Thomas (who I commented in your previous video had just passed away last month) sitting on the other side of Chet near Crystal. And the man hosting the show is Ralph Emery. (He was a popular Nashville country music host for many years). He's the one that said, "That's feels good" at the end. Glen Campbell came from a little town in Arkansas, and went to Los Angeles as a session guitarist. He played on half the records of the ‘60s: Frank Sinatra, Beach Boys, Merle Haggard, Lou Rawls, Elvis Presley, ... Then they realized he could sing too, and he toured as a Beach Boy and then became a recording artist. John Wayne liked him, and even though he had never acted, asked him to co-star with him in ‘True Grit’. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his acting and an Academy Award for singing the theme song. Then, of course, he got his own TV show... The solo he plays here is incredibly difficult. He’s playing an unamplified acoustic guitar, there is very little sustain (the tones fade out quickly), so nearly every tone has to be individually picked, synchronized left and right hands, and when you see how fast he plays... that’s why all these great players are grinning and clapping like kids. Willie Nelson and even Roy Clark just look amazed.

"Gentle On My Mind" written by: John Hartford LYRICS: It's knowing that your door is always open And your path is free to walk That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag Rolled up and stashed behind your couch And it's knowing I'm not shackled By forgotten words and bonds And the ink stains that are dried upon some line That keeps you in the backroads By the rivers of my memory That keeps you ever gentle on my mind It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy Planted on their columns now that bind me Or something that somebody said Because they thought we fit together walking It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find That you're moving on the backroads By the rivers of my memory And for hours you're just gentle on my mind Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines And the junkyards and the highways come between us And some other woman's cryin' to her mother 'Cause she turned and I was gone I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind But not to where I cannot see You walkin' on the backroads By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind I dip my cup of soup back from a gurglin' Cracklin' caldron in some train yard My beard a roughening coal pile, And a dirty hat pulled low across my face Through cupped hands 'round the tin can I pretend to hold you to my breast and find That you're waiting from the backroads By the rivers of my memories Ever smilin' ever gentle on my mind

These were the best of the best sitting with him. Legends in the group were there, many, many of them, like Willie Nelson, and the incomparable Roy Clark, who was a wizard on a guitar, fiddle, banjo, etc. Glen had them all there, his peers; and they loved his work. Nothing says you are in a league of your own when the legends of the day look at you as a legend.

One of the people in attendance at 2:16 is one of my favorite artists of all time: Roy Clark, You should definitely review some of his songs, there is Malaguena which is featured on stuff like the Odd Couple, Yesterday (When I was young) and just so many more. Roy Clark was a fantastic artist who played so many different instruments across his long life.

That was, as you know, Glen Campbell - "Gentle On My Mind" which was Live on "Country Homecoming Ryman", 1999. "Here's Glen performing a beautiful version of the John Hartford classic "Gentle On My Mind" live on "Ryman Country Homecoming" filmed in 1999 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Ray Stevens was honored to be on stage for this special event along with country pioneers Chet Atkins, Waylon Jennings, Lorrie Morgan, Willie Nelson, Roy Clark, Lynn Anderson, Bobby Bare, T. Graham Brown, Ralph Emery, Janie Fricke, Barbara Fairchild, Larry Gatlin, Crystal Gayle, Geezinslaw Brother, Ferlin Husky, Dan Seals, T.G. Sheppard, B.J. Thomas, Ricky Van Shelton, Porter Wagoner, and Gene Watson."

You can say it's sort of like when a group of old time Gospel singers get together, and have revival singing sessions. Every person sitting in that group--young and old, were stars in their own right. 🤗 Glen showcased his skills and I was blown away. 😲🤗 If you get a chance, listen to the words of that beautiful song. I'll tell you when it was over, I felt like I had taken a journey back to that place.

"Grand Ole Opry." It's the most Historic place in "Country Western" music. If you look closely, you'll see a "whos who" of the country music world. this was a while back, and most of them are gone now. Many legends in that group. Just having a little jam session with friends. Nothing formal. This sort of thing is common in country music. This is what they do in real life after a big Sunday dinner. Go out to the porch, and bring your guitar, fiddle, Harmonica, and your singing voice, and we'll play a few tunes, to help our food digest. This is what average folk do in the south, not just the stars. Your raised this way. Sing some Gospel songs to Jesus and relax. I think it's wonderful and wholesome. We need more time together like that.

Among those with him were Chet Atkins, Willie Nelson Bobby Bare, Chrystal Gale, Roy Clark and so many more. These were giants of the country recording industry from the 1950's through the 1980's and longer on a program called Country Reunion. All these stars just get together and chill out on camera, sharing stories of days gone by and singing their music. THanks for reacting. Glenn Campbell was beyond superstardom. A superb guitar player, he influenced guitarists as varied as Alice Cooper, Keith Richards and Santana.

Glen was one of the biggest "country crossover" artists of all time. He had his own TV show in the late 60s/early 70s. He passed a few years ago, sadly after suffering thru several years of dementia. There's a great documentary from a couple years back about that, called "I'll Be Me" -- it's heartbreaking, especially if you have loved ones who have had Alzheimer's.

Great song, written by John Hartford. It was a 3 time Grammy winning song and listed in BMI's top 100 greatest songs of the century. There's a few videos of John and Glen performing this together as well as John singing it by himself while playing his banjo or a fiddle. He used to wear a black derby hat when he played. He said he wrote this song when he was a bluegrass banjo picker living in Southeast Missouri.

This song was written by John Hartford, a favorite artist of mine, in just under 30 minutes after watching the film Doctor Zhivago. When they did a 6 hour retrospective on Hartford after he passed 2001, they titled it Stashed Behind Your Couch a lyric taken from his song. It was covered not only by Glen but a bunch of other artists, including Elvis I'm told, which gave him such a comfortable living that he never had really work again.
