survivability pretty damn low. So for a retired Gladiator to be called back into the arena is even less common. This can be seen as both a massive 'once in a life-time' spectacle for the people, the Retired Gladiator can see it as a way to die a relatively honourable death (as far as is possible for Gladiators), and for the Emperor to be able to summon a retired Gladiator might establish his authority with a hint of 'done for the people'. 4 - Most of the Gladiators were in fact trained to 'be' Gladiators. The training was rigorous yes, but their fighting technique was different to a professional legionnaire. Maximus as portrayed here was a soldier, not just a public-entertaining fighter. There's a HUGE difference there, primarily in discipline and mindset. A gladiator was trained to fight mostly alone and for himself, legionnaires to fight as one with and for their brothers at arms. Not only does this enhance the legionnaire's discipline but it also trains them to think the bigger picture. And Maximus was a General at that! 5 - Remember the saying 'You reap what you sow'. Now, this scene captures a number of things. The plot against plot - Emperor wants Maximus dead, Maximus wants the Emperor dead. Both have their methods and the Emperor seems to have a huge upper hand just by being Emperor. He literally has a cohort of Praetorian Bodyguard at his disposal, an army of gladiator slaves and ways to simply have Maximus executed as convicted criminal. Yet this is where Commodus' weak persona shows itself; he is afraid, very afraid. Afraid to be rejected by the people as Emperor like his father rejected him fit as Emperor. So, in order to win the peoples' favour, he gives them what they clearly want; food and top-notch entertainment. He thinks that by putting Maximus in the death-pit, he can kill two flies in one clap - kill off his nemesis and win the public's favour. However, Maximus is no ordinary gladiator. He has lost everything he held dear yet still lives. What's more, he knows the structure of Roman control due to his military experience and the close almost father-and-son bond he had with the previous Emperor (Commodus' father). Maximus knows Commodus' weaknesses and having been a General he furthermore knows about crowd-control. What you get is much more than "an eye for an eye" revenge scenario. You get a very well depicted showdown between the two characters a man can be like: One with no visible power yet integrity, honour and maturity - the other with the most power in the World at the time but with selfish ambitions, no integrity and fear. Maximus demolishes Commodus' position of power by playing well the cards he has been given. He is a victim of corruption but doesn't PLAY the victim, he rises victoriously. Commodus thought he could destroy Maximus by taking away his belongings (property, servants, wife and son and status), but he exposed a fatal flaw in his plan: underestimating the power of character. And despite all the power he has, he in fact does play the victim and loses self-control when things don't go his way. By Maximus playing his cards well, I mean the following: - He understood Commodus' motives from the start, as well as his 'position of power' and fear of losing that position ("know your enemy"). - He understood what the people wanted ("know your surroundings"). - He had his own goal very clear ("know yourself"); it wasn't just to kill Commodus, it was to fully give back what Commodus had done to him. Rob him of his position of 'feeling powerful' by defying the 'kill' command 4:16 , deny the taunt Commodus gave him ("kill me now, I'm right in front of you. 5:42 ) and showing his stronger character by denying Commodus the pleasure of mockery (about his wife and son ). Maximus was giving a clear message: "You can kill me, but you cannot destroy me." And to be able to do that after all Commodus had done to him, his character radiated everything Commodus wanted to be but couldn't be. There's no deeper sense of defeat and shame than that! I think it's fair to say that this scene was where Maximus had won his footing over Commodus. And it shows a great life's lesson: To be truly victorious is to triumph over yourself first. Something Maximus has, and Commodus has not. Status means nothing compared to this; status improves through the victor character and degenerates by victim character. -- If I have missed a vital point, please don't hesitate to share your thoughts.

Good analysis. Much of this seems to come from Maximus’ Stoic mindset.. he seems unwaveringly committed to Stoicism.. However.. I think this movie and this scene would have been more powerful had they made Maximus a Christian Convert…. They could have left out the entire fabricated Commodus murder… and simply had Maximus arrested for his conversion. (Although a fictional Marcus Aurelius conversion to Christianity would have been kind of amusing… He convinces Maximus before he dies.. Commodus hates Christians so much he cannot slow a top general to display such treason…. Then all of this happens.. a Born Again Christian forced to fight in the area forced to endure killing and the ire of the mad emperor. That type of thing probably did happen. Eusebius discusses during this time many high-ranking officials getting arrested for conversion.. There is a story of a guard of a Christian woman who converted even while he was escorting her to her execution…. He later was found out and he himself executed. I know the deleted scenes in this have Christians being fed AD BESTIAS…. and it might me the case I should just go watch ‘The Robe’. 😎👍🏽

We actually don't know what the pollice verso looked like as the phrase translates to "turn of the thumb". There is no account from the era of ancient Rome actually describes it. Like most of the pop culture things we "know" about Rome (like the so-called "Roman Salute") it came from a 19th century painting.
