Why not use a Metabo with a mortar cutting blade. I am going to cut blocks out of an existing window as you did, but I am going to use a stone cutting blade that costs $14.00 from Walmart.

Sounds like a good plan. I didn't have an angle grinder (metabo?) back then. If you use it the standard warning to be safe applies. You might have to come from both inside and outside to get thru the full block width. Be careful about the steel lines that are more than likely inside some of the seams. That might make the metabo jump up a little if you hit one. Thanks for your comment!

This is interesting, I thought the blocks would be broken more easily. In my country metal rods are used between the blocks.

I want to do the same thing in a nearly identical window. What kind of window did you put in? And how did you affix it? Sorry if this is a dumb question; I am not familiar with windows and installation techniques.

Hi Rosann, there's no such thing as a dumb question. Or I once heard the only dumb question is one you were too scared to ask. :) So here is a link to the window I used. I didn't actually do the installation, I gave the window to contractors that we're doing tile work. It looks like they used heavy duty caulking and that is it. Mine came out very good and window works great to allow fresh air into bathroom. This window fits exactly into a 2x4 block of glass (after removal.) Of course you need to take measurements of your glass block and compare with the sizes on website. But generally it should be a perfect fit. www.homedepot.com/p/TAFCO-WINDOWS-31-75-in-x-13-75-in-Hopper-Vinyl-Screen-Window-PV-HOP32X14/100671879

Good video. I’m a firefighter and we use a sledgehammer to knock out glass block and it’s a b$&@!. I was going to try that in my bathroom. I’m glad I watched this first. Did you use mortar to Hulu the window in place?

mihnic0504. Thanks for the comment. The window has been a great addition to the bathroom for 4 years now. It was secured in place by the same handyman crew that did tile surrounding the tub. That job was for the pros. I know they used caulking and it looks like a silicone/latex blend. My favorite caulking is Dynaflex 230 for all places. As to mortar, don't think would work with the vinyl window sides. Maybe if it was a metal window. Good luck on your projects, and thanks for your service to your community as a fireman!

I have exactly the same blocks. I think because of the house shifting one is cracking. I was wondering if you remove one will the others move or crack from loss of support...I was thinking of cutting some 2x4 pieces to insert once I removed one...any ideas where to buy these blocks? How do u get a match or are they standard...

Well, my house is from 1998, but it seems like they have not changed much. To get a sample, go to the front desk at Home depot, and ask to have 1 block delivered for pickup in the store. www.homedepot.com/p/REDI2CRAFT-7-1-2-in-x-7-1-2-in-x-3-1-8-in-Glass-Block-for-Arts-and-Crafts-5-Pack-CB0808W/302762931.

As to there being only 1 cracked glass and your concern that the window won't be stable... hmm First, these are extremely stable basically a mortared together wall of glass blocks. So if you knocked out 1, it will make basically zero difference to the rest of it. But you have to remove it carefully so as not to damage the other block. Now, if it really cracked due to foundation problems, you don't want to replace it with another block... you might be dealing with more cracking blocks too. Honestly, it sounds like your situation is cosmetic, which is a real problem, but maybe a patch over the 1 cracked one will look ok? You could use a nice 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 piece of decorative tin. Or you could try the drilling, cutting and replacing 1 block, you'd have to take care to get it matching tho, as your new mortar will he a different color than the aged original. And you won't have the metal guidelines of the metal runners. Good luck and thanks for the comment.

@@tkmair6559 I dinged one of my other blocks one time and air came out...they are vacuum sealed I think...not that one is getting green inside :>)...at some point as the crack gets worse I will need to do something...i was thinking an angle grinder or chisel..although I would think a chisel would introduce more change of breaking the surrounding blocks...u found the drill to be the best? Some sort of cement drill...i do have a hammer drill...

@@kenmcf they way I did is, start with drill use masonry bit. After drill out enough to slide in blade, use sawzall (reciprocating saw). You have to get a diamond crusted saw blade. You can Also use a flat head screwdriver as a chisel between the drill holes. Now that you mention it, starting with a angle grinder, might be good too. The thing is to get to where you can use that sawzall. Because that's what can cut all the way into the corners.

Yeah, chisel is great idea. Just use something small and easy to control. Good luck. Go slow and careful.
