"Glasom moyim ko Gospodu vozzvakh" (With my voice I cried unto the Lord) is Sacred Concerto No. 14 by Alexander Arkhangelsky (1846-1924), an outstanding Russian sacred composer and choir conductor. This concerto consists of selected verses from Psalms 142 (141) and 13 (12) that relate to different periods of David's life. The concerto is filled with deeply personal prayerful feelings, expressed already in the first theme. Here one hears weariness from the storms and passions of life, and at the same time so much hope in God, a hope that justifies everything, a hope that pours complete peace into the sick soul and serves as a support for all life.
Arkhangelsky's Sacred Concertos occupy a special place among the late Romantic works created in this genre. They reflect in their own way the novelty of the harmonic thinking of the era, the characteristic features of melodic organization, and the principles of the score's construction, which echo the secular choral miniatures of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, it is no less important to note that they reflect to a certain extent the legacy of the classicist canons of the sacred concerto genre and the artistic search aimed deep into the Russian tradition of liturgical singing.
The Yale Russian Chorus performs the first part of the sacred concerto.
📌 Lyrics:
With my voice I cried unto the Lord.
With my voice I made my supplication to the Lord.
I will pour forth my complaint before Him.
I will proclaim my grief to Him.

Friends, welcome to our channel!
The Yale Russian Chorus is the oldest singing group in the New World dedicated to the music of Russia and nearby countries. The YRC was founded 1953 at the height of the Cold War. Founders: Denis Mickiewicz and George Litton.
Singers join while students at Yale, and many stay active throughout their lives. Every year or so we hold a major concert in which students and alumni sing together. Many alumni also join the students on tours to Russia.
Without a doubt, each of us had our own motivation to join the Russian choir. But we offer you a quote from one of the members of our choir, which unites us to some extent and explains a little the meaning of the choir in our lives: "Singing the music of the YRC in the style we sang it, was an antidote to the intellectualism that got many of us into Yale in the first place, but that could be so restrictive to the heart and spirit".
The singers are not Russians, or emigrants from Russia, but are students and former students who share a passion for the music and a belief in the power of music to build connections between people of different countries.
Thanks to KZitem, we are pleased to share these recordings with online audiences around the world who share our passion for this music.
