Fun fact in addtion to Rick's: Commodus and Marcus Aurelius were real people, maximus definitely was not. Marcus Aurelius is known as the Philosopher King, he was a wise ruler that spent his life in the borders of rome fighting German Barbarians. but he never wanted at any point in time, to give power back to the senate (honestly the senate was usually a bunch of corrupt old men that wanted the power remain with the Aristocracy and not the people) When Marcus Died (commodus didn't kill him), Commodus basically spent his entire rule not doing what the last 5 emperors before him (who were widely regarded as the best Roman Emperors) did. He spent it spending the Roman treasury for bread and circuses to make the people happy, he spent so much that he was bankrupting the Roman Treasury. he also spent his days in the arena, but there was no danger, he mostly fought animals that absolutely had little to no chance of escaping or harming him. he killed hippos, giraffes, Ostriches, and all sorts of exotic animals. eventually he was assassinated. and thus the Pax Romana (The Peace inside the borders of the Empire) came to an end. and Rome just steadily went into decline after, it would never reach the same heights that it did during the period of the 5 Good Emperors.

I loved this movie when I first saw it. Like Rick, I know some history about the movie and the historical inaccuracy. I'm a history buff and I found out later about it how, Commodus is based on an emperor but not real. That gladiators didn't really fight to the death. They usually fought animals or each other but rarely died. And what people don't really notice, is that there were a few female gladiators though they were rare. But despite all the inaccuracies, I still give high praise to this movie, it's so iconic.

Commodus shows from the start just how painfully stupid he is. While it might be selfishly justifiable to want Maximus dead, it would've been far more beneficial to his position to have Maximus taken out and killed, then claim he was assassinated and martyr him for Commodus' own gain. Say some savage that survived the battle, got him as he was walking the grounds of the camp. Then, praise him, make him the hero his troops believe he was, give his family special status, and use his name as a rallying cry to bolster support for his claim to the throne. As it is, had Quintus agreed that Maximus' family would be well-cared for, even given special status (at Commodus' order), he probably would've gone off to his death with no resistance. Commodus CREATED the problem by giving him something to fight for. Had they just promised (and kept the promise) to care for his family and elevate them, he might've just let himself die for their gain. Like killing yourself for the life insurance to help your family. Commodus was just an idiot. He was kind of terrifying, and extraordinarily dangerous...but very very stupid.

1:02:22 - Whilst the film is for the most part historically inaccurate, Quintus refusing to help aka betraying the current emperor would be some what accurate as the pretorian guard were often the ones that killed or betrayed the emperors they are sworn to protect. I wonder if there was a concious decision there or if it was merely a character arc thing.
@chaost4544

I've interpreted the Quintus character as the "perfect Roman" or "Ideal Roman" role. He was loyal to the state and Emperor but also lives by a code. It might also be nod by Ridley Scott showing how powerful the Praetorian Guard would become.
@Beltims
Жыл бұрын
There is definitely a character arc for Quintus although most of it was deleted. He is a loyal and dutiful soldier who sides against Maximus not because of personal reasons (he clearly respects Maximus) but because of duty and probably fear of what would happen to him and his family (if he has any). Honestly, most people would do the same thing and it was kinda dumb for Maximus to reject Commodus' offer. There is a deleted scene where Quintus is forced to execute two of his men by Commodus. And later in an another deleted scene just before the final duel between Commodus and Maximus, he tries to justify his actions to Maximus by saying "i'm a soldier, I obey". These events and the fact that Commodus gets beaten finally causes Quintus to lose all respect to him. He is not really the usual stereotypical scheming Praetorian guard commander who switches sides solely because of power and money.

I know it sounds like a cliché, but seeing Gladiator for the first time when I was 12/13 had such an impact on me. I wouldn't say it's my favourite film of all time, but it is definitely a huge milestone on my journey of loving movies. After seeing it, I knew that from that point on I would never think about films the same way again. It inspired me to want to learn more about films and filmmaking as a process rather than just enjoying them as mindless entertainment. When people ask me where my love of films comes from, I always tell them that it started with Gladiator.

Fun fact: The woman who played maximus wife is actually Ridley Scott's wife, Costa Rican actress Giannina Facio Scott

Commodus, was a real Emperor no? Obsessed with gladiator fights and even fought in some. I think he was killed by his trainer who wrestled and strangled him in his bathtub.

If it's not impertinent to ask, I wonder why these guys don't put subtitles on for their reactions? It's inevitable that someone will talk over some critical line or info when there's a whole group reacting, no?

For some reason Scott chose Caesar over Augustus. By the rule of the Five Good Emperors, the official title of an Emperor was Augustus. Caesar would later be used as the title of the Augustus' heir, a deputy emperor.

He chose that because most people just know about the Caesar title.

I have followed this channel for a few years and I still need to avoid reactions where he is in them or if it’s a complicated movie where he won’t understand anything (thus talking even more)
