~The "Glass Shatterers!" series focuses on sopranos who sustain High F, or sing higher.
THE SONGBIRD: Spanish-born Ruth Iniesta began studying ballet and flamenco dancing, then later changed focus to piano and voice at the Conservatorio Superior Arturo Soria and at the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid. Iniesta made her debut in 2012 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela and in 2018 first appeared at Arena di Verona singing Liù, Micaëla, and Rosina. The following season she sang Gilda in Palermo and Torino, and Nannetta in Madrid with Laurent Pelly directing. Iniesta has also appeared in Berlin, Vienna, Mallorca, Liceu, Pesaro, Bologna, Trieste, Wexford, and Sydney, in roles including Lucia, Elvira, Norina, Musetta, Giulietta, Susanna, Donna Anna, Adina, Corinna from "Il viaggio a Reims," and Violetta.
THE MUSIC: Rossini's "Armida" was written in 1817 to reopen Naples’ newly built opera house after a fire the previous year. Isabella Colbran, Rossin's wife, sang the title role. It includes a showpiece in Act 2: "D'more al dolce impero," which is structured as a theme and variations, with each repeat of the aria being more elaborately decorated. The score is also noteworthy in that Armida is the only female character, and is surrounded by six tenors!
