Hi the canal towpath separate from roads and cars - I’d say it’s probably one of the longest if not the longest off road cycle path in the UK - it’s a lovely ride and would suit anyone not comfortable riding on roads. You just need to think about where you’re going to join the cycle path from your car or by train which may involve a short ride on roads etc

@@eurojolly thanks. Will definitely give this a try. I need one of these long distance ride anyway to train my endurance.

Is it tarmac or gravel? Or a mix of both? Would really love to cycle this route but I'd be on a road bike. Not the narrowest tires but if I can avoid a puncture that'd be grand. 😊

Hi 👋🏻 it’s mostly tarmac, at the very start from Clydebank there is some hard packed fine gravel but would be ok with road tyres and then it’s pretty much paved all the way to Edinburgh. One or two places where you need to dismount for tunnels and aqueducts where you’ll find cobbles or gravel. It’s a lovely flat route with plenty of options en route to catch a train if you had a mechanical or wanted to break up the journey 🏴

It would have been much quicker to cycle up to Speirs Wharf to the north of the City Centre, cycle the short distance of the Port Dundas branch of the Forth & Clyde Canal to the Stockingfield Junction and then turn right onto the Forth & Clyde Canal proper.

Hi - I did consider joining from Glasgow City directly but wanted to ride the route NCN 754 from its start in Clydebank through to Edinburgh.

How long did this route take, I've always wanted to cycle it, I normally do Glasgow to Lochwinnoch but would love to go the other way

The whole 100 miles (Glasgow - Kirkintilloch - Strathblane - Kirkintilloch - Edinburgh) took 10.5 hours of which 8.5 hours was actually moving time, the rest was cafe stops, photo stops and the occasional breather for a drink. My average speed was a comfortable 12 mph. The great thing about this ride is that it’s nearly all off road and flat and there are railway stations along the way should if you need an exit plan or even to break up the ride over a couple of days. Glasgow to Falkirk / Falkirk to Edinburgh for example :) The route to Lochwinnoch is on my to do list, I’ve rode from Glasgow to Johnston but then branched off on the NCN 75 to Greenock, another lovely old railway line.

Did you have any issues with navigation on the route? I'm hopeless with directions

Hi Andy - I had the route preloaded to my phone and used that as navigation to help keep me on track, but otherwise the route was very well sign posted and once you were on the canal towpath it was fairly easy. A nice ride, flat and traffic free, highly recommend it - Steve
