Thanks for uploading this and other programmes it's really appreciated , they're a brilliant spotlight on the struggles of working class people. I'm from Ireland but a very frequent visitor to Glasgow and the decent working class are the salt of the earth. In Scotland , Ireland and all around the world we've been the victims of the town planners , career politicians and corrupt government but , hopefully , we can build a better society for all in the future.

Many thanks for posting, very interesting. The closure of Parkhead Forge and ultimately the demise of shipbuilding on the Clyde is a deep subject which was being replicated across the UK and was deliberate. The Club of Rome and Maurice Strong helps one to understand what is really going on and what the real objective's are! Clyde built meant something around the world for nearly 2 centuries, all of a sudden these highly skilled people are thrown on the scrapheap for the rest of their lives , their communities and culture broken apart!

Great time capsule programme that is a timely reminder to everyone who sees the past as a rosy garden. Some huge struggles shown here from the lonely elderly to the hopeless gluesniffers. Thanks.

Exactly. Domestic violence much worse. Street violence much worse. Drugs much worse. Alcoholism much worse. Housing much worse. Vandalism much worse. Employment much worse. Social mobility much worse. Educational opportunities much worse. The misery of poverty is far from over but it's nothing like it was in the 70's, 80's and even 90's. There were conditions in Glasgow back then that weren't far short of third world.

In the days when the men were made of steel and the boats were made of wood, now the men are made of wood and the boats are made of steel. In the ship yards they were hard men, and here they know what there talking about! Hats off to yous guys! When they built high flats in scotland in the early 1960s they would have been great compared to the old tenement slums that most had grew up in with no heating or even a toilete or a bath tub to get washed, so yes it would be great for that time, but bye the 1980s i thought the high flats wernt a nice place to stay. A mean the living rooms that had verandas looked bad with one wall just all plastic with a huge 13 feet wide window above the plastic wall that had the veranda door and at 15 levels high off the ground you were really living in the clouds. And in glasgow they had flats at 35 levels high? A mean thats like living in space! Every one a knew wanted out of the high flats to a smaller house on ground level at least. A can remember people saying to me that the high flat moves a little becouse they have too to stay up. But i really didnt believe them until i was in one flat at level 14 and standing on the veranda looking strait down for a few minutes and sure enough i could see it moving! I would say the huge long building was swaying about 2 to 3 inches to each side, but i knew all down the cavities between the two walls on the outside of the building had long thick sheets of steel to support the block or it would just crumble through time. I wouldnt say they were dangerous. But by the 1990s even the goverment said no one should be living in high rise flats in this day and age! Great video btw.

I'm old enough to remember the last of the closes with toilets on the half-landings, some so poorly maintained the effluent would run freely down the stairs as children played. There are still issues in some areas, like Govanhell for example, our First Minister's constituency where there's an huge issue with rats and domestic waste being abandoned in the back courts of Alison Street, Westmoreland Street, and Landside Road. The area has a large Roma gypsy population who bring certain social habits with them. Their low quality private accommodation owned by Asian landlords, one of whom is or was at least, an SNP MSP (I forget his name, but he was photographed posing with a Kalashnikov rifle at the height of the terror attacks in the UK) What our forefathers would make of today's situation in the second city of the Empire.

I believe this housing problem will resurface in the next 30 years as many of the new houses in the east end are subpar as cuts were made right from early in the development. They may look good atm but shall show to be substandard all in good time unfortunately.

My cousin is a builder and said the same. He's going out to look at repair work on roofs on houses that are ten years old! These new build companies have a lot to answer for. We need a government who's willing to invest over the long term in affordable social housing instead of just private companies building swathes of wildly overpriced poor quality timber kits.

Middle classes to the west? That was a belter of a generalisation…. I grew up in the west end & most were latchkey kids with very little to eat indoors. Huge tenements that had fallen in to disrepair. The west end was a front - fur coat & nae knickers.

When will the establishment ever learn, spend the money on the people, let them flourish first, then worry about infrastructure later, the people must be helped to regain skills and some will move on to seek growth for themselves and for their families, those that are left behind can repatriate in their neighbourhoods with a sense of belonging not a past but to a future, this rarely happens.
