The 2 Jennifers put the theatrics into this song but only Gladys could have put the soul into it like this. She is the ultimate singer who can sing any damn song and make it a hit. She doesn't just sing, she works every song and make it her own. Her voice is simply magnificent!

And then there's the Queen Of Soul....She is just crazy & super gifted....And Gladys is right next to them all. I love Gladys too. But Aretha is my all time Favorite...lol Aretha to me just have soul even when she is not even adding any of her gospel roots to a song.

@Kaalec Of course; everyone is entitled to their view and I similarly wish that ladies like Gladys were widely listened to show us how it is done. I just feel Whitney is more than good enough to be seen in the same light. It's a shame that she isn't what she was but no one can ever take away what she did nor her title the voice. Anyway, I'm so glad I found this live recording; it's fantastic.

@streetender1878 - I think you might be confusing Jennifer Holliday with Jennifer Hudson. Ms. Holliday was the original, very FIRST person to ever sing this song - she introduced it in the Broadway version of "Dreamgirls" in 1981. Hudson sang it in the movie in 2006.

streetender1878- Ms Holliday did in fact originally sing the song for the Broadway version of of Dreamgirls and also won a Grammy and a Tony in 1982. This is where the song originated. PLEASE though take nothing away from OUR EMPRESS - the irrefutable great one of all time - Miss Gladys Knight - the lady can SING - and it sounds like it belongs to her.

Gladys doesn't care for Aretha's conceit...Gladys is a very humble and real person, and Aretha really takes that "Queen" nonsense seriously, as demonstrated by her vexation at the Grammies this year with Beyonce over her introduction of Tina Turner. Gladys is as real as it gets in the entertainment industry...Tavis Smiley asked her in an interview when it was that she realized she had truly made it in the business; Gladys's response: "I never did [think of myself in that light]."

I could really see Gabrielle Union playing her! I thought the same thing for years. The tone of her speaking voice is close to Gladys'. Think about it. Angela Bassett didn't have to sing herself when she played Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do With It". Tina did all the singing, so for any parts in the movie where Gabrielle (as Gladys) has to sing, Gladys can just stand behind the camera and sing while Gabrielle mouths the words. Gladys' recordings can be used otherwise.

I remember Aretha stating, in response to Gladys' saying she wishes Aretha and she could have been closer, she gave GK&P a ride in her jet. Also, from Gladys' autobiography, whether real or perceived, she felt Aretha historially snubbed her and was intentionally rude. From Aretha's autobiography, she was very offended by Gladys' repeating things her mother said about Aretha's mother and her abandonment of Aretha prior to her early death.

@numonemofan Since I have been a professional musician for 30 years, I think I might have a slight understanding of music. In my opinion, Whitney's belting sounded a lot like yelling. Mind you, whenever she came on the radio, I knew where all the neighbourhood dogs were from their howling (which wasn't nearly as annoying as Ms. Houston's alleged singing).
