A wild and rugged valley beneath the watchful eye of Ben Vorlich.
This ride started at Callendar, heading on the abandoned rail track to Loch Lubnaig, then we had the challenging climb north towards Glen Ample, following the Ample burn down to Loch Earn and finally stopping at the Broch Café in Strathyre.
Our hardy crew consisted of 3 gravel bikes, one electric and 3 mountain bikes, two of which being electric and unless you are a very confident gravel biker, my suggestion would be mountain bike is more suited.
We set off from the carpark in Callender and followed the river Garbh Uisge (garav OOSHkuh) or (which means Rough Water) to the start of Loch Lubnaig. Then a short stint on the A84 took us to the beginning of a long and in parts steep forestry track to the start of Glen Ample once through the deer gates, with excellent views down to Loch Lubnaig as a reward.
The full blooded highland views started along with more challenging track.
There were numerous obstacles like eroded track; gulleys across the track; boulders and a number of small burns. Not forgetting a few gravelly climbs.
Whilst Jim and I managed to ride cross most of the rocky burns on our heavy eMTBs, the others experienced their own crossing challenges.
However some were too much for us all.
The rather muddy and rocky single track kept you on your toes.
On this section I took the opportunity to have a wee lie down! No plants or midges were injured as it was a soft landing.
After the rather technical section we were soon back on a very comfortable forestry track, enjoying the views all the way to Loch Earn.
At Lochearnhead, we headed South on the excellent gravel trail all the way to Strathyre and the Broch Café for a well earned snack.
My journey ended here but the rest of the crew headed back to Callendar on the disused railway line cycle path.
As usual I hope the movie gives you some idea about the terrain and challenges of this trail, I have added the RideWith GPS link below.
